The Senedd is a government body elected by Welsh individuals and is answerable to the electorate not shareholders as in the case with NATS HOLDINGS LTD. There is absolutely no comparison. |
48% owned by the HM government or in other words you and me the TAXPAYER. Bristol are playing a blinder. Tapping up the taxpayer and the crying foul over Cardiff. It is a PR battle. NATS invest in Bristol backed by £192 m HMG while the Senedd GIFTS a £200m SUBSIDY. The Senedd is Inc vesting in freight service and maintenance services as well so as not to complete directly. Port Talbot / Scunthorpe comes to mind. That momey was too much. This is not.

Where does taxpayer money stop, do we subsidise every firm? 300 jobs to go at Dow Chemicals in Barry. Why is it just steel that gets the attention Many industries have gone in this area in recent times. BP Baglan, BP Llandarcy, no stepping in there despite big job losses

Airports have potential to make big profits where as steelworks and Petrochemicals make big profits in areas of cheap labour and lax environmental standards. London's are not rebelling at Heathrow expansion so much as it create clean k jobs and a good wage packet. I would not live there. Dow do not belong in Barry.

This will mean 48,000 extra holidays available and another 2 to 3 flights a day during peak holiday season.

We have de industrialised as a country. Steel and petro works made big profits and paid well in the past. Unfortunately, it's a question of the market dictating unless we nationalise Why doesn't Dow belong in Barry? The site has been there in one form or other for decades and has a very good safety record.

Not sure the people of Wales ever elected a ‘Dave Lees’ to speak on welsh issues. Why would anyone in Wales give a toss about his oplnion’s…?

Because Bristol is doing 10X the business of Cardiff and they could learn something. Then again if they are like you and ignore basic facts no wonder the airport loses so much money.

Because it shows how much money this Welsh governments is wasting on the airport, don't get me wrong I use Cardiff but it's hard to justify the amounts being lavished on it.

Imagine how you would feel living in North Wales. Neglected essential services and money wasted on an airport it is not practical to use.

Just came back from Tenerife after leaving from Scumdiff International Airport. Visited their one and only shop WH Smith, a small bottle of 7 up £4.19. Pint of Larger in the bar area £8, with hardly anyone in there. (No wonder!) The previous Spanish owners knew exactly what they were doing, in running it down, so that you and me would bail it out with our taxes ! !

If he runs a successful airport nearby then we should learn from him. There's a problem in local politics in that they compete rather than learn. It's stupid thinking, 100s of local organisations doing the same work and they don't learn from eachother. I've worked in public and private sector organisations and there were way more benchmarking forums etc. in the private sector.

Yes agree the facilities there are poor and the prices they charge for food and drink are scandalous, flew from Bristol in March and paid just over £6 a pint, £8 is a total rip off

You are Donald J Trump and i claim my £10. Let me say this slowly so you might be able to understand a little …. 1. Dave Lees is not trying to advise Welsh Govt on how to run a successful airport. Fact. 2. Dave Lees runs Bristol and sees Cardiff as his direct competition. He is trying to put public pressure the opposition. Fact. 3. Read up this thread to see how the tax payer is assisting Bristol airport. You might want to get back to thinking about Tariffs cos airports are defo not for you. [Post edited 5 May 11:48]

When Cardiff get a low cost carrier full time, and Jet 2 they will be able to compete, until then Cardiff will always be a backwater. In 2024 over 10 million passengers used Bristol it's the fastest growing airport in the UK, just for comparison 837,000 used Cardiff. To say Cardiff is direct competition is really stretching it

Thanks for the reply. The obvious question is why would the seemingly successful Dave Lees waste his precious time writting to Welsh Govt if it was not an important matter for him ? I guess i think both could be successful and that should offer the passengers a healthy choice. I always use Cardiff when i can, but have used Bristol if needs must.

I am not an account xpert in petrochemicals but these sort of works in my opinion should be e not located in residential areas like they are in Barry. Id not know the details of the risk to human health but w they do seem to have towers pushing out effluents. Hopefully is in only steam. Doe are owners of Union Carbide who you nay have heard of. I need to research it more. Ineos would not be like this and would have been located on an out of town industrial estate.

About 500 metres from homes in Waterton a mile from Treoes & Coychurch much closer than Dow Corning is to homes in Barry.

The last time I read up on this it was stated that Bristol airport had 9.6 million passengers that particular year. The article stated that the airport was at capacity and was unable to expand. This was last year sometime so they may have somehow acquired more land in the meantime. But I seem to remember that acquiring land for expansion was not possible for some reason So it may have been the fastest growing airport but can't grow any more. Meanwhile Cardiff could expand enormously - potentially.

Cardiff airport doesn't need to expand, its running so far below current capacity it's unbelievable. Most of the time the airport is deserted. It needs to increase capacity but that is the challenge, because popular budget airlines do not seem to see Cardiff as a viable option.

Cardiff can expand as much as it likes, but until they can attract customers it's pointless, they still attract far less than a million per year. As I said earlier they need low cost carriers based there, I use it when I can

Both good points. I shouldn't have said expand. I should have said, if Bristol is unable to take more passengers then Cardiff should be an alternative as it has plenty of capacity to take more passengers. A low cost airline would be brilliant.
