Battle of Orgreave national inquiry confirmed ... 10:17 - Jul 21 with 1636 viewstheloneranger

"A national inquiry will be held into one of the most violent days of the year-long miners' strike in the 1980s, the government has announced.

The inquiry would look into the clash that involved police and miners outside the Orgreave coking plant in Rotherham on 18 June 1984.

The incident, which became known as the Battle of Orgreave, involved miners from across Britain converging on the plant to try to disrupt deliveries, but they were met with force by thousands of police officers."

The country is run by the legal profession for the benefit of the legal profession. These things produce massive documents that hardly anyone reads.

If there is a tight budget and a time limit fair enough but it rarely happens.

We know the police were a bit rough with the miners but all the men involved are now retired or dead.

At that time, this country was in a fractious state
Working miners intimidated into not going into work
Their wives and kids hounded by miners from neighbouring counties and ostracised by striking miners on their local community

Hatred has been passed down as is obvious

41 yrs later , we get this

.... "In 2016, the then Home Secretary Amber Rudd rejected calls for an inquiry into events at Orgreave, saying it would not be in the public interest." ...

Many witnesses from Orgreave have said the Conservatives didn't want the inquiry - because of the involvement of military personnel, illegally masquerading as police officers.

You will note the different tone on JA
This strike ripped communities apart
It's never fully healed

Now we see this cynical ploy to ensure Labour voters don't vote reform on Sheffield
Same thinking in lowering voting age

This is another pay day for lawyers , like Starmer

I do see it as political, Blair and Brown had plenty of time to do something with this, it may backfire in turning Tory voters towards Reform.

The 84 strike in the South Wales valleys was the most solid anywhere in the UK, they were clearly made of stern stuff.

The inquiry was a Labour Party manifesto commitment.

There are claims that the military were deployed to Orgreave dressed as police officers, whether that is fact or urban myth I don’t know but the tales have continued over the years.

“The inquiry, expected to launch in the autumn, will investigate the events surrounding clashes at the Orgreave Coking Plant in 1984, causing 120 injuries. In total, 95 picketers were arrested and initially charged with riot and violent disorder, but all charges were later dropped after evidence was discredited.”

A total of 95 people were arrested and Charged with riot and violent disorder - these are very serious offences. All the charges were subsequently dropped after the evidence was discredited. What’s all that about? Are they saying the 95 people were “fitted up?” Were SYP incompetent or something else not right?

My take on things is that there are questions to be answered and concerns in need of investigating, but these should have been actioned years ago. A limited enquiry is appropriate, but not one that goes on for years and years and delivers the sum total of nothing.

The 1980’s were nt particularly great years for South Yorkshire Police as we saw with Hillsborough. A concise limited enquiry is, in my opinion a reasonable course of action, I do not want to see an enormous public enquiry that becomes a gravy train for solicitors etc take place.

"Joe Diviney, a historian at the University of Sheffield who is researching a PhD on the Orgreave events, pointed out that this appeared clearly to be the PC Martin incident. Martin was identified, including in police documents, as the officer who struck Broomhead, and a report was sent to the DPP who decided, on the same day Martin was interviewed, not to bring charges."

"During an interview under caution, Martin denied wrongdoing, and said of the Orgreave policing: “It’s not a case of me going off half cock. The senior officers, supers and chief supers were there and getting stuck in too – they were encouraging the lads and I think their attitude to the situation affected what we all did.”

What has Scargill's nationality got to do with it? Although it's typical of you, it was a National strike called by the NUM and voted for by mine workers throughout the UK

Unfortunately the miners were never given a vote on holding a strike. The NUM lead by the idiot Scargill called the miners out. It was a National UK strike and of course the Welsh miners supported it not sure why you claim Welsh miners had nothing to do with Scargill they supported him.
