From the stories that circulated last week it sounded like she was dying but it's still very sad news. A genius singer, a brilliant pianist and a more than okay songwriter, she could do it all. If you only listen to one Aretha album, make it the absolutely sublime Atlantic Records debut 'I Never Loved A Man The Way I Loved You'. Truly faultless from start to finish although all her 60s Atlantic output is superb.
From the 'Lady Soul' album from '68 which she co-wrote with then husband Ted White:
What a beautiful voice she had, she always seemed to sing so effortlessly and natural be it gospel or blues truly a 'one off' She'll be sorely missed. RIP.
My Father had a profound influence on me, he was a lunatic.

Yep a great voice. Loads of classic music.
This was remixed a few years back and is superb.
Its become a Caister Soul Weekend anthem in recent years
What a wonderful sound with lyrics and music from Bacharach and David. Many years ago there was a history of pop on BBC2 which said that pop represented a synthesis of the black religious sound, Jewish urban sensibility and white country music.
Hal David had a fantastic ear for everyday phrases that he incorporated into his lyrics.
Sang at Martin Luther King's funeral and Obama's inugeration, at the cutting edge of civil rights in America and simply the greatest singing voice in popular music. RIP Aretha xx
Wanted to post this. Aretha just kept her voice and her delivery and attitude through the years. She was 73 years when she performed this on stage at the Kennedy Center for Carol King in 2015. I know that this has been circulated before - but just please watch and listen to this. The Queen of Soul. What a voice ! RIP Lady.
Was going to post the very same performance. Just beautiful. This quote from Billy Preston says it all.

I can think of no more appropriate arena to pay tribute to the life of Aretha Franklin than the Loft For Words message forum. I know you'll be reading this in heaven Aretha!
