How optimistic are you now? 19:33 - Jun 28 with 18102 viewsSpen

I know it’s very early days in this transfer window and I was going to post this a few days back, but, I think I’m feeling more confident and optimistic now than this time last year.

Last summer the narrative was what could Marti and this team do with a full preseason etc, and the general feeling around the place was positive.

Things seem to be making sense now and with the new management team in place, decent, forward thinking signings, retained players etc, there does seem something brewing here.

I guess it’s the well worn phrase ‘it’s the hope that kills you’ kicking in, especially after 2 San Miguel, but for the first time in a long time I’m really looking forward to this season.

Only 500 new season tickets being made available despite big swathes of availability in usual areas. After that...a waiting list! Scarcity as a marketing ploy then.

Why are you assuming it's down to a ploy? You just have to read LFW for more than five minutes to know that we have a widely dispersed fan base who can't make all home games. They're all great fans but can't get season tickets. You also need some availability for potential future fans.

If you haven't got your season ticket by July you're surely leaving it quite late?

'The problem isn't a manager, it's a striker'. We asked you what you thought of QPR's switch from Marti Cifuentes to Julien Stephan in the manager's seat. Here's what you had to say... https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/articles/cdr33me2lxxo

Anyone on here featured in the article above?

LFW Glossary points for Gavin's suggestion, "Maybe Charlie Austin as a club legend could come back in some role as a strikers' mentor/coach to develop forward play skill"...

On growing the fan base, when safe standing first started, it was often quite empty, but it's been really noticeable not just how much it's filled up, but the age profile of who has come in.

It's mad how often I'm in a pub and meet a young lad who has started following us in the last couple of years cos of the experience. Though, at the risk of sounding like an inverse snob, they are often quite posh

I think they should be looking at expanding it personally.
The away ends we go in that have it - Cardiff, Norwich - are way better than they used to be without it.

Brought my wife along to the Leeds game when our group had a spare. Couple of weeks later a Spurs mate gave us his tickets for their Palace game cos he'd been at the semi final and we'd recently moved in round the corner. At half time Mrs Robith turned to me and said "this is shit compared to QPR". It's been a great success

Don’t mention Swansea at home….better left unsaid.

I felt optimistic at this time last season…6 weeks into the season that feeling faded. Will wait to see how we actually perform in the opening few months . First 10 games will form an opinion then. A lot of new players let’s see how they pan out.

Feel like it could creep round to the whole of R-Block with minimal disruption. A majority of the fans there wouldn't mind standing/perching. You'd need to sort out the queue at the bar though.

Fulham tickets are so expensive that we've even managed to price out the posh kids of West London. If we're not careful, we could lose out on the next generation of local fund managers, corporate lawyers, and property developers. Sad times.

I am always optimistic in July. It's not that hard to sneak into 6th, you can drop nigh on half the available 134pts and still be in the mix. Literally three spurts of 6 or 7 games of good form slays the relegation battle too. I feel just an averagely competent outfit should be easily capable of being in the top third. I have no idea what the new manager will do though - if he over-complicates things it could well be the same old same old for the umpteenth season on the trot. I am hopeful he will get us up and at 'em and we will have our best season for a decade.

Older readers will remember when John Gregory was here (as player not manager) and had a side gig coaching at Eton - the programme used to love printing pics of him perched on the shoulders of kids dressed like this. Weird.

Earlier this year, I was clearing out old programs to give to Stowmarket and came across the very program you refer to. Yup, there JG was, as you say, hoisted aloft.

It struck me that the young Etonians looked quite at ease and familiar with an older boy on top of them, too.

Aside of Cook, I can’t think of a single first teamer who’s experienced an EFL promotion.

Perhaps there’s someone I’ve forgotten but this paucity of players who have done it will cost us, whatever side we think we’re putting together.

It’s those games where you’re backs against the wall, and there’s a lot of those a season.

Overall, I like what we’re trying to do. But a new managers coming in to a squad that in many cases we’ve never found a formation that works, who to play where is largely up in the air. Quite how you turn that into a successful side without the required experience will need something of a minor miracle.

Derby are looking like the anti-thesis of our approach. Think they’re probably going too far the other way but it’ll be interesting to gauge how our seasons pan out.

I'm old enough to remember when experience on the playing fields at Eton got you an Empire - I'd take a top half finish nowadays.

Imo, we have to sign a box to box midfielder and a proven goalscorer if we want to reach a play-off position. As for now we are a mid table team, I think. Not saying the latter is bad though.

They're clearly not au fait with the nebulous "project" which will see us outperform the majority of the competition from August onwards.

Yeh a lot of what they've done so far this summer suggests welcome lessons learned from last year - we've tried to put some pace in the team, we've tried to put some athleticism in the team, we've targeted players with a lot of EFL and three-game week experience, Ben Williams is back in the country etc.

For that theme to continue you'd expect to see them add at left back; put some aggressive, experienced ball progression into the middle of the midfield; and add better striker(s).

If we once again go into this year thinking Frey and Celar covered by Kolli and Lloyd will be fine I suspect that will sting us all the same ways it did for the last 12 months. (This assuming the stories about Kelman not sticking around are sadly true, which I hope they're not).
