Starmer's welfare cuts 18:09 - Jun 24 with 4088 viewsSullutaCreturned

I agree with what he's trying to do, mostly anyway but it looks like rebellion in the Labour ranks,

I think despite all the protestations about "how hard" it is to claim sickness benefits, the figures would suggest otherwise. Assessments are rarely carried out face to face these days, and claims of poor mental health just seem to be accepted at face value.

It's a fight that the Government really needs to win, but Starmer, as per usual, is backing down.

Well something has been said that I know to be true, people can get help with their claim and (having feceived such help myself once) are told we have to exaggerate (well lie) to get what we are entitled to.

People who knw how to play the system often get benefits they don't deserve but then people who are deserving get turned down.

The system is rubbish.

I've heard about these although I don't know any personally. I believe they charge a fee of the first month's payment, if you don't get it there is no charge. It may be worth asking around if you are unsure how to claim, apparently there are key replies to put for the questions, all perfectly legal and above board but it enhances your chances.

A couple of points, they are going after the wrong targets, they should be going after rich people and large companies.
Secondly what about the people that are eligible to claim benefits but don't because they don't know they are entitled to them, the Government doesn't tell them they are eligible, that was the story a few years ago and the Government were saving not far off a couple of billion if I recall, not going to spend my night checking stuff like that but that was the story now its gone from the Government not telling people they are eligible for benefits to some people are claiming benefits that should not be, right wing media and right wing parties like NuLabour will do what right wing parties do I suppose.

I've never come across anyone charging a fee to complete PIP forms in my time. Not saying that they don't exist, but if they do they're rare. Around here at least. There are plenty of organisations out there who will help people for free.

In any case, the system seems largely designed to defeat the honest. Someone might have serious health issues, but on a good day they might be able to walk 200 yards. They put that on the form, and their application is denied. Someone willing to bend the truth a bit says that they can't do it at all, and their application is approved. Rarely after an actual physical examination.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

Someone aged 25+ receiving UC with the LCWRA element will be getting around £840 a month. If they get both higher elements of PIP that equates to an approximate extra £828 a month. If they're renting a single bed flat in Swansea that's around £530 a month.

That's £2198 a month in total. I'd imagine that there are many people working full time in the Swansea area who don't take that much home per month.

Working on the figures you’ve given, someone working in Swansea would have to earn £31,000 per year to take home £2153 per month, if we are factoring pension contribution deductions they’d have to earn even more.
The “working person” would also have to pay rent or a mortgage to have a roof over their head which in effect would be a further deduction. For the “working person” to be in the “same position” as the person on benefits - that is after accommodation “is paid for” they’d need to earn a even more - north of £37,000. If the person on benefits is exempt from council tax, then the “working person” would need to be on over £40k per year to be in a similar financial position. The average salary in Wales is £38k and the medium salary is £34k.

I appreciate that not all of those on benefits will be on £2.1k per month, but there are lots of people on lower amounts who are still getting good coin. How are we supposed to make work pay when people can get a lot of money got not contributing much. I’ve no issue with supporting the genuine cases - those who have serious issues and are unable to work, but there are many out there who aren’t genuine. There needs to be a grown up discussion about resolving these issues.

Plenty of places offer help with PIP. I’m aware Citizens Advice and some foodbanks help as do advocates, like you I’ve never heard of anyone doing it for a fee.

Starmer climbing down again it seems on his big promises , scared of losing his status .

The small boat pledge was a nonstarter from the off and a voter winner to many .
It was a failure even before the manifesto was made and voters bought it .

Thought I would give him a second chance on cracking down on cheating the system I see on a daily basis .

Nope , file under a Politician who does not live in the real world .

If he doesn’t have the numbers, Starmer has to compromise.

Points made earlier in the post about going after tax evasion are very valid, but there’s no reason it has to be binary welfare cheats v tax avoidance, we should be going after both. I’d contemplate offering rewards where people have reported fraudsters who’ve for successfully prosecuted for cheating the system.

Yes, forgot Council Tax. That's an easy £1200 a year minimum. There are also social tariffs for energy, free dental, optical and other support.

Even someone not claiming any sickness benefits can get over £1000 a month in combined income from the State. £400 in UC, £500 in Housing Allowance, free council tax, free other stuff. If they do a little bit of work on the side or petty crime, soon the disposable income is as good as someone earning not far off £30k but having to pay for everything.

That's also one of the migrant attractions. Free accommodation, food, heating, broadband etc. A small stipend in their hands and as much Deliveroo money as they can make on the side. Can easily have as much spare cash as someone working a decent full time job.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

The Labour rebels seem to think the UK has money for everything - the mushrooming disability support bill, the NHS, welfare benefits in general, public-sector pay, ODA, migrant support - although perhaps not defence. They seem unaware that much of current spending is going straight on to the national debt, or how difficult debt servicing becomes when borrowing is over 100% of GDP. Their solution is increase taxes on the rich and big companies, when rates are already high. As we know, many of the rich are now highly mobile, and as we've seen with the non-doms policy and VAT on private education, the hoped for increases in tax revenue are not really materialising. We're going to reach a tipping point soon when things get really uncomfortable.

It's Labour. Every Labour Govt in modern history has left the country skint because they don't (or more likely choose not to) understand that everything has to be paid for by somebody.

You've nailed it with the "hoped for" tax increases. Every plan they had for increasing tax revenue has blown back in their faces because they don't understand basic economic reality. They've come into power and spent like a drunken sailor on shore leave expecting mobile wealth to pick up the tab and are now surprised that the mobile wealth is f*cking off elsewhere.

A massive reform of Parliament is required.

Halve the numbers but double the salary. A cost negative way of making the job more attractive to the kind of person who is capable enough to earn way more in the private sector than an MP currently does. Minimum age of 30.

I would also require at least five years of actual work experience in the private sector, with perhaps some exempted public occupations such as teaching, The NHS or Armed Forces counting towards that. No more people jumping straight from Uni to a nice Political adviser or Trade Union job before eventually finding a safe seat.

The Labour rebels are part of the elected Labour Government. So are you saying that the current Labour Government don't know how to run the country properly. Because without the "rebels" Labour would not have had a working majority. It just seems a massive mess and have a situation where the tail is wagging the dog. Starmer has lost control already, should he go because he is reversing his policies under pressure from other MPs.

Agreed. It's all well and good saying parliament needs working class members with their feet in the ground and in touch with the real world. But normally these have no experience of being in a position where massive amounts of money are involved and major decisions need to be made. There has to be a balance and and in the case of last two Governments this has not been the case.
