New Refreshments in Northam Concourse 16:52 - Aug 24 with 1541 viewsCARDIFFSAINT

My first visit this season yesterday and what the hell has happened in the concourse at the Northam end? Last season I visited for the Man City home game and enjoyed a pint of Kingfisher which I thought wasn’t too bad, yesterday with this new self service system I bought a pint of Asahi, what the hell have we done? I won’t be buying anymore of that! Just another example of how we shoot ourselves in the foot, if it ain’t broke then don’t fix it! Anyone else feel the same or is it just me? After getting the train from Cardiff I was really looking forward to a nice pint! Terry

I find if you have enough pints before kick off (in one of the City boozers) not only does it a) numb what is happening on the pitch, but b) sufficiently refreshes me long enough to return to one of the aforementioned without the need for half time shenanigans. Cannot drink any of that shíte on offer at the ground.

Kingfisher is lovely if you’re sat on a beach in Goa in the sunshine and it costs £1 , it’s not lovely out of a-plastic glass at st Mary’s for £7.20.

How does it compare cost wise to other Fun Fairs, which is what St Mary’s ( Hospitality, Fans Zones The Dell Pub, Climbing Walls ) has become, with a football team as an afterthought ?

I dont think you are being fair there, football clubs have to explore other income streams, certainly the fan zones are popular and for a small outlay the club are now raking it in with much increased revenue from food and drink, yes it is overpriced but it all goes into the club funds, it's not to my personal taste but for a sizeable chunk of the supporter base it enhances their trip to the game. Likewise the Dell Pub

Likewise hospitality, if you go on a plane then you chose whether to sit in first class and pay £8,000 or so to get to New York, but because of that the rest of us can go for £600, it generates income for the club which in turn pays players wages and provides transfer income.

A Climbing wall is a bit strange, but I would imagine the outlay is fairly small given that it is on our own land, so no rental costs or increased rates, so just the cost of the equipment.

If it gets people to the ground including kids who then spend money in the Dell pub and Megastore then it is doing a job.

I will slag off those running the club when they deserve it, but this is 2025 and not 1975, the forward thinking clubs are looking at every income stream they can to raise money, I do not have a problem with that.

Did you know Stoke City provided free, yes completely free travel to their fans for the game, and do this for every Stoke away game. A club that thinks about and respects its fans, rather than trying to suck as much money from its fanbase as possible?

It would.be nice if the loyal fans who have been to every game for years, through two relegations, could be rewarded for their loyalty in some way, one free away trip, like Stoke do with their fans.

Perspective - how many climbing frames, slides, ghost trains or fan zones will it take to cover say Charles or Wellington’s wage? And that is not picking them out for rough treatment (as if I’d referred to Stephens I would have been accused of an agenda no doubt)

Bought 5 pints (Asahi) before the game ready to collect at half time, half time comes along and the young girl says i can only collect 4 and need my manager to authorise the 5th !! The manager was changing the barrel and came out 5 minutes before the players came back out !! I thought this was all about saving time, also what were they they doing all first half to then change the barrel at the busiest time of the day.

Why allow us to buy 5 pints if your not allowed to serve 5 pints, not her fault but come on Southampton FC, not good enough.

They provided free travel?

Pah!I thought their numbers were piss poor for a team making such a good start. They didn't seem that vocal either.
