Michi Frey has had his contract extended a year, so to 2027 I believe.

I'm not sure how much playing time he's going to get given our new strike force, but he's a good one to have in reserve.

I really like Frey, as fun as he is big, but I'm not sure a repeatedly unfit and unavailable 31yo striker who can't do 90mins and has minimal re-sell value warrants a deal beyond the year option we've already taken...

Yeah unless we’re talking about a deal with a heavily weighted appearance pay packet, this isn’t a good call for me. Appreciate we will never know that so a bit of a nothing statement, but we need to learn as a club that, with our budget in the modern game, we need players who are available. JCS being the best CB in the treatment room is no good to anyone.

They’ve learnt some lessons from last year, but deals to Frey/Hayden/JCS in last 12 months don’t suggest to me that they’ve yet understood the best ability is availability.

Frey is a strange one,

I thought it was a huge and unnecessary risk we took in relying on him last season as our 1st choice Centre Forward due to his inability to win headers with his back to goal & lack of mobility to press opposition defences, attributes last years team needed from our Centre Forward,

This season however with a very different style of play, with 10's / Wingers who get the ball into the box early, Frey has proven with his good movement in the box there's goals in him,

If the price is right, a good understudy to Kone.

Not sure about this one.

If this extension takes him from 2026 to 2027 (we're guessing) that will be an extension for a 32-year old who even now is rarely available, and rarely fit when available.
Wouldn't we be better off spending that money on someone we're developing?

I'm just not sure I see the logic.

Could it just be spreading his cost over additional years for FFP.? Or possibly it's just securing him for this season. As you say it's just guessing, but what we do know is he hasn't been able to stay available.

Risk implies we had a choice. Was always going to be a basement bin signing.

I agree Brian I think we should be looking for a younger player, I can't see any sell on value here which I thought was the plan. Also it's possible that he will block the pathway of a younger player.
I don't disagree he could come on now and do a job, if fit, in my opinion he always gives 100% + but I think we should be looking for a younger player.

We also extended Field in a similar fashion. I don't think Field nor Frey will be with QPR this time next year. I imagine both extensions are about squad maintenance and investment protection: 1st team-ready players for this season that you can move on for next. Rather that than loans. We already sign loads of kids for the future - need some players we can rely on too.

Clearly neither Field/Fret are first choice in their positions now, but neither are any longer in their final year with the club - which is important. Both will probably play big roles in the thick of this season, but they won't be part of the evolving game model, I imagine. There's a logic to all this that they probably can't explain to us now but will be able to in retrospect, I'm guessing.

I like Frey, especially when he comes on as sub, full of energy and aggression. A real handful for defenders when he’s at his best. Didn’t he notch up nine goals last season, which is not to be sniffed at!
