The New Forest 12:30 - Sep 30 with 941 viewsDorsetIan

I've got a friend visiting from outside the UK this weekend and we're driving through it so I thought about stopping at and showing them the New Forest.

I don't really know it, so grateful for any tips of where to go for maybe a walk or a mooch around. Is there a typical New Forest place?

Thank you.

Personally I like the Beaulieu area, but there are plenty of other options.

Acres Down - Beaulieu Road Station Car Park - Eyeworth Pond Fritham would be three that enable you to embark on some good walks. The Rhinefield Ornamental Drive is beautiful at this time of year too.

Boldre is nice, there are nice walks through the enclosures opposite the Red Shoot at Linwood.

Lyndhurst would be an ideal place to start, with a walk up the high street and visitors centre. It has good parking and has some nice pubs and numerous tea rooms/coffee shops. Can get busy but should be fine this time of year.

There is easy access to Forest from Lyndhurst to see Pony's etc. It's not uncommon to see the pigs out in Autumn, as they eat the acorns that harm the pony's. This is an old tradition called New Forest Panage, that starts around Mid September until Mid November.

If feeling energetic. a walk from Lyndhurst High Street to Bank (The Oak Inn) is a nice walk through forest (Probably a mile or 2 only) or upto Emery Down.

From Lyndhurst, a visit to Brockenhurst nearby (say 3-4 miles ?) is worthwhile, where the Ponys roam freely.

The walk from Beaulieu to Bucklers Hard is lovely, park up on the road at the top by the garden centre, cut through the little pass by the school and its lovely country, riverwalks to Bucklers Hard.

Bolderwood is a cracking walk too.

Just to confuse you a bit more, the Ornamental Drive and walks as below are probably "typical" Forest

Not sure if the top car park is still open this time of year (Standing Hat) but if not I would highly recommend parking up at Tilery Road car park and then walking up to Standing Hat Inclosure and walking one of many loops. Blóody beautiful in and around there and hopefully pretty quiet on numbers. Pump Balmer Lawn, Brockenhurst in your SatNav and you should find it.

Must admit, there have been occasions on a Sunday when Saints have been playing at home where I have sacked the shíte off and taken the dog for a six or seven mile stroll there. Far more enjoyment imho

Ready and waiting to mop up those European places......

With a little more thought I would probably ignore my original recommendation and do Bucklers Hard / Beaulieu I think. A bit more range of things to see. One place I would avoid tho if is Lyndhurst as a) getting in and out and b) it gets busy with numbers

Yes, you can park for free at Beaulieu and then walk to Buckler's Hard and back. It's a pleasant, easy walk of just under 5 miles in total.

Walking into the forest from Bolton's Bench, just outside Lyndhurst, is good if you want to see animals and possibly the most typical New Forest place.

Fritham is another fairly typical New Forest place with the added bonus of the Royal Oak, which is a great pub to stop at.

The circular walk from Rockbourne Roman Villa car park to Whitsbury, Rockbourne and back is beautiful and interesting. (I'd put Rockbourne up there with East Meon and Wherwell as one of the prettiest villages in Hampshire).

For details of walks in the area, including those and others in the New Forest, I recommend the AA's 50 Walks in Hampshire & the Isle of Wight.

In laws used to have their boat in the marina there, so know it quiet well. It is a beautiful spot. Apart from the dinner lady sacking Sir Jim's house that is.

That's all really helpful. Bucklers Hard is getting a lot of votes, so that could be the option.

But all the local knowledge is appreciated. Thank you all.

Dependent how long ago, no doubt they would have known Mike the Harbour Master there. I was at the Agamemnon Yard for a couple of years.

Makes us all realise that while our football team may presently be in a less than optimal position, living in such a beautiful part of the world has its compensations.

One of my favourites. The ford at Moyles Court watching the ponies drink water and the close by Alice Lyle Pub. Some Second World War history available at nearby Ibsley with its now redundant airfield and a thought provoking memorial to those who made the supreme sacrifice, including some pilots from the U S A who answered the call.

Poll: Where will we finish in the upcoming season?
