Swansea City v Preston North End : Matchday Thread 21/22 AFTERMATH 09:57 - Jan 17 with 13074 viewsNotLoyal

Here it is the matchday thread in front of people at last, where people normally go when these games take place with no people is anyone’s guess. To the toilet ? British Home Stores ? C&A ? Debenhams? Dereks Records? It’s all here the game against Prestonpans is here.

Joshua Smith, nee tree, will be the referee when Swansea City host Preston. The Bedfordshire official is taking charge of the Swans for just the third time, having had the whistle for the home meeting with Stoke and the trip to take on Fulham earlier in the season. So it was his fault then. Smith began refereeing in the EFL during the 2019-20 season, and was promoted to Championship duties last term.He will be assisted by Sam Lewis and Jonathan Hunt, nee 😂 while Leigh Doughty is the fourth official.

People called Preston

Preston Robert Tisch (April 29, 1926 — November 15, 2005) was an American businessman who was the chairman and–along with his brother Laurence Tisch–was part owner of the Loews Corporation. From 1991 until his death, Tisch owned 50% of the New York Giants football team and shared ownership of the team with Wellington Mara. Preston is dead now like a lot of people are, his brother Lawrence has a name on his house where he just lays around. You can only get in with a skeleton key.

Preston’s brother lives behind this plaque

Preston the bloke called Preston : Age 40, His name is Sam. Non descript nonsense singer called Preston was in the ordinary boys, who were a band apparently. He fell off a balcony once and found out anyone who goes on big brother is a complete and utter knob ( male and female) Lived in America, he has done nothing for years, has a fork lift licence, and if he hasn't he should have. Preston isn’t dead but will be one day.

Preston when he had a guitar

Listen if you not got players running off the ball into space how fan he make the pass remember the pass is only as good as the runner making it if you not got that you not got the pass

Well he’s not going to see their runs if he’s facing our goal is he????? As effective as a blinkered snail

Today Wolf reminded me of Celina having a poor game. Fell over too easily all the time, made some poor choices with his passing.
But I can't judge him on half a game.
Let's hope he can step up to the plate.

He’s been out for a long time injured. First game in a different country. I thought he did just fine just needs match fitness.

I can see what he’s saying but he’s applying no context. Wolf made a very telling tackle for us on the edge of our area - I can’t remember Celina doing so. Also pulled a defender wide for Manning to have his pop at goal

All about opinions in it, my opinion is that 90% of virtually every game grimes has got his back to the oppositions goal, can't you see that, or don't you want to see it?
I'm a fair minded supporter and will criticize anyone of them and praise them as and when, your quip in calling Downes the beloved one is a bit crass don't you think ?

Not saying Grimes isn't a decent player, but I'm notsure he's suited to the game Martin wants to play, he seems to want to keep the ball yes, but also wants to move the ball quicker and forward.

Downes always looks to go forward he passes forward when its on and drives forward to receive the ball, he's a player beyond his years that much is clear. he's 23 Grimes is virtually 27 nobody wanted him on the summer, lets see how many want Downs in the summer or in the next yrs.
[Post edited 22 Jan 2022 23:58]

"Downes always looks to go forward"

I don't see this. He's as guilty as anyone in the team of passing sideways and backwards too much. In some games it's been frustrating watching him shuffle the ball sideways and invite Naughton to play the midfield role for him. Other games he's taken by the scruff and driven us forward with his ability, much like Grimes did after coming on in the cup.

It's a daft old commentator cliche anyway. Good players, clever players, don't "look to go forward" at every opportunity. Moving the ball side to side is how the top teams play football. You wait for openings, and go backwards if the picture isn't right. The winger who "always wants to beat his man" gets subbed when they lose the ball running into brick walls. Sometimes forward is the wrong option. Grimes and Downes are doing what they're told by the manager. He wants technical players in our backline because the expectation is they will receive a lot of passes from midfield. It's not just about "quicker and forward".

Grimes does have issues turning away from chances to play the progressive ball now and then, and when he's seen as our main creative player who has the most possession in a game (over 10% today, 122 touches, narrowly edging Downes' 105) that's bound to draw reactions, but this forum goes seriously overboard in hammering him for it. "90% of every game Grimes has his back to the oppositions goal" case in point. Grimes played more key passes, more longer passes than Downes. Downes had a higher success rate with his safer, shorter passing. And one successful dribble.

People seem to see what they want to see. Reality is they're two good players doing a fairly similar job in a possession-based side, but to read what's posted on here you'd think we've got a terrible negative captain dragging the side down, and young Superman carrying us on his back.

I would just like to add for those who were not able to be at the ground yesterday. There was a general feeling of optimism before the game, even after our poor run, with supporters feeling things were going in the right direction. Plus after the game the affection and rapport between RM and the supporters was incredible. Do not think for one minute supporter patience is waning, in fact it seems the opposite. This was my observation, possibly others will see it differently.

Most fans that go to games are optimistic about things and believe what Martin is doing..there are a few about but very few and far between.

I find the negative ones are just using it as a bit of steam to let out because of other issues in their life, try telling them that and they are quick to defend themselves and tell you that they are wrong.

Football is a lot more about just winning and being successful, it's nice but even after a while that can get boring. All of us who support this club know the ride that goes with it and let's be fair.... Who of us would change it!?

This is a transition season like it or lump it, understand it or not but the powers who be who are running it and leading it will tell you the same, it's a transition season.

Your second paragraph is painfully wide of the mark.

You can be having a wonderful life but still be seething at matters at your club. Many Derby fans will evidence this and you can throw in many clubs that have fallen into oblivion.

Let us know when you say the transition is complete.

How far along that transitional continuum are we right now ? 10% / 90% ?

- playing style
- players / positions

Could be an interesting discussion point.

There it is the T word again...guess what next season will also be a transition season most seasons are as personnel change

already we have 2 loanees in Wolf and Chritie who look like they will add value and can bring what Martin wants to the team...it is hinted on here a third loan may well too be on the cards.
So what happens next season when Wolf and Christie move on along possibility with Piroe,Ntcham and Downes moving on
By the way all is good in my life so my "negativity " posted on here is down to the negatives I see in the club
Delighted to get a win yesterday found the first half a struggle as did most around me....
A win is a win but we failed to go on and dominate or score again....
I saw some good things Christie huge improvement on Laird...Wolf looks good and this back 3 looked solid

As long as I can remember we have had loans, we always will. I don't find it an issue. As for Piroe, Ntcham and Downes moving on. Nthcham is on a 3 year deal and will not go unless we get what we want for him. Piroe is a long way from the finished product and not currently clinical enough to play higher and again our price will have to be met. If Downes continues his form or gets better, he's the one I worry about.

Downes, whose role is more of a link between CBs and midfield / wing backs looks to keep possession and to go forward but players in front are not moving for a pass. In the past defenders have been tarred with the same brush. OK some fans want every pass to go forward and in the 4th division that works but higher up the leagues it rarely does. We were quick in attack yesterday when players forward of the ball created spaces.
The most negative player for me was Grimes. Either the player Is slow in thought or doesn't look ahead of him. Yesterday was a prime example. In the second half, in front of us, Manning, and Wolf had acres of space to run into or work with but Grimes passed to an overcrowded area of the pitch. The result was Chritie didn't get the space he had in the first half because our captain was so predictable.
Looking at independent player assessments it would appear Grimes was not up to the standard of those around him.

I thought...

Positives;

- Christie looked a much better footballer than Ethan Laird

- Cabango won his aerial battles and defends well in general (his first touch is no good mind, but that's ok if we play him CB in a 4)

- Naughton was sure footed, got a yard in his head on most

- Manning had a barnstormer

- Downes and Grimes played well and we look solid in CM, they are both consistent performers

- Korey Smith always puts in a proper shift and is a good player (not his fault he is being played out of position - his limitations mean he can't be a really effective Attacking Midfielder

- Piroe is an excellent all round centre-forward at this level, even when he doesn't score he wins his battles 1 on 1, holds the ball up and links up with midfield.

- Hamer was solid, as we have come to expect.

- I liked the look of Joseph, he is raw and made some basic errors...BUT, I loved his energy and pace and competitiveness. A proper nuisance. He can be improved and he can be useful, he looks a confident lad, if we gave him a run (off the bench) my instinct is that he will start chipping in with goals.

I liked the look of Wolff. It's interesting that some compared him to Celina because I made the same comment to my boy, but I meant that as a good thing (Celina was a good footballer whose confidence we destroyed imo).
It's hard to make a judgement based on someone's first 45mins in the Championship but he looked like a player with good skill levels to me, a player who is ambitious to go forward (his first thought appeared to be a creative attacking thought - I can't remember the incident now but there was one occasion where he would have created a goal scoring chance if the player he was attempting to link up with had been on his wavelength...that's the stuff that is likely to come however.
He made a good impression on me.

Negatives:

- We didn't take the game to Preston. It was Manning's screamer that gave the boys some confidence and got them playing with some swagger...it forced Preston to stop sitting in and allowed our midfield/attack/wing-backs to find some space.

- It's still square pegs in round holes; Smith at AM (then RWB for the finish), Latibeaudiere at LWB, Manning at CB (instead of LWB)

- Latibeaudiere can't play LWB and Russell Martin is determined that Manning will play LCB...we need to bring in a LWB (it is crazy that we have let Bidwell go in these circumstances without a replacement good to go)

- Ntcham didn't take his chance to show us that he can replace Patterson, has ability, still not up to full speed (makes me worry that his injuries have done for him at this level)

- Smith at AM is not going to create chances and he doesn't have the pace to get in either. I like him at DM though, he is a good DM at this level (I like Smith in general, he plays like he gives a shiit).

- Wolff and Christie are on loan, if we don't sign them this summer we have wasted game time on them (if we looked like a side that had a chance of going up that would be different...short term loans to help push us over the top is a good idea, spending money on loans to keep us up just delays us addressing the problem)

Overall conclusion...
I still think we should be playing 4-3-3 but let me offer this suggestion as a tweak to Martin's formation that would improve us...

--------------------------- Hamer / Fisher -------------------------------
------------------------- Cabango / Bennett ----------------------------
------ Latibeaudiere ----------------------------- Naughton ----------
-------------------------------- Smith ---------------------------------------
Christie-------- Downes ------------- Grimes ------------- Manning
-------------------------------- Wolff ---------------------------------------
-------------------------------- Piroe ---------------------------------------

Subs: Hamer/Fisher, Cabango/Bennett, Fulton, Walsh, Ntcham, Obafemi & Joseph

"It's what people know about themselves inside that makes them afraid" - "In a time of universal deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary act" - "The further a society drifts from truth the more it will hate those who speak it"

Swansea Indepenent Poster Of The Year 2021. Dr P / Mart66 / Roathie / Parlay / E20/ Duffle was 2nd, but he is deluded and thinks in his little twisted brain that he won. Poor sod. We let him win this year, as he has cried for a whole year. His 14 usernames, bless his cotton socks.

I thought...

Positives;

Decent post that.

Latibeaudiere, is a defender by trade and that shows at wing back, he plays deep and defends, which leaves him short when he needs to attack, he lacks the pace to do the job, but works hard in trying, he's a decent player overall.
