Brilliant penalty save from Kelleher facing Ronaldo. Saved with his foot as he dived to the side with shot put down the centre. Let’s hope Ireland can hold out. Jimmy still on the bench.

Lost 1-0 to an added time goal. Jimmy didn’t get on.

The dentist deserves the sack, as resolute as they were for 90+ minutes. Not a great side obviously but better than San Marino tactics.

Very cruel . Spirited and disciplined performance from the Irish.

Unfortunately I can’t help but think, with Infantino in charge and as utterly bent and corrupt as he and his predecessor is and was , that the officials in a game like this (UEFA of course but all under the FIFA umbrella) are completely complicit in aiding completely in that notion.
Referee was an absolute disgrace and Shay Given said so live on Irish tv.

Good for him.

It was a heartbreaking defeat. The performance reminded of the 0-0 with Russia when Richard Dunne repelled all single-handedly (or so it seemed). Weirdly though, the result might give their (very slim) hopes of qualification a boost. 2 points dropped by Portugal would be more damaging than the benefit of 1 point gained by us, as it would almost guarantee Portugal and Hungary first and second. Now if we accept that Portugal are home and hosed, we can focus on beating Hungary to 2nd place. Of course the whole effort becomes academic if we cant beat Armenia on Tuesday.

I enjoyed the game too. I thought Ryan Manning played well and with some better management could have brought more offense on that side of the pitch.

Nail on head there Loft1979 how can you possibly win a game with zero/1 shot on target and your young striker up against top International experienced defenders pretty shocking managment IMO.
Ruben Diaz sent more through balls in the attacking half in this game than he has done in his entire Man City career that tells you their domination.
Ireland blew their chance in their first 2 games and have almost no chance now it looks like.
Shocking poor ref though gave everything to Portugal which is no surpiuse with Bruno hanging around its his best attribute nowadays

Think it was all about re-establishing credibility after the Armenia debacle, rather than trying to win the game, tbh.

Looking forward to NI v Germany. Without Bradley it’s even more unlikely but the atmosphere should be phenomenal. Great experience for Smyth and hopefully he at least gets on.
