Signing for Wrexham, perhaps he is the link we have been missing for the last 3 or 4 years

Yes. It's often been said that he's the missing link.

He would be a great signing for Saints, but as I have said to my frustration and annoyance, our owners wouldn't allow us to sign a player at 32 years old, with no sell on value. Wrexham will do whatever is necessary to get promoted to the PL, by putting quality players on the pitch now, even if all their players will be too old in 2 years time. It's about instant success there and the present, rather than thinking how a 19 year old will make us money in 3 years time.

Poll: Who do we want as the new permanent Saints manager?

Just out of curiosity I checked out a Leicester forum about this as it surprised me that he couldn't get in their last Championship side ahead of Vestergaard.

The first half a dozen comments i could be bothered to read were basically saying he was useless, overpaid, worst player to ever play for them etc etc.

This adds to my theory that CBs in general are now a much maligned species as going by the opinions on here and Saints Web , we've basically not had a decent one since Van Dyke and Fonte.

One of them was regarded as the best CB in the world and the other won a Euros, 50 plus caps for a great Portugal team and the French league.

Is it possible we have unrealistic expectations of defenders in the modern game on modern pitches?

And by going down that route Wexham are more likely to get that promotion than us with the way this club is currently being run
Have we actually signed any players that are mainstream EPL or Championship experienced players

I think you may be right . We snapped him up very early too which was a good bit of business.

Some on here may remember me dribbling on about Kiefer Moore before.

Looks like Wrexham are signing him as well….

The owners won't let us sign players with no sell on value is fallacy, we signed Adam Lallana & Charlie Taylor last summer, yes they were free transfers but they were older experienced players.

Its about signing players who give value, and i don't have a problem with that, we have signed enough players who are young who we can't sell on for whatever reason.

Now we have a director of football controlling things again, we will look to sign those that can give us value and not those who are overpriced and whose value drops the moment they sign

He's leaving it a bit late, isn't he? The season's starting next week and our opponents, Wrexham, have been signing experienced players.

We seem to be no better prepared than last season, when we started wih an uncompetitive team featuring McCarthy, Stephens, Smallbone and Aribo.

Just saying….

We need to sell before we buy, even if we didn’t have such an overloaded squad .

We probably still need to raise £60 million somehow , perhaps the hold up for Ramsdale signing for Newcastle is we are pushing for a sale rather than a loan .

If we can get a decent fee for him and dibling then we may be near that, unfortunately i think we will have to sell Fernandes too.

Only once we know who’s going can we think about signing anyone else.

Come September I fear we will have a weaker squad than when we finished 4th under Martin.

"Come September I fear we will have a weaker squad than when we finished 4th under Martin."

Yes, we'll probably be facing Pompey with the weakest squad we've had for years. I don't know if anyone in charge of the club even cares.

The key phrase is "Come September" we all know that the main business wont get done till the final week of the transfer window, we have to reserve judgement till then

If we compare it to two years ago

Goalkeeper Bazunu exactly the same

Right back weaker with no KWP, centre of defence stronger as it stands, left back Manning , but with Welington so slightly stronger.

Central midfield stronger and out wide still potentially stronger especially if Dibling stays.

Up front much stronger

Having said that we need to get rid of a few more fringe players and make a key signing or two

I think we are stronger in midfield and up front than we we

"Up front much stronger"

Only when Jay Robinson is on the pitch. Without him we have little or no attacking threat as we saw in the first half today.

Shea Charles and Welington pushing forward and linking up with Robinson is going to be our best hope of scoring enough goals this season.
