How optimistic are you now? 19:33 - Jun 28 with 5766 viewsSpen

I know it’s very early days in this transfer window and I was going to post this a few days back, but, I think I’m feeling more confident and optimistic now than this time last year.

Last summer the narrative was what could Marti and this team do with a full preseason etc, and the general feeling around the place was positive.

Things seem to be making sense now and with the new management team in place, decent, forward thinking signings, retained players etc, there does seem something brewing here.

I guess it’s the well worn phrase ‘it’s the hope that kills you’ kicking in, especially after 2 San Miguel, but for the first time in a long time I’m really looking forward to this season.

Well on the one hand, things are looking good. L1's top scorer coming back, new manager appears to have some pedigree, the signings look good on paper.

But it's just that summer period though; around this time last year most of us had similar positive thoughts but for different reasons.

I still don't see us addressing the issue we've had for years and years - up front. Are we really going to go, yet again, into a new season on a wing and a prayer in this department? Just hoping that Kelman is going to be the solution? Big ask.

Frey, Lloyd, Kelman, Celar and Kolli - is that really going to be good enough? Hope so, but....

Been down this road before only to be pooped on.

Having said that It's a lovely evening and I've just finished watering the garden and come In to put the kettle on.

I like the look of our signings (said that before too) I'm not missing the football at all, especially the Saturday evenings after we've lost.

We'll see I guess, It means nothing to me when we sign a player that every other club In the universe were allegedly trying to sign them.

But I'm pretty optimistic If I'm honest.

My Father had a profound influence on me, he was a lunatic.

When I say optimistic, I mean I don’t think we’ll be in a relegation battle this season. Not thinking promotion or anything like that. Just winning a decent amount of games at home and not constantly thinking we’re f*cked.

Think we have to see how JS sets up the team to have any idea of how we'll do tbh.

I think Kolli and Lloyd will be gone - sold or loaned - and I think we need a target man in.

I think Field and Varane are not the two we need in a 4 man midfield. Maybe Field-Morgan-Varane works as a three, but we don't have replacements for Varane or Field, assuming Colback goes.

I don't know whether we have LB covered witb Larkeche plus others.

If I was pushed for just one more in, it'd be the target man. And being really cheeky, it'd be an upgrade on Frey, who I really really like but who probably isn't going to be fit for more than half our games.

Last summer was positive but based mostly on a strong finish to the prior season. Players who had no track record in England were getting us excited because we wanted to be excited about the team under Marti. This year we all want the manager to succeed, but given the negative sentiment around the club at the end of the season I do not think the excitement around these transfers is just generic transfer hype. Mbengue, Poku, and the unexpected renewal of Dunne which feels like a new signing, alongside Kelman returning from loan feels like some real quality additions to the squad compared to expectations. The players all have extensive EFL experience, meaning we shouldn't suffer as extensive an adjustment period as we did last year. Furthermore, the signings from last summer have had a season to adjust. Varane looks like a quality member of the squad and a head and shoulders above where he was when he signed (as supported by the offers that have come in for him), Madsen looks like a professional football rather than a competition winner (even if he's not our best midfield option and Morrison became a valued squad member by the end of the season. Kieran Morgan was an unexpected first team regular having initially been signed for the development squad. Our development squad won a competition. Vale is an unknown quantity that has almost been forgotten because of his extended injury.

We have a new manager who wants to work with Nourry and the new structured club-first head coach setup with club coaches rather than a manager's team.

Financially the club does not appear to be on a cliff edge as it has been before.

Now, there are inevitably many issues with the team and the club. Do we have the pace and power in the side to really compete yet? Have we really changed enough to improve our dire injury record? Does Christian Nourry speak like a LinkedIn chatbot with a pretentious and opaque communication style?

But, if we compare now to last summer, ignoring the Marti hypetrain after that incredible finish to 23/24 and the relief and excitement after surviving (which I was wholeheartedly a part of), are we in a better position? I think we have a stronger squad, a more cohesive coaching and amanagement team that is aligned with the board, and incoming transfers with EFL experience. As a result, we should be optimistic. QPR are doing what we have wanted for a long time in building a squad and a system that is moving towards being financially sustainable, and not built around peaks and troughs of spaffing money up the wall on one season pushes like Austin and Johansen. Maybe it doesn't work. But if Stephan doesn't work and gets sacked in November after another poor start to the season, we have a squad. and a philosophy in appointments that makes me believe we won't try and appointment Sam Allardyce and get relegated, but instead will recover and survive. And if it does go well, maybe we can finally start looking up the table and building over a number of seasons. Maybe I'm overly optimistic, but I genuinely think that we are moving in the right direction as a club.

It's the hope that kills you! But after the recent signings I'd settle for being severely maimed by the hope.

Never knowingly right.
Poll: How long before new signings become quivering wrecks of the players they were?

More hopeful than a month ago and actually looking forward to seeing what the new faces can do, if Varane and Morgan continue to develop and if Kelman can add the goals we badly need.

I think the biggest variable is how the new head coach (and other coaches) work with the CEO and DoF.

New players appear to be better decisions (on paper) but if we get the same friction as last year, it’s not going to matter much.

Bob Hoping King Jules can manage/navigate the politics internally and blend what we have with what we have acquired into a squad and team capable of what we expect.

Those possessed by devils, try and keep them under control a bit, can't you ?

I don't want to be looking at the bottom three every February--March--April of every bleeding year thinking bloody hell those bastards can still catch us.

It sounds awfully like a lack of ambition but give me a season of mid table comfortable armchair safety and I'll be happy.

The Premiership Is where the money Is but It's not for me, Its television junk food.

Ted, you could have been in the play off places and still looking at the relegation spots for most of last season. Maybe a small exaggeration. but not much.

As ever. the championship is 24 shades of average, it doesn't take much to move from below average to above.

Send Lloyd out loan , Kolli too (IMO) or sell depending on Celar fitness , bring in a big centre forward back up for Frey and I think we are pretty much there .
Gutted about Marti, but excited to see how it pans out .

I didn't think we'd be signing loads of players and I've not changed my mind. Maybe a couple more, say a LB and a CM, but apart from that we look good.
Two things could change that. Sale of Eze and sale of Kelman.

Overall its looking good so far, and still early in the window.

Poll: How is Nourry cooking so far ? 🤣

Strikers, lb and CM positions need surgery.

One a kid, one not a left back, one so far shown to be a bench player at best.
We went through this last year, “oh we’ll probably be fine with that”…

This.

But I am more optimistic than at the end of the season, much more so. We have made two really solid looking signings.

I’d still like an experienced EFL central midfielder to replace Colback, a starting left back, and a young back up target man from L1/L2.

Get that in, and I’ll be very optimistic.

It'll all be crap, everyone'll be injured all the time, we'll play lovely tippy tappy football and lose to teams that run in a straight line towards our goal, Stephan'll be gone in November and replaced with Grant McCann, we'll get to Christmas with Frey being the only striker to have scored any goals at all, our relegation will be confirmed with four matches to play, we'll then win all four of those matches to finish 22nd one point behind Oxford.
