Saints lead 1-0 at half time, Matteus Fernandes got in 30 minutes, looks like this is a standard 90 minute game.

McCarthy and Smallbone on for the 2nd half should help Castellon.

And there you go: 1-1. Why can't managers see how much McCarthy and Smallbone help the opposition? Releasing them both would be a huge boost to our chances this season. I'd be very happy to see them lining up against us every week, but no other club would be stupid enough to play them.

20 minutes Goal for Castellon. It looks like a vicious strike from the edge of the area. Former Goztepe winger Mamah gets in space behind Aribo who couldn’t quite clear and the power beats McCarthy at the near post. May have taken a slight touch from Bree on the way through.

"beats McCarthy at the near post" How depressingly familiar those words have become to Saints' fans over the years. I bought a ticket for the Brighton game, but knowing now that there's a good chance both McCarthy and Smallbone will play some part in the game is really offputting as we know they are always worth a goal or two to the opposition. Its very unconvincing. Friendlies or not, it seems to be a real struggle against lower league sides with the same issues, ie missing chances, not clinical, conceding at the near post because we have the same poor goalkeepers. Castellon play in an inferior league to the championship and we arnt finding it easy. [Post edited 23 Jul 11:52]

Castellon Game Thread on 12:09 - Jul 23 with 1621 views | Southamptonfan | We need to get some attacking players in. The inability to score continues. So toothless again today and the team just seems to lack any quality where it matters, at both ends of the pitch and with the goalkeepers. Just stop trying to be clever, with young unknown players or has-beens and just buy a bit of proven quality! [Post edited 23 Jul 12:11]

We need to sign this Own Goal bloke. Could be the new creative midfielder.

Before I saw your post, Pat, I was about to post Own Goal could be our top goalscorer this season. Still should give Princewill a chance, with at least 20 minutes or so v Brighton, before bringing in more unproven youngsters from other clubs. Of course, we should get an experienced goalscorer like Ayoub El Kaabi, but that's not going to happen because Sport Republic only spend money on youngsters as they speculate on their resale value rather than what they might contribute to the team. Castellon Game Thread on 16:59 - Jul 23 with 1243 views | 1885_SFC | Get the money in for Aaron Ramsdale - and spend a sizeable chunk of it on the Stoke City keeper Viktor Johansson. Goalkeeper problem sorted. Stoke would sell if the offer is high enough.

QPR are a mess. Their manager has deserted them for Leicester and their best player from last season is back with us. Not looking good for them.

I unfortunately watched the whole game, and Smallbone imo was one of the better players Fully agree on McCarrthy it seemed to me he should have pushed it around the post. Generally terrible a team performance, had it not been for Bazuna we would have been behind at half time, and only other performance of note was Robinson. [Post edited 24 Jul 6:24]

There are 3 certainties in life. Death, taxes and McCarthy being beaten at his near post.

I agree with your comments, but are there any serious clubs out there chasing Ramsdale and willing to pay £20m+ ? It's gone very quiet on the Ramsdale transfer. [Post edited 24 Jul 7:18]

Castellon Game Thread on 09:29 - Jul 24 with 653 views | Flamingbankers | If we still have Ramsdale and Fernandes this season then we can seriously rebuild a decent team, possibly capable of competing in the Prem. If not, forget it - I'd rather not go up and slowly and steadily rebuild for the next season. Saints, though, are not generally in a position to compete in the Premier division, the managing and ambition are simply not there. Not that I've seen any serious evidence anyway. Buying kids with some potential and mediocre players at around £10 million just doesn't hack it. A decent player costs upwards of £40 million these days. Saints are now, I believe, firmly in that middling group of teams, between the Championship and the Premier. In other words, welcome to yo-yo land. [Post edited 24 Jul 9:31]

It’s been well documented that saints need to move a few on before they can seriously strengthen. That’s why everything is so slow. As usual the window will really kick off after the season has started which won’t please many and it’s not ideal but that’s the way it is .

As you say, we can worry about these things during the season as it doesn't look like they're going to be sorted out before it starts. Pat did, in fact, predict this would happen. I'm just hoping that we have some sort of half-decent team organised and ready for the Pompey game in September, unlikely as it seems right now. On September 14th, who will be there to score our goals? Own Goal or AN Other? Who will be in our goal to stop them? Ramsdale or Bazunu? Who will be there to win the midfield battle? Fernandes or Smallbone? [Post edited 24 Jul 14:11]
