Preston Reflection 18:20 - Aug 9 with 3243 viewsbluenwhite10

A mixed one today, but overall the positives outweighed the negatives .

The Good

1st half performance
The pace of Doku, Dembele going forward.
Morrison.
Esquerdinha
Mbengue (1st half and at Right back.
Morgan covering at Right Back
Burrell looks a handful.

The Poor

Not getting 3 points at home to Preston.
The second half performance.
Did not create much.
Being honest I thought if someone was going to win it was going to be Preston.
Lack of experience game management.

The Very Poor

The Officials
Conceding the way we did.

Summary

Really missed Varane and his bite and I am not sure if we can play Poku, Chair and Dembele together with Madsen playing instead of Varane as it lacks ball winning bite. The squad looked more balanced. Mbengue 1st 20mins of the second half he seemed to push up blind for offside leaving us open to the ball over top but that understanding will come in time

But overall walked away feeling we are going in the right direction and not to concerned about Left Back being a problem area but maybe a little concerned how we fell away ion the second half.

MOM today between Morrison .

Also I saw play no different today than how we played under Marti.

Come on you R’s.

Not sure we learned a lot today. First half we had them confused but didn't really create enough and it feit felt like 1 goal up at half time wasn't going to be enough. Always felt like it would only take a simple tactical change for us to be found out.

I thought most of the new signings looked good which is encouraging particularly Mbengue. Morrison looked really good and liked chair in the middle and Morgan on the right. Madsen had one of his better games for us although quiet second half. Season probably hinges on getting and keeping players fit as we thought.

Preston looked very average, I think they could be bang in trouble.

We showed some bright sparks. Mbengue athleticism really jumps out, as does Burrell’s. it feels an age since we have had someone who can really make up ground, probably Bright Osayi Samuel, last.

Esquerdinha looked good, if a little raw, which is to be expected.

I thought Field looked a little leggy and clumsy today.

If we can bring in a striker and keep Poku and Dembele fit, I think we could do ok.

Nardi should be back in net from next week onwards, you don’t change a solid keeper.

First half was above all expectations given our pre-season displays and the lineup. However, Preston brought us down to their level in the 2nd.
I thought that Morgan looked great at right back and, on that showing has to be competition for Dunne, let alone Adamson.
Also Madsen had a really good 1st half and showed that a CM pairing of him and Field is possible. He took on his defensive duties well and his distribution was miles above anyone else.

There were some really scintillating movements in the first hall, especially involving Dembele, Poku and Madsen's passing. But Preston made it easy by giving us space especially in midfield.

The second hand they pressed and denied space. We struggled to get going and the defence had to work hard. Having said that we mostly defended ok and created at least one great opportunity in the second period.

No need to panic, but Stephan will need to decide if he can risk Madsen in the deep lying role. I'd love him to succeed. He is the best passer of the ball at the club and made a few challenges and used his height. But if Varane comes in who drops out? You could make a case for playing Madsen instead of Chair, but I wouldn't.

Celar didn't do much. I know most fans have given up on him, but this is a new
season and he needs a few games. Burrell looked exciting when he came on. It's a long time since we've seen a striker like that.

For me the biggest question is over Walsh whose distribution was poor, including one free kick straight into touch. He needs a few games as well, but Nardi, if he stays, will be breathing down his neck.

A lot of good performances, but I think Morrison was my MotM.

Thought Morgan was outstanding first half and switched play brilliantly at times.
He faded really badly second half though . Night and day performance.

Morgan looked much bigger (in a good way) and more confident. Thought he was very comfortable at right back and linked up with Poku well.

I thought all of the new players did well and Mbengue excelled. Fast and physical, played some good balls, wanted to be involved in everything. Him and Morrison looked quite exciting as a partnership; their styles compliment each other nicely.

Fair assessment. Thought today summed up how far our striker expectations have fallen. Celar getting praise for two neat lay offs all game whilst doing literally nothing else and Durrell drawing huge cheers....for closing down a defender. Did like the look of him though.

Dembele was excellent, but cramp? My lord. And yet more injuries.

We’ve got some decent footballers and if the opposition agree to play nice I reckon we’d do well.

Unfortunately I’ve noticed that a lot of teams don’t want to play nice and as seen in the second half today, they start doing things like tackling, knocking our players off the ball and generally roughing us up.

It’s particularly unfair as we’ve got some very small players and if they’re not careful they get hurt.
And some of the big ones.

Hopefully the EFL will stop all the nastiness so we can avoid relegation.

While the first half was encouraging it was them who scored for us. The second half downturn in performance was troubling and reflected the fact it was our seventh consecutive home league game without a win following on from the end of last season. The sooner we pick up three points at home the better as last season took an age...

I’m fairly sure magnesium would fix the cramp issue and would hope the medical team would dish it out before the game. It’s happened two weeks in a row with Dembele.

What’s more puzzling is if we actually know what our best 11 (plus subs as like for like replacements) would be if everyone was actually fit ?

I know it’s unlikely (everyone is fit) but if it’s proving difficult to answer that question, which remains even more elusive after today, I do wonder how we recruit and plan for the season.

I admire the flexibility and versatility of players that can adapt but it never feels like you get the best out of them. Morgan did really well today for 50-60 mins but do we really want him at RB every game ?

As for players in starting positions, I thought Celar did OK at times but then he took up positions just like Dykes used to. Wrong place, wrong time.

Field’s touch let him down several times and three of our players let PNE through for the goal, watching each other on the way.

Poku did well before he was injured, chance to score aside:

Walsh had some worrying moments but the defence was mostly well organised by Morrison.

Long throws could become useful again but short corners are still not.

Nearly had a new accidental Partridge with the dodgy ‘cheating’ tackle and faking injuries….tongues were bitten on commentary.

We’ll probably need some different refs than today’s, Steve.

Thought we played really well first half then made a stupid mistake in the 2nd and never really recovered.

MOTM was Mbengue by a mile but special mention for Dembele who I thought was excellent

Something to build on I suppose but bottom half again on that showing

OG is continuing his form in front of goal from last season for the R's.

A friend of mine made his first trip to LR in about 8 years after a long illness spell, was brilliant to see him again.

I had a lovely chat on the train home with what felt like the Preston equivalent of me and my Dad. They were good company for 75 minutes, shook their hands when getting off and wished them all the best.

Going into this year is the most down I've felt about QPR for years with the way Marti was forced out and the unqualified fool running the show and I'm desperate to be wrong about all of it but ultimately I haven't seen anything today to make me think this isn't going to be a long hard winter.

There was lots of good about some of our play - but it was Preston. I fear the big monied sides are just going to steamroller us. And interestingly the Preston guys on the train felt exactly the same about us.

Yeah, pretty much how I saw it.

Decent first half, if let down by some last third decision making, but just felt promising and that sort of thing needs more time.
But how quickly we turned soft when they put us under the slightest pressure.

I thought they looked terrible.. Which is why there's perhaps some of the reaction on here. If we can't beat that, then this is going to be a long season. Again

We have certainly seen worse Managerial league debuts,. thought the team look reasonably well laid out with each player knowing their roles. Not much to ask for but not always a given.
Saw times when we kept ball well and played into space. Both full backs did well, as did both wingers.
Unlucky a couple of times when Field fluffed his lines in the box, sat there and thought if only that had fallen to someone else.
Celar did not do enough but he also had zero balls played in to the box that he could have a go at.
How lucky are we to have Chair though, looked good, still chasing balls right up to the last minute.
As has been said, going to be a long tough season fighting relegation unless a couple more come through the door and we can some how avoid picking up these injuries

First game of the season. He'll get there. He's excellent. I'd trust him in goal.

Never knowingly right.

Our RB cover is so bad that we have to play Morgan there ? Fair play he did okay

A hamstring and cramp for two players does not a well prepared team make

How many shots on target from actual alive, living and breathing QPR players today at home against pretty Duffy opponents? I’m saying NIL

To be honest I expected a defeat but on reflection that’s two BIG points dropped today and what I saw from us confirmed my fears.
Strap in people ….. this one will get even bumpier

According to match stats we had 3 shots on target.

We were lucky that PNE are so gash.

We now know which three teams are worse than us:
Sheff Wed, PNE and Oxford

PNE were up against a team with no known RB, reserve Keeper, youth team LB, Celar (cannot trap a bad of cement) and Madsen (won't press even if he's the nearest player).

No Champ team should fear that lineup, but PNE were so bad that they let that QPR team dominate them. That's 3 points missed for them and they will need the points.

We were lucky that Sam Field had a stormer and blocked everything. And that PNE got their tactics totally wrong. 5 at the back with no real wingers to test our fake fullbacks. Morgan and Esquerdinha were not tested that hard, real Champ wingers would cause way more problems. PNE seems to have an average RB in their new signing small.

Mbengue and Morrison were pretty solid, too. But they had to be with Madsen and Celar in the team. This was like watching two bad L1 teams.

At least Poku, Chair and Demeble held onto the ball enough that PNE did not have much possession to hurt us with. Poku needs some time to get better, Chair was industrious and Demeble is showing his class, but I am afraid he won't last the season.

zzzzzzzzzz

Bearing in mind we were missing nearly half of our first team and the bench was very inexperienced I think we have treat the point positvely. Overall the performance was decent, hard working with a couple of players standing out.

What has happened with player management? For the past two seasons we have seen players being withdrawn on the hour mark. pre planned by the sports scientists but yesterday there was nothing. I know hindsight is a wonderful thing but Poku has had previous hamstring problems, first game of the season, surely a prime candidate for being subbed on the hour. 67th minute he is injured, Dembele plays on until he cramps up on the 82nd minute. One extreme to the other.

Pre-season a complete dogs dinner so we're under cooked and going through it now. Not the coaches fault as he only came in himself mid summer and had no idea what he was working with.

Always harp back to the Neil Warnock promo season. Knew what he needed and who wasnt needed. Flew out the traps, all the essential business done before the season had started. He wouldn't have accepted cramps and pulled hamstrings in game 1.
