Thank you for your service 12:13 - Sep 19 with 3128 views | trampie | I've noticed the 'thank you for your service' line is being used by the right wing now over here in Blighty, its an American thing pushed by their state after the blow back from the public after Vietnam.

I seen a couple of right wing blogs or is it vlogs leading up to and during the recent march in London to see what they were saying and they were interviewing people and saying 'thank you for your service' if they had been in the military, then I seen a youtuber from Kaardiff who goes round the place say the same thing to somebody down here, its a new one on me, checked it out and apparently its a recent decades thing in America but not a thing over here, well not until now.

Thank you for your service on 15:59 - Sep 19 with 2857 views | JACKMANANDBOY | About 30 years ago, I was in a queue in Atlanta airport to place an order in a restaurant, well nearly a restaurant. In front of me was a middle aged woman and ahead of her was a young guy in uniform. When it was his turn to pay the middle aged woman said excuse me to the cashier and paid for the soldier's meal. I smiled at her and she said that her son was in the air force. For clarification she was not wearing a SS uniform or wearing a sheet over her head.

Democracy doesn't defend itself, the servicemen and women are there to do that. It might be an American import but can you say it is a bad thing?

I’ve no idea, but from I’ve seen during my visits to the US it’s clear that they value the contributions their servicemen /women and vets have or are making. Squaddies don’t earn a great deal and I’d like to see the U.K. do a bit to recognise and value the contribution its service personnel (and veterans) make.
Thank you for your service on 08:20 - Sep 20 with 2496 views | Boundy | Simple question for you , how do you know that the person making the comment is right wing or any wing in fact ? , maybe their just appreciative of the role our military have in keeping you & I safe from the bogey man. Strange that a simple statement can be construed into how some people are put into a convenient tick box.

Was out and about with my 6 Yr old last week. Saw a couple of squaddies in uniform and she asked about them. Straight answer. They are the people who look after us and keep us safe. [Post edited 20 Sep 8:31]

Can't argue with that . It seems that even a small gesture of thanking someone irks some people.

I’m not ex military but I’ve supervised them in Plod and they always had your back in confrontations I will defend them to the hilt This country dumps on old people too who have gone through much strife Kids show zero respect too NI was nasty , very nasty and troops, Welsh included , went into the Fire to stop them killing each other Fifty years later , paratroopers are on trial when IRA commanders are or were politicians taking money from the British government but refusing to actually attend because they wouldn’t or couldn’t swear alliegance to the Crown

It’s not the sentiment I object to; far, far from it. As an example (bad one maybe) it’s like British golf crowds shouting ‘in the hole!’. It’s really just not us. A more reserved show of appreciation rather than a direct copy (words and tone) of the US would be better.

Thank you for your service on 11:00 - Sep 21 with 1811 views | jack_lord | I'm not fond of us copying American sayings but at the same time there is nothing wrong for thanking someone for their service. These young men and women are basically putting their lives on the line for quite a modest income. Watching a serviceman returning in a casket and then watching an ex serviceman being quizzed for action 50 years ago is such a paradox. The American lady should be applauded for buying a meal because gratitude from a civilian is more appreciated than non committal from a government that doesn't care.
