I'm not against nationalising steel manufacturing in this country. In my opinion it should also have been done in Port Talbot and would have if the Welsh Government had pushed harder instead of being obsessed with the environment. |  | | |

Couldn't agree more, Port Talbot blast furnaces produced the finest steel which is now imported to be rolled, a criminal waste to lose them.
And this electric arc furnace which is being built is only going to use scrap steel, not produce virgin steel, we have lost that capability for ever.

As I understand things, it would still be possible to add a DRI (directly-reduced iron) plant as a front end to the EAF at Port Talbot. From what I have read, an EAF is a less optimal than a purpose-designed furnace to complement DRI, but that seems to be what Tata is building at its Dutch plant. If the will and finance were there, that could still be done at Port Talbot. Admittedly past experience does not fill one with any confidence that this will come onto the agenda. | | | |

Will they vote, possibly as a novelty, but it will be a case just turning up and putting an X anywhere, then questioning why they can't do it on their phone. | | | |

The UK is assisting Indians TATA Steel and sharing the PT investment costs as I understand it. The Chinese were subsiding UK workers in Scunthorpe as they were reportedly losing a fortune.
Take a look at the mess in Merthyr for British Coal. We do not need the filthy stuff to produce energy. It has been replaced d by wind Solar gas and nuclear.
I doubt UK imports coal from Japan. I need to check that one.
Who shut down North sea gas ? When did the Government do that then? Tax incentives were given to keep it open and tidy up the old rigs. There are thousands of old discarded oil rigs in the gulf of Mexico. There are few if any nice tourist resorts on
the south coast of USA. I wonder why?
The people of Port Talbot can now breath clean air. The old boys are happy with a pay off and the younger one have a more secure future due to Indians investing in Wales.( With Taxpayer incentives). Westminster baled out the banks in 2009 remember and that cost a whole lot more. The City of London had to be saved from a total banking collapse.
UK is no longer a global heavy industry powerhouse. The money and expertise is with Indians and Chinese it seems.
China has been providing cheap clothing and electronics and knock down prices for two decades now switched to Vietnam.
China and India will subsidise UK steelworkers for another decade or two. This investment is out of the league of UK banks and management buyouts seen in other businesses.
UK Governments cannot run Steelworks. Some insiders on here will remember the grossly overstaffed works in the old days presumably in British Steel
The coking coal is needed to keep the furnaces working and a ship arrived from Japan. Where this treated coal came from before is not stated. I once visited the coking plant at Port Talbot 20 years ago the guy showing us around could barely breath. I felt so sorry for him. You do not need those works near your house and young family for sure.

The price of steel will follow this trend once we get to the point of having to import virgin steel and not have the capability to produce our own.

I believe the voter a has been seduced by the "we will cut red tape for businesses".
The gas privatisation was a roaring success. The authorities have not regulated the water authorities well at all . Lax rules have led to sharp practices and failure to invest properly.
In Victorian times sewage developments were a vote winner because the the desperate living conditions. Now people only want to talk about their bills. In order to modernise consumers have to pay more and the Water authorities rigourously regulated.
