Only my humble view, but we had a far superior set of players last time around and just scraped promotion…….. A couple of wins propels us right up the table however am not entirely confident we are capable of going on any form of run. On the one hand we need promotion, but the other it would be another calamity as we would require huge investment.

The most recent season you mention is 2009-10, which was 16 years ago. As I said, this is "the worst Saints squad I've seen for years". Anyway, I had a look at our 2009-10 squad and it was better than our current one. Back then we had Lambert, Fonte, Schneiderlin, Lallana and Michail Antonio. Oxlade-Chamberlain was also in the squad. but only made a couple of appearances. If only we had players as good as that now. [Post edited 6 Oct 11:16]

Fonte only came in the January but drastically improved the squad. Antonio scored at Wembley in the JPT, but in the League was a bit of a disaster, he started just 14 games plus another 14 off the bench , for most of the season he was not great. He scored 3 goals in the last 5 games, these were the only goals he scored in the League, he was young and raw his career never really took off till he went to Sheffield Wednesday in 2012 on a free transfer, Forest signed him for £1.5 million and after a year sold him to West Ham in 2015 for £7 million there he truly blossomed. When you look that we used 38 players that season, about 5 key players held the team together but struggled due to those around them, other regulars included. Lloyd James 30 League games Papa Waigo 35 Paul Wotton 26 Jon Otsembor 19 Neil Trotman 18 Lee Barnard 20 Joseph Mills 16 We had a decent 6 a side team, but a poor squad

Until you compare it with the better squads in the division, like Leicester's. What we have is a uniformly average squad from which you could get 2 teams capable of scraping a draw with other lower mid-table Championship teams, when what we really need is a standout first team, who can thrash the average teams in the division, with a few back-up players to cover for injuries. Sport Republic's recruitment strategy is fundamentally flawed. [Post edited 6 Oct 12:23]

Maybe Leicesters can compare, but not the rest. Up front we have 3 strikers capable of a a goal every 2.5 games not many squads have that. In the centre of the midfield we have Shea Charles player of the year at Sheffield Wednesday last season, we have Flynn Downes a vital part of the promotion squad last year, we have Finn Azaz a player who was the most highly rated player in the Championship for the last 3 years, we also have Caspar Jander a decent looking signing. Out wide we have Ryan Fraser who is still good, we have Tom Fellows again a highly respected player at this level, we have Leo Scienza whom the jury is out, we also have Jay Robinson who Still doesnt know where to play who for one reason or another is getting little game time at present. At the back we have Taylor Harwood Bellis who scored for England this time last year who cant get in the side, we have Ronnie Edwards, a revelation at this level for QPR last season, Nathan Wood a solid player at this level and Quarshie, whose distribution in the early games perhaps got him more criticism than he deserved, even Captain Jack who would get in some Championship sides. At full back Manning is experienced at this level and we signed two experienced Danish Internationals who both cant get in the side, whats going on there. Even in goal we have two keeper who whatever you think got us over the line two years ago. Then there is Sam Edozie & Joe Aribo, why are they not getting a game ? This is a big squad with when compared to most of the other sides some quality in it, so what is going wrong ?

Southampton At Derby County The Verdict on 13:43 - Oct 6 with 1004 views | Southamptonfan | I think Nick is suggesting that the manager is the problem at the moment and I would totally agree. I would agree that we have a "reasonable" squad that is underperforming without a doubt. The players do not know what they are doing and it's a mess on the pitch. I absolutely think a better, more experienced manager would get more out of these. Fellows is a proven goal scorer and provides assists. So was Azaz at Boro. But they are failing under this manager. Having said that, we needed a new goalkeeper and a new striker and have done since we said this after losing Ings. I remember posting on here with Nick, during the preseason friendly at home. We were a complete mess and went 2 nil down. We did pull it back to 2 all, but we were all.over the place. The signs were there from the very start. But ultimately again Nick, who appointed Will Still? Who appointed Johanes? It's mistake after mistake, year after year. Something is wrong and something was wrong last year too. We are being run disastrously. [Post edited 6 Oct 13:48]

Southampton At Derby County The Verdict on 13:51 - Oct 6 with 987 views | SonicBoom | It appears Still has no idea what his best side is. Each week we "hope" that he finds a combination that suddenly wins 4 nil. When we don't he throws everything out the window and starts again. For the life of me I can't work out what our identity or pattern of play is. Koeman and Pochettino had clear plans, even Ralph did for a while until near the end when he went mental. The late lamented Russel Martin's teams clearly had some plan that they were following. Ok it was boring and didn't work but at least there was some hint that the players had been instructed. Are we a pressing team, or a counter attacking time? I have no idea. I suspect neither does he, but if you rip up the teamsheet and start again every Monday I'm not sure you're going to find out.

My memory of Antonio was different than yours. Yes he was raw and capable of a poor performance but he was a winger for us and his pace and power made him unplayable at times. I was really hoping we'd sign him and I thought the club wanted too but would pay the 1m reading were asking .

Southampton At Derby County The Verdict on 15:03 - Oct 6 with 860 views | TimSaint | Overly harsh on Manning. Yes he should have accepted it and got on with it, instead of arguing so much with the Lino, but so many others could have done so much netter. It was headed in from just inside the 6 yard box, so AMcC should have definitely come for it, instead of staying rooted to his line in the middle of goal. Perhaps he didn't want to take a whack ? It was bizarre, because he come off his line to catch or punch on many other occasions during the game. It was p1ss poor marking from our defence, especially Edwards - perhaps they were expecting AMcC to come and claim it ? Apart from that McCarthy had a great game, bar a few distribution issues and Charles had one of his best games for us. Sadly I have to mention Damion Downs. How the fvck is he getting anywhere near our first team squad ? His performance was embarrassing. Honestly, Ali Dia was better !! He has no first touch, can't control it, can't time his jumps, can't head it and can't lay it off - let alone press, make a run, or have a shot. When he did win a header, it went off his '50p head' to the wrong side of the pitch. The Saints fans sarcastically cheered when he eventually got 1 pass completed !! It was crazy that he was on the pitch and even crazier that WS kept him on til the end - perhaps out of stubbornness. Archer would have offered so much more. We likened his performance to him being the last kid to be picked in a school football match. The players deliberately didn't pass to him because they know how sh1t he is and then very occasionally they would try to keep him interested by giving him a touch, which invariably meant us losing possession. Surely WS has learnt this by now - we can all see it.

We've had 7 different managers under Sport Republic already. I doubt that an 8th one would be any better. Sport Republic's recruitment strategy is the root cause of our problems. They have little interest in building a Championship winning team. Their priority is buying and selling young players. [Post edited 6 Oct 15:14]

I had a look at his stats to see if I was wrong after all it was 16 years ago. I don't think I was he started just 14 games yet managed to complete just 2 and he came on as a sub 14 times, total of 1.216 minutes football. In one of those starts, a defeat at Wycombe he was taken off after just 34 minutes. Yes he was unplayable at times I suppose that is why Pardew didn't pay him much. He improved in the last month of his stay as I said he scored 3 goals and got 1 assist, his only contributions in the League that season all coming in the last 7 games in the final month of the season. He was better in cup games for some reason and that is perhaps why he is remembered fondly for a goal and an assist at Wembley in the JPT final. After he left he did little of note for a couple of years, his career only taking off in 2014

I think you are right How Downs makes the squad let alone gets the nod over Archer is astonishing I also think Still is creating bigger issue with his poor man management, dropping Fellows and Azaz without a real reason, playing Downs ahead of anyone else etc, Robinson vanishing after two great games, Jewett not getting. look in after a solid game against Liverpool All smacks of someone learning as they go. which isnt a good look

Easily one of the best squads in the championship . A decent striker and we would be top 6 . It’s not Will Stills fault he’s managing a team without a decent striker to play with Armstrong / Archer Midfield is good and defence. McCarthy now playing well . The only one of the new signings not performing is Azaz. [Post edited 6 Oct 18:01]
