5 Things About Espanyol 12:48 - Jul 28 with 1033 viewsSaintNick

Just got back from Barcelona, here is what I learned.

1. This was not a behind closed doors friendly, if you were an Espanyol fan you could get in, some Saints supporters did get in thanks to some of the Espanyol ultras who were happy to help.

2. Barcelona is a great city, but if I lived there I would support Espanyol,

3. Las Rambla is meant to be the edgy and dangerous and pick pocket central, it didn't feel like that to me.

4. Bournemouth airport charge £9 for a pint of Heineken & Morretti.

5. The Nou Camp is being reconstructed to allow them to fleece more tourists, they seem to be doing all right as it is judging by the number of official attractions outside you could part with your money for £24 to go on the tour for starters

5. Not surprised to hear that, I reckon a good part of the reason for what they are doing now is the legacy that the club has been left with thanks to paying Messi grossly over inflated wages for the majority of the time he was at Barcelona. It got so bad that the Spanish FA or PL stepped in and refused to sanction his registration for the following season unless they halved his wages. That was the point Messi trotted off to PSG with about 75% of Barcelona’s net profits from about the previous decade tucked away in his bank accounts! I think they might have just about recovered but the authorities were genuinely worried that if Messi remained at Barca on the new contract he’d just signed he would bankrupt the club!

Love Barcelona, good feel to it. I’ve been twice.

The Dancing fountains is a must visit as is nou camp . Their trophy room is impressive a bit like ours really .

I believe you can fly from Southampton to Barcelona from this October via Easy jet .

One time I went to Barcelona, I went to Montjuic (Olympic Stadium) when Espanyol were playing there. The club shop was basically a portacabin which also sold Barcelona shirts, which must have hurt their fans. I've been to watch Espanyol at their new stadium and that was a bit more pro Espanyol, with anti Barca and pro Spain flags.

I'll go back to BCN when Camp Nou opens to see a game, but I'm not as keen on the club as I used to be. I liked the independence that the club used to have with no sponsor and their stance on being almost anti-establiahment, but that has disappeared over the last 20 years or so as they try to keep up with Real Madrid (who are even worse). Bilbao is where it's at, and their stadium tour is decent as well. By the way Nick, Camp Nou tour is the same price as Saints, and it could be argued that their stadium has a little more history (it was the only place where locals could get away with speaking Catalan under Franco)

It is a great city though, and I've never had any issue on Las Rambla (though there was an incident where some prostitutes tried to rob us, and their pimps weren't happy with our response!). I think tourists may have other issues there at the moment though.

I'd agree with comment about La Ramblas having been there 3 or 4 times now although did hear of one Brit who had his watch nicked from his wrist while we were there. But it is a fantastic place to go with loads of decent "touristy" things to do and visit if you like arty and architectural type stuff. And Salvadore Dali of course
And the one time I went to the Camp Nou I was disappointed with the state of the place and even 15 years ago or so it needed knocking down and started again which now that it's happening is probably going to be quite an amazing place to go

I’ve spent a fairly large amount of my life in Barcelona as my dad lives not far from there. In fact the first football game I saw in the flesh was at the Canp Nou, and a certain Maradona was playing.

I actually don’t like the ramblas and Bari gotic these days, it’s a tourist trap and the food and drink are shocking by the standards of the city. The area I tend to stick to is Poble Nou which has far better food and places to go.

As for espanyol I don’t actually have any time for them due to them being a fascist club, though I’m also not a massive fan of Barcelona either as I find them a really arrogant club and their “mes de un clube” stuff is such boll*cks, maybe they were decades ago but they’re a tourist attraction now
