We have no fewer than 14 players currently out on loan. The majority are from the dev squad but I can't remember a time when there were more than this at any one time.

Interesting how this plays out as we seem to be signing plenty of them, then loaning out for an early taste of mens 1st team.

Are we expecting them to 'smash it' at that level or at least show some signs of development? And if they struggle its perhaps one more chance then see ya on to the next, a firm deadline at 21yrs old if the're not breaking through? Survival of the fittest..

Judging by the strength of the bench last night, I’d expect Bennie and Pearman will be sent out too, they’re nowhere near 1st team right now.

Sutton couldn't even get any minutes at all in Morecambe's last game, a 5-2 home gubbing by Gateshead.

Lloyd, where has he gone to? I wonder if the lad has a future with us?

Leyton Orient.

He's injured and hasn't played for them yet.

I'm not sure I'd put an 18 year old loanee into that balls up. They were 4-0 down after 12 minutes.

This is my concern with the players that we have loaned out. If they're as good as we have been led to believe, then surely a few more of them would have been loaned to sides in the top league at non-league level: National League, a very good standard, and getting decent amount of minutes.

Even Aaron Drewe's playing regularly in the National League with Woking and Joe Gubbins is playing some games at Southend.

With Dillon to Torquay today, we've currently got 15 players out on loan. 10 of them are from the Dev squad or 18s so it's no wonder the DS suffered a 4-0 drubbing v Swansea's U21s earlier this week.

That's an observation not a complaint, but it can't be easy for Furs to manage DS games when so many players are unavailable.

I've not known so many youngsters to be continually pushed out on loan as this. I assume it's a combination of club development policy and better quality players that lower league clubs want to take. Hopefully, we'll see the rewards in the not too distant future.

EDIT - we've also got the 3 lads away at the U20 World cup.

The challenge for these guys coming through isn’t just being the best in their age group. To break into the 1st team they need to prove they can outshine grown men already playing their position. That’s a brutal step up.

Take Sutton at Morecambe as an example. Is he really going to offer more than someone like Jack Nolan (24 yr old, 100 professional games, 20 goals) even if I’ve never actually seen Nolan play? Hard to say. Then you’ve got players like Kolli or Esquerdina who, despite being raw, are somewhat deemed as Champ-level talents straight out of the gate, while someone like Tuck is plugging away four leagues lower and doing alright.

The reality is, the National League and below is full of ex-academy players who once looked destined for the top but never quite made that final leap. Its a tough gig for these lads.

Some very good observations Pdog. I'm sure you're right.

I've often wondered how much plain old luck plays a part in a successful football career, such as injuries in a certain position resulting in a run of games for a youngster. And, of course, staying injury free can count for a lot too.

It's not exactly accurate but let's take the 20 premier league clubs and assume they have 15 players per year group. If you're lucky, you might average one a year per team breaking through and that feels aggressive.

That's still 280 players, each year, that are in way better academies than our own and don't make it just from premier league clubs, a bunch of whom will try their chance in the lower leagues. It's definitely competitive out there.
