Looks like both sides are going for it!

Rather we rested Payne, he's too valuable for this tin-pot trophy.

Dominated possession and chances first half but find ourselves behind at home yet again.

Nervy way to get the result we deserved, but I'll take that happily. Tbh, quite a good game for this competition, but Tovide won't be happy. Two very presentable chances to score, missed both, and as soon as Mbick and Lisbie came on the difference was obvious.

According to the commentary, we're definitely through now given the remaining fixtures, so just home side advantage to play for (and three wins out of three in the 1st round qualifiers).

Is it too early for the W word?

If one looks at the BBC statistics, most mirror Saturdays exceptional performance versus Chesterfield. We might easily have scored six Sadly, lower were shots on target and goals scored. That reflects Samson Tovide’s loss of confidence and form. He missed a sitter from two yards and we’ll never sell him , especially now Bloomfield has gone from Luton. We looked a different side after HT when MBick, Lisbie and Anderson joined the fray.

The U’s were utterly dominant against a group of thugs. At HT I predicted a sending off was inevitable. However, we were then losing 0-1 after a well taken goal, and an unwanted regular statistic, every opposition shot on target goes in our net. Gillingham’s Sam Vokes remains a class act in scoring positions, but fortunately no longer has the pace, but we were fortunate as the Gills twice hit a post.

Lisbie added a further nought to his valuation. I suspect Cowling will cash in come the winter transfer window. It’s years since we have had a winger with similar pace.

Youngsters Kuffour and Harvey impressed, but Powell looked a tad vulnerable and Hunt was defensively exposed on occasion, possibly because Edwards doesn’t put in a defensive shift. A joy is that the Cowleys now know their best starting XI, albeit eight or nine didn’t start last night.

Nice feeling walking home. Really looking forward to Grimsby away in daylight and not on a murky Tuesday. .

Fringe players on a run out, never enhanced their positions for first XI places .
DC has found his best forward line, midfield picks itself, just the defence looks vulnerable with seniors missing.
Special mention to Harvey who showed high energy levels, and got more confident has the game progressed.

Samson’s confidence is definitely shot right now, and it’ll be a tough road to get it back, particularly as his chances to do so will be from the bench for a while to come. I feel for the lad, but sadly there are already those who claim to support Colchester United showering him with mindless toxic abuse in the social media cesspool.

Spot on Wessex. Confidence is massive in sport and his isn't going to be restored by his own fans getting on his back. Was really hoping he'd get a goal last night as he needs one. People seemed to have quickly forgotten his performances against Swindon and Port Vale last season. I think we rushed him back at his detriment and he hasn't looked the same player since.

I can't help feeling that he needs to be playing for a different manager, possibly a loan if our other forwards all get 100%.

I don't know what DC asks of him, but it's not getting the best out of him, that we know he is capable of.

It can't be easy having had a money-earning opportunity turned down as a result of a medical and he must be feeling he has no real future in football. He needs emotional support off the pitch to help him come to terms with things.

I can't imagine any manager being more supportive than Danny Cowley. This season alone he's heaped praise on Samson Tovide, both as a player and a young man several times in interviews.

The big transfer falling through must have been a disappointment but I'm sure the Cowleys will be doing everything to reassure him another opportunity for a big move will come.

It's not a question of being supportive, or not. The Cowleys approach to football encourages the worst in Samson. DC seems to revel in Samson wrestling with defenders, winding them up. That might be good for the team, but it's not good for Samson.

A different manager, a different approach to football, could bring out the best in him, It's not working for him under DC and all of DC's constant BS and blowing smoke up his rear isn't going to change that. A change of scenery and a bit of luck in front of goal could soon kickstart his career. Being DC's leading shithousery merchant will destroy it.

I don't buy the fact a transfer fell through as an excuse, OK maybe for a week or so at the most. Anytime anybody has tried to knock me back in life has just make me more determined to succeed. There's nothing like scoring goals for proving a point, but week-in week-out DC sends him out and he spends the game winding up defenders.

Also, I don't buy the 'he's only young' codswallop either, he's not some sulky 14 year old, he's 21 and his career will be over before he knows it.

A fair assessment. I think Lyle was good for him last season, but to make it you need to be able to play well with the current squad. He was also dire on Saturday. Though, to be fair, I think he has slightly reduced the histrionics. He looks heavier and slower. That said, we pulled the game out of the fire, which gives some optimism for Grimsby.

I haven't seen, or want to see, the crap on so called social media. But criticism (not abuse) is fair play for professional sportsmen
