BBC story about feral teenagers in Shirley 10:03 - Sep 25 with 2877 viewssaint901

I see that the BBC is headlining with a piece about teenagers in Shirly engaging in a range of what might be described as anti social behaviours in Shirley. Specifically causing trouble in shops.

The key point seems to be that these teenagers have no respect for law or the police and are treating them with contempt.

How would you deal with them?

A visit to the parents who seem to have lost all ability to control their children and perhaps punishment (fines, short custody sentences) for the parents?

Arresting the teenagers and holding them in borderline unpleasant places for say a week? (And risk such a detention being seen as a badge of honour or rite of passage?

More police on the street to discourage them?

Allow the shopkeepers to retaliate? I'm thinking that a water pistol behind the counter filled with some sort of dye might be deterrent enough?

Security on the shop doors (who pays?)

In my younger days the local bobby would think nothing about giving us a verbal telling off - sometimes with a clip around the ear - as a warning, then telling our parents and only then going more formal. That seems to be anathema to today's snowflakes.

Lock them in a cell with this incredibly fascinating tactical insight on repeat.
The sound of Mr Monotone & Spitty C should break em in no time.

We thought that we had the answers, It was the questions we had wrong.

More police on the street will just mean more police for the kids to give the run around to.

Instead put the money into boxing clubs, youth clubs, places where they learn different stuff around music and art. Get them to do taster sessions on stuff they don’t do at school.

Sit down and listen to them, get Saints foundation, have people with lived experience speak to them and tell them how mind numbingly dull and utterly shit prison is despite what they might see or hear on TV and social media.

Actually have people who know what they’re talking about try to resolve it and not politians.

I'd go with the OP's "Allow the shopkeepers to retaliate with water pistols behind the counter " option - except I'd fill them with eye burning pepper spray.

Easier said than done. When we used to have a youth club near us, the teenagers had fights with each other involving snooker cues, equipment got smashed up with their tempers, staff were being filmed on phones, the teenagers got together to smoke drugs, staff were falsely accused of all sorts if things so they couldnt get the staff and it became impossible to run, staff and manage.

I have seen the bbc report. No excuse for racist, thuggish behaviour. They need to be stopped, simple as that. The police say they can't arrest them as they are underage. And that's why they keep doing it. Shopkeepers should be allowed to protect their premises, but of course they would end up in court for getting rough with the feral darlings. No consequences, it's the same in the schools and that's why they do it, because they can.

“I know these kids. Um, I've worked in the areas we're talking about, around Lambeth, Lewisham, I know their problems, I know their frustrations, lack of community facilities, I know their parents...and in my opinion, Professor Duff's suggestion that we should cut off their goolies is the only solution”.
Nod to BBC’s Not the nine o’clock news, it might have been some forty years ago, but who’s to say they they weren’t on the right track.

Import the spray they use to repel bears in the States - it’s basically pepper spray on steroids! In mega sized canisters, it delivers a huge blast of spray at every squeeze of the trigger and certainly one these little runts would not come back to face for a second time in a hurry. Seen it used on a few road rage instant karma videos online as some Americans have taken to carrying in their cars just in case they need it. Certainly works a treat from what I have seen.

We have had short sharp shocks in the past including borstal and high use of custody and record numbers of ASBOs issued under successive Govts particularly during the Blair years. Neither had much impact. What we have seen is the wholesale destruction of youth services and sure start programmes aimed at supporting families which have proven to be effective but years of short sighted austerity have put paid to.

As for National service. There is no way our armed forces are anywhere near equipped to deal with millions of young people. If people want it then be prepared for tax hikes to pay for it.

people might just be prepared to pay for it if it prevented some of the lawlessness going on at the moment, probably cheaper than putting them in institutions, anyway we will probably need a bigger army in the future anyway the way things are going.

There is no way compulsory national service will return. Those days are long gone. Reform will probably suggest it then realise it’s another bonkers idea that in reality won’t ever happen.

News report about Portsmouth tonight too. Country is overwhelmed with anti social behaviour, teenagers completely ruining people's lives and their livelihoods. The police just say they don't have the resources. Youths running free throughout Britain's cities. It's disgusting when you see older people, ladies on their own, having thugs right outside their door.

And who remembers nearly 1000 officers, arresting 90 year olds for holding up a cardboard sign? People's lives being made an absolute misery by thugs, no resources sorry.

Maybe the ID cards will help 😭

there is something very wrong with this country. Dare I say, maybe religion does help (I am non religious) but that does give a sense of community and some understanding of life. I've lived in Asian countries/places (Bali/Thailand) and they don't have such prevalent problems. Just finding a link here. Parents defo need a talking to though, jeez!

Sounds like a rerun of a local BBC story from a number of weeks back. I’m sure the police explained they had arrested the main female causing the problems. I would suggest shop staff wear cctv cameras to gain any further evidence. The shoplifting problem is a million times worse it has to be said.
