Starmer's welfare cuts on 09:01 - Jun 27 by Whiterockin | Agreed. It's all well and good saying parliament needs working class members with their feet in the ground and in touch with the real world. But normally these have no experience of being in a position where massive amounts of money are involved and major decisions need to be made. There has to be a balance and and in the case of last two Governments this has not been the case. |
I've used this example before, but one of my oldest friends is an auditor by profession. Currently the regional director for a largish firm, responsible for examining the finances of companies worth Billions. He's the kind of guy who works 60+ hour weeks as standard. Ideal MP material or so you'd think, but he'd have to take a minimum 50% pay cut to become one. And there are plenty like him in the UK. The kind of person we need running the country won't go near the job because the money is so poor in comparison to what they can earn elsewhere with a lot less scrutiny. [Post edited 27 Jun 9:15]

Starmer's welfare cuts on 08:09 - Jun 27 by Dr_Winston | It's Labour. Every Labour Govt in modern history has left the country skint because they don't (or more likely choose not to) understand that everything has to be paid for by somebody. You've nailed it with the "hoped for" tax increases. Every plan they had for increasing tax revenue has blown back in their faces because they don't understand basic economic reality. They've come into power and spent like a drunken sailor on shore leave expecting mobile wealth to pick up the tab and are now surprised that the mobile wealth is f*cking off elsewhere. |
That's rubbish, Labour are often better than the Conservatives on the economy, no worse anyway, here is a fact check thingy :- https://www.channel4.com/news/factcheck/factcheck-qa-which-party-has-a-better-tr

Starmer's welfare cuts on 07:43 - Jun 27 by AnotherJohn | The Labour rebels seem to think the UK has money for everything - the mushrooming disability support bill, the NHS, welfare benefits in general, public-sector pay, ODA, migrant support - although perhaps not defence. They seem unaware that much of current spending is going straight on to the national debt, or how difficult debt servicing becomes when borrowing is over 100% of GDP. Their solution is increase taxes on the rich and big companies, when rates are already high. As we know, many of the rich are now highly mobile, and as we've seen with the non-doms policy and VAT on private education, the hoped for increases in tax revenue are not really materialising. We're going to reach a tipping point soon when things get really uncomfortable. |
It's not just Labour rebels. Everyone seems to think that. We need to pay more and government spend less or expect less in return.

It's a tough one, even people working in education, local council administration ect can earn double a MPs salary. To get suitable candidates you need to pay a competitive salary but 90% of MPs are not worth more than they get. There is a massive conflict of interest between serving your constituents and doing the best for your country. Possibly there should be an extra tier of government or is that the civil service, where many earn more than MPs anyway.

Some people in education, police, local Government etc get paid too much and that skews everything, people working in the private sector effectively pay for people working in the public sector because the public sector don't produce anything, they don't create wealth.

Well - for example - the teachers produce the workers of the future, and thats essential. I dont play the Tory divide and conquer game. Pay all working people well and chase down the real money, starting with inheritance tax from Prince Charles. Levels to this game ….

Well as a comparison Swansea Council has a budget of £900 million a year, Eddie Stobart have a turnover of about £900 million a year. The Cheif Exec of Swansea Council earns about £170 k a year the Cheif Exec of Eddie Stobart pockets about £6 million.

Absolutely but what is happening here is people in work are complaining about people not in work, give the less well off less coin so they can have more coin is their mantra. 99% of people that do a job do a worthwhile job including teachers but I've never come across a good teacher or policeman (read about a good one this morning) or council leader, I know they exist but never seen one myself.

Swansea council have a guaranteed income stream, Stobart doesn't, you could say that the public sector doesn't create wealth it just spends the wealth the private sector makes for it.

Probably minimum wage according to the looser who is jealous of anyone who puts in effort and is reasonably successful. [Post edited 27 Jun 12:21]

You were comparing somebody in Swansea Council wage with somebody working for a private firm wage and clearly wondering why the difference, I gave you a possible reason for the difference.
