“Saints need a new striker” 14:23 - Aug 10 with 807 viewsJoiedevivre

Despite it only been a game in, Jo Tessem has stated on the BBC that Downs is not ready for this level *yet* and that Saints once again need a new striker.

For me, Armstrong works hard to win the ball back but his finishing is suspect. Stewart was the only one to begin winning aerial duels and this was from 80 minutes into the game: the best of the three yesterday. But is it good enough to get out of this league?

We are crying out for the figure of a Kieffer Moore. I thought he was excellent for Wrexham yesterday, despite coming off very early.

I was surprised RS didn't start yesterday. I think he should be leading the line.
I was also gutted that Downs missed the ball completely for the winner. I hope hes not another striker who misses all the sitters.

He is right.

After seeing the pre-season games and the first league game, I expect Will Still agrees.

Why we keep wasting tens of millions of pounds on duds "potential from abroad", I just don't know. There are players who scored 20 plus goals in league one and the championship last season. They have proved they can do it. We bought Lambert for one million From Bristol Rovers after scoring 25 plus goals in league one. You just knew he would be good.

So we buy an unproven player, too young, who scored a few goals in an inferior league in another country. Just buy one of the many Rickie Lamberts available, who already live in this country, know the English leagues and have proven themselves. Can it really be that difficult and expensive?

"Oh look, he scored 25 goals in league one last year and wouldn't cost too much. 5 million is a big fee for a league one club."

"Nah, let's look in outer Mongolia, Armenia, Hawaii, Beijing and North Korea. We might find a player for 15 million plus with potential."

"Yeah, yeah great idea. We can make him great, and sell him him for 80 million as he's only 19. Yeah yeah"

Is it to be stubborn? Is it to make things difficult for the manager? There are goal scorers across the British leagues. Just buy one of them and be done with it.

Poll: Who do we want as the new permanent Saints manager?

I don't think we need just another "striker". We've got half a dozen of those already. AA, Archer etc. are adequate strikers if played in the correct position. What we need is specifically a centre forward. As you say, someone like Moore (or Tall Paul!).

Maybe Stewart or Downs can do the job but WS seems to doubt them.

Wasn’t Downs being fouled?

I’m not convinced Downs is typically a leader of the line, and / or whether his playing history shows this.

Poll: Would you be happy with Rishi Sunak as a new Saints owner?

Downs was a 6.5m punt, so I'm guessing the club won't be devastated if he doesn't work out.

From watching the whole of a FC Koln game on YouTube where he played I'd say he's more Mara than Che Adams.

In terms of quality or favoured playing position?

If you mean quality, then we do indeed need to look at other options.....

Neither, it’s simply that our current owners and their employees don’t have the faintest clue as to what they are doing.

If they did, we wouldn’t have been relegated from The Premier League twice in three seasons.

From this particular game and I appreciate its a little harsh to judge him fully on this, but he's not a player that gets really involved in the match.

We already have Archer who is basically a passenger unless he's presented with chances, and Downs so far seems the same but with added height tbf.

We need a focal point, an outlet who's strong enough to bring others into the game..like Rickie or Che.

Stewart maybe able to do this but I suspect his fragile body will let him down again.
Maybe Downs given a few games will show this....hopefully, because I can't see us bringing another striker in.
