Elected President of Argentina in late 2023 despite looking like a 1970's Rugby Club throwback. His election was treated with horror by many conventional economic thinkers in North America and Europe, with predictions of disaster for Argentina and its people.

In Eighteen months poverty has declined from 52.9% to 38.1%. Inflation has fallen to a five year low, from 25% a month to 1.5% per month. Economic Growth is currently running at 5.5% annually.

Argentina could be an Economic superpower. The second biggest country on its Continent. Rich in resources, agriculturally significant, and reasonably well developed. Have they finally got a leader capable of taking them to the top table?

He is the guy that has based his economic model on Ireland, he is a massive fan of what Ireland has done.

I suppose it depends on what has had to give so that the economy performs well and how some sectors of society may have been severely disadvantaged. We probably won’t get to hear about that.

I can see them offering favourable tax rates to attract corporations to base themselves there, but I can't see the EU being happy with them spending 30 years scrounging for handouts from richer neighbours.

"While Milei has won plaudits for stabilizing the state's finances, his tough austerity drive weighed on economic activity in the first months of 2024. Cuts to state spending continue to hit public workers hard, with salaries falling behind inflation"

He's turned things around, he was written off by the usual suspects as being a far right idiot, he's actually a libertarian who has also slimmed down the public sector and eased regulation in Argentina.
Argentina has been beset by poor governance, it has the attributes to be a successful economy.

Well that one has been answered and it is a resounding NO!

Has it?

Given that Argentina has stumbled from one economic catastrophe to another for generations this one seems fairly tame by comparison, and even the BBC suggest that the market upset is more over investor uncertainty about whether or not Milei will continue in power rather than his reforms.

One to keep an eye on.

A lot of economists call it the world’s biggest tax haven. It’s strange that a largely agrarian society with a small rural population had such a massive explosion of GDP virtually overnight.
