Colchester to start with morale boosting win against Tranmere at the JCS 12:06 - Aug 2 with 1251 viewsdurham_exile

As we prepare to embark on our 10th season in League two there must be incredible optimism amongst the club, management, players and supporters that this season the Cowleys can guide us to promotion to league one.

Lat season amongst the 92 clubs Colchester’s increase in attendance was the 3rd highest in percentage terms.

We entertain Tranmere Rovers who struggled last season and now have Andy Crosby in charge at Prenton Park.

We will once again be able to watch over 20 U’s games on Sky Sports including today’s opener plus Carabao Cup and Vertu Trophy games.

Today is all about a bright and winning start for Colchester and I am predicting a 2-0 home victory with Goodwin (Godwin’s on fire) and Tovide on the scoresheet.

I think that the Cowleys have invested wisely during the summer. Ben Perry from Nottingham Forest, Will Goodwin from Oxford United and Jaden Williams from Spurs will be useful additions.

Taking the injuries into account first. Milton Oni will remain sidelined until November. Ellls Iandolo is out for 12 weeks with a knee injury. Jack Payne is back in training but there is no word on Dominic Gape who also has a soft tissue injury.

Now for more positive news. We have on paper the strongest looking strike force for many years. Will Goodwin, Jaden Williams, Samson Tovide, Kyreece Lisbie will present the opposition with many headaches over the season.

Supported by Owura Edwards, Oscar Thorn, John Kymani Gordon, Harry Edwards, Kane Vincent Young, Ben Perry, Teddy Bishop, Adrian Akande.

The defence looks to need some strengthening where we have Tom Flanagan, Rob Hunt, Kurai Musanhi, Jack Turner and Frankie Terry.

So, who will Danny Cowley select
For his squad today.

I’m going with

Macey

Hunt, Flanagan Tucker, Terry

Perry Bishop Read

Edwards Goodwin Tovide

Subs:
Smith, Thorn, Vincent-Young, Williams, Anderson, Akande, Lisbie

Expect a great turnout from the faithful today with 300 from the Wirral.

Get right behind the team and roar them onto victory.

Oh, and my outcome for the season. Promotion via the Play Offs.

Up the U’s

Great stuff as ever Durham. I’m currently at Hamilton Hall grabbing a beer or two before the train. A few Tranmere supporters, but the place is packed out with people in Oasis shirts. Never saw the attraction myself. I reckon there’ll be 500+ Tranmere supporters, could be on for a 5k+ crowd for today?

Edit: quite funny if you know the context, a bloke just walked past wearing a Blur t-shirt.

Amazing goal it was as well, right in front of me, spun on a sixpence, keeper had no chance. It was a terrible first half, though Perry looked very composed. Second half so much better, and it was Danny’s ‘finishers’ that made the difference - Thorn, Read, Akande and Lisbie were influential. Another muppet of a referee, but that’s a given in League 2 these days.

Yes, terrific finish. I liked his attitude - for a slender looking bloke, he puts himself about a bit. Thought Perry and Williams did OK. Goodwin was poor, though he didn't get much service. We deserved the point. Where was Tovide?

Luton apparently. At least they might still have some parachute money left?

Over 700 in the end, they were in good voice too, and the attendance was 5,981.

This was the 34th season for the U's opening a league campaign at home, and you have to go back to Dick Graham's 72/73 season for a better home crowd (6,083 at Layer Road vs Hereford).

Where our first home game wasn't the first league game of the season, we've only beaten that attendance once at the JobServe, under John Ward in 2010 against Sheffield Wednesday. There were 6,011 that day, but probably twice the number of visiting supporters compared to yesterday.

All in all, we are definitely moving in the right direction.

"All in all, we are definitely moving in the right direction"

......and it's only taken 18 years and £35M.

Just I minor point, but if you took the poplutation of Colchester in DG's time and compared it to today, we are probably no where near as well attended today, but I agree, it is a very welcome improvement that is not down to results, but to the feel good factor that DC/NC (and a potential change of owner), brings to the table.

You could agrue that shitfingers had the business sense to appoint DC, but I would refer you to the works of Shakespeare, a typewriter and a collection of small to medium sized primates.

LOL "poplutation" "agrue" - one of your primates isn't pulling their weight

But seriously, fair point about the growing population, but probably a stat that could be applied to almost every other football club who have seen attendances gradually dwindle relative to population since the post-war boom (no pun intended). I think the BWA also have to take significant credit for where we are now attendance-wise.

Two good honest reviews from Cowley and Crosby:

I can't really add anymore to be honest after watching the Full Match Replay on iFollow.

Game of two halves. Roll on Oldham away and another Cowley 1-1 special!

The high crowd in 72 was down to the FA cup giant killers Hereford United’s first game in the Football league after being elected during the close season .
