I went to a Perth Glory game about twenty years ago and was surprised at the quality, around League 2, National League standard, although much of that quality came from Eastern European imports.

One full back was superb, so good on the ball, I alerted the club when I got back. No reply.

Would you say that the A League is slowly improving? Has the number of imports reduced?

I think it has improved defensively with more organised coaching, but the overall quality is not higher than lower league 1. There are some decent players that play in that league.

I think they still have a lot of imports but could be wrong.

Poll: What's your prediction for this season?

Jaylan Pearman on 06:07 - Jun 22 with 2855 viewsHooparoo

I’ve watched the A-League since it’s inception and would agree it’s probably League 1 standard generally. That said, some of the more technical players are well suited to the championship. Some of the best football I’ve ever seen was watching Brisbane Roar during the Ange Postecoglou era so our league sometimes gets it right. In Australia we have 4 football codes so the best athletes get torn in different directions and our national team suffers from this as the pipeline is not as full as it is in most other countries which holds us back.

I’ve seen Pearlman play and he is a good one for the future who should do well for us.

Poll: Where will we finish up next season?

Is he playing championship manager and using players he's found on it

Has any one from the club actually seen this boy in the flesh or is he just a bunch of statistics on a lap top and a few you tube clips?

Sorry, sounds more like a lottery ticket to me. But that I suppose, is the only chance this club has of winning big. Fingers crossed then.

However, if we can bring in a couple of proven, known quantities from clubs lower down the pyramid from this country, then we might be getting somewhere.

I also wonder why we have decided to let Saito go? One of the few bright sparks from last season.

Ah yes, Koki Saito. 3 goals and 3 assists in 39 appearances, how we'll miss your contribution.

Alex Wilkie, Cian Dillon and Alfie Tuck look like being good examples of recruitment from UK clubs lower in the pyramid.

Saito came in with a permanent contract in view so you'd expect the club to make an announcement one way or another in the next week or so.

Thought I’d seen him on a released list somewhere. Hope I’m wrong.

Cian Dillon was recruited from outside the UK. A place called Ireland. The Devil’s in the detail dmm.

Well it’s not Conan Doyle who funnily enough I’m reading at this very moment. The Arthur in question you know well. In fact my good man I can’t believe you’re asking. You’re certainly no Sherlock Holmes 😆

Ever more clear to me that we're planning for the medium/long term, in terms of what talent is affordable and creating future value.

Of course how we survive in the Championship in the meantime is another matter!

Surviving in the Championship is overrated. Its only value lies in the fact that the Championship is where you get promoted to the Prem from. If your plan is Prem after five years but you're not a realistic contender for the automatic spots this year, you're literally better off spending years 2-4 in League One than spending them in the Championship.

“Contribution” is defined by more than goals and assists. Unless you’re a stats based pleb with no appreciation for things like work ethic, attitude and availability to play, along with future potential.

He did OK last season and always played with a smile, which many found endearing. However, we have Smyth, Chair, Dembele and Sutton, all of whom are tiny and play as wingers. Given our budget and the obvious imbalance in the squad, do we really need him to return?

He's free and cheap wages with potential sell on and would allow Sutton to go on loan. Also better than Smythe or Dembele.

If you can work out that way, I'd agree. Definitely more effective than Smyth. Sutton going on loan would be good for his development. That still leaves a midfield containing Field, Varane, possibly Colback, Dixon-Bonner, Richards, Morgan, Chair, Madsen, Dembele, poss Andersen, Bemmie, Pearman. 12 players for 5 slots, without adding anybody else, e.g. Tuck from the DS.

Even if you take Colback, Andersen, EDB and Richards out, it still leaves 8. Note - AFAIK, the latter 2 are under contract.

Exactly.

Sounds promising. Right type of signing for the Dev squad. I wouldn’t expect him to breakthrough at all this season, but that is fine. Having Bennie here clearly helped attract him.

They need to spend the next 12 months building up his upper body strength…similar issue for Tuck. Otherwise he’ll be eaten alive in the Champ.

"They need to spend the next 12 months building up his upper body strength…similar issue for Tuck. Otherwise he’ll be eaten alive in the Champ."

Just on this point, I used to play 8 a side football in Slough and the standard was pretty high; lots of the players were pacy, could reliably do the flicks and tricks, could tackle well etc. It was also fiercely competitive. I was one of the worst players, by the way .

Where am I going with this? Well, after one session, a load of players turned up for an 11 a side match. I stood on the touchline and asked one of the coaches watching the game who was playing. I was told it was Slough Town against Slough Town old boys. Don't ask me why but Josh Parker, once of this parish, was playing.

I mention all this because the difference in intensity was startling, and this was just non-league level. Without being dirty, players were charging into tackles, slamming into each other. It was a real eye opener, so I think the upper body strength point is an important one.

"Things had started becoming increasingly desperate at Loftus Road but QPR have been handed a massive lifeline and the place has absolutely erupted. it's carnage. It's bedlam. It's 1-1."

I hear that but...... I'm against "forcing" young un's to bulk up as has been noted on here.

Strength conditioning is fine but rapidly adding muscle too soon is a bad thing.

I've seen very little of Alfie Tuck but what I have seen tells me he's got what it takes to be a player and I'm hoping to see more of him in an R's shirt as his career develops.

Cherish and enjoy life.... this ain't no dress rehearsal

Why mention defensive midfielders when the subject is wingers? Chair, Dembele ,Smythe and occasionally Bennie are the only one's who can play in thjs position.

I mean, this looks like a great signing that Nourry (I assume) should get praise for but why the insulate yourself from the majority of fans with this kind ocf chat.

Welcome JMan anyway!

sorry how does a player signed purely on number and possible future numbers look like a great signing ? hes come from a league which is roughly league 1 standard he might step up he might never be seen again in a year or so time.

didnt know the board had totally woke sorry ! as said in previous reply have a close friend whos 9 year old son is severely disabled , speech learning etc showed him ur reply and he laughed and too zero offence at such a comment .

Probably not, but he did contribute more than all of the aforementioned, all of whom were already here when we signed him in the first place.
