In one goal, he is not even looking at where his opposition player is. The Club Brugge player comes around behind him and slots the cross away without the Rangers player even bothering to go for the ball. Everything Martin does is nowhere near the required standard

"Everything Martin does is nowhere near the required standard" Indeed, and it's been obvious since about three months into his first season here. It's truly staggering how many people fell for his nonsense. It's even crazier that some still do, although they mostly stay very quiet about it now.

He took MK Don's from the play offs to mid table. He took us from the play offs to mid table. He struggled to get a very strong Southampton squad promoted via 4th place. He then assembled one of the worst premier league squads ever

I feel genuine disgust at how much this charlatan has conned football clubs out of. Remember that guy from Africa that Southampton once signed and then found out he couldn’t kick a ball? Martin is the managerial equivalent.

It's not clear at all that he will get a pay off. He was chosen by the Americans and American coaching positions have tight, almost unachievable performance measures. Fail one of those and they can sack you at no cost. Why do you think Luke Williams took a job on the floor at Bristol Airport just after he left here? Why do you think Martin said plaintively "Judge me in March"? Because he has a review point coming up soonish and wants the Board to let it ride and give him more time. The days when a sacked manager always walked away with loadsmoney are long gone, unless the Board were desperate to get him and he could negotiate. Martin was out of work and being offered promotion.

In full. OPINION Russell Martin: an imminent sacking You have to be the bravest, most obdurate director or CEO in British football to defend Russell Martin’s position as Rangers manager. The end is surely nigh for this 39 year old highly likeable ex-Southampton manager who, we now know, didn’t know what he was in for in coming to the Ibrox hot seat. Rangers’ humiliation against Club Brugge – losing 6-0 and 9-1 on aggregate – comes off the back of incompetent displays in the Scottish Premiership. The football manager in this situation is not wholly responsible. In Russell Martin’s case, he is only 90% responsible. He has brought in a stack of players – almost a new team – whose low-tempo, lightweight football has proven to be easy to shrug off by Rangers’ domestic opponents. Does Russell Martin suffer delusions of grandeur? Does he actually think: “I’m going to introduce a bit of Pep to the barren fields of Scottish football?” If so – a bit like Joey Barton nine years ago – Scottish football is giving Martin an almighty kick up the backside. So, too, is Europe. This Rangers team, under their idealogue of a manager, is flimsy. Three wins in 10 games – and that includes failing to beat Dundee, Motherwell and St Mirren – is wretched for a club of the stature of Rangers. It is because of this abysmal form that the argument about “give him time” is shot down in flames. There isn’t a smidgeon of evidence which suggests Martin is taking Rangers in the right direction. Not even a rumour of it. If he survives until Sunday – and he shouldn’t – his team will face Celtic at Ibrox. In that scenario Martin will need a minor miracle to unfold. Celtic right now are no great shakes, and themselves have just suffered a European calamity, but domestically they appear streets ahead of Rangers. A doing for the homeside this weekend and Martin will surely be sacked. I believe that, even if Rangers win against Celtic, it will be a false dawn. Martin has gathered players around him who are physical and psychological lightweights. It has been the most strange of managerial misjudgements – but if you look at his record, not his first. There is a growing hunch in Glasgow that Russell Martin fancies himself just a tad too much, and it is his undoing. GS

My personal opinion (bearing in mind I think I gave him a fair shake here, 3 or 4 months before I turned on him) is that his ego is much greatyer than his talent. he obvioulsy believes in himself with an unshakeable faith that goes over a cliff and into delusional. Yes, I personally think he is totally deluded. I think that is obvious after the phrase he used here and repeated at Southampton that he'd rather lose his way than win another way. That is not just delusional, ot is selfish and surely incompatible with employment in football anywhere in the future. A refusal to change even when you are a proven failure is (again purely my opinion) a clear sign of delusion and probably stupidity too. Any club that gives him another job should know what to expect and will only have themselves to blame. he's not a fraud (as he has been called on here I believe) he is just deluded and incapable.

Russell Martin certainly divides opinion but it’s plainly inaccurate to describe him as “ incapable and deluded “. At Rangers FC now, we all know how weak the Scottish League is and it’s arguable that the best clubs there are not good enough to play in the EFL Championship. Possibly they are League One level. So it’s not a surprise to see Rangers lose to Brugge. It’s the Rangers club and it’s entitled supporters that are in fact deluded. Martin is well aware of their limitations. Martin has a reputation for over playing. He knows that modifications are required but he’s trying to get his teams to play in a certain way and when it works it’s a joy to watch. He did quite well here and a club record unbeaten league run of twenty plus games at Southampton says a lot. He’s stubborn undoubtedly but he’s right to question the attitude of highly paid players. He is under pressure already but good luck to him.

It's been obvious since about the third or fourth month of his reign here that without a radical rethink of his entire coaching philosophy the chances of him becoming a successful manager generally, never mind in the Premier League, were basically zero. Some couldn't see the obvious right in front of them. Even now a few desperate weirdos still think he has what it takes. As you say, his primary problem is that despite numerous humiliations and his current status as perhaps the pre-eminent laughing stock of British Football his ego simply will not allow him to make the changes that he must.

Great post, except that I think he's very much a fraud! Yes, Martin reminds me so much of the Californian governor, Gavin Newsom! Sells his good looks, smooth-talking and boyish charm, and yet is able to get away with talking so poorly of others and trying to put the blame of his shortcomings on them instead of admitting his mistakes. Has his fans, media & power-brokers eating his bullsh_t out of the palm of his hand! What an egotistical, delusional BS artist!

It’s entirely accurate to describe him as such We could post a litany of defamatory epithets about him He’s one of the shrewdest operators out there but in all the wrong areas He’s not pretty either nor eye candy My missus thinks he dyes his hair for a kickoff and his hair is a mess , not contemporary nor rockn
