Off-season Business 13:25 - Apr 19 with 8328 views | DylanP | With this season winding down and is mathematically safe and also mathematically incapable of reaching the Play Offs, the mind naturally wanders to what are the absolute musts this off-season. I'll start: 1. Sign Marti up for the rest of the decade 2. Sign Jimmy Dunne up for the rest of the century 3. Sign Ronnie Edwards on a permanent deal 4. Sign two of the following three (minimum) on permanent deal: Yang, Dembele, and Saito 5 Bring Charlie Kelman back from Leiyton Orient to challenge Frey up front, get rid of Celar What else?

Off-season Business on 15:00 - Apr 19 with 4435 views | derbyhoop | If not already done, Marti and Nourry have to decide who they want to keep, who can they let go, and what gaps that would leave. For those they want to keep and are out of contract, they can be 2-3 weeks ahead of most other clubs in the division and get the offers on the table now. For me the key ones are Cook, Dunne and Frey. If we can keep all 3, then we'll be in a fairly strong position well ahead of next season. However, I believe Cook and Frey are big earners and we will need to give JD a decent deal to ward off interest. I don't think we should look to keep Fox, Andersen nor Colback. Fox could be a decent squad player but he"s not going to get us to top 6. Andersen, despite yesterday, hasn't looked anywhere near last season's level. Colback will be 36 next season. Paal will also go, but we already have replacements in Larkeche, Vale and Esquerdinha. Allegedly we also have Pearman, from Perth Glory and Akindileni, from Aberdeen, lined up. If we can't keep Dunne, we will need a RB. Midfield seems well covered, but a physical presence, not you Madsen, should be added to the midgets. If we're only going to play with 1 up front then Frey, Celar, Kolli, Kelman and Lloyd are more than enough. In fact, it wouldn't be a huge risk, despite all the injuries this year, to let one of them go. Sell Celar or let LLoyd go out on loan? I certainly don't see wholesale change like last Summer. Provided we get the contract business done early. I think we have the basis of a solid top 10 side, but could go better, with better availability.

I thought we had the basis of a solid top ten side this season. So I'd also consider 'robustness' when scouring the available players list.

True. But Madsen has shown signs of learning how to tackle. Morrison, Dembele, Saito, Varane and Bennie all have a season of Championship football under their belts, so ought to cope better next season.

Off-season Business on 16:07 - Apr 19 with 4162 views | dmm | Will we keep hold of Frey? I believe his contract expires this summer but there's a club option for a further year. There are pros and cons to retaining Frey and a decision will need to be made keeping in mind Celar, Kelman, Kolli and Lloyd are also in the frame for the lone striker spot. Personally, I'd prefer Frey to be released and replaced with a similar type of striker with no injury issues. Celar and Kelman to compete for the striker spot. Lloyd to go out on a season long loan. Kolli to be used more as an attacking wide player.

As always it depends on wages. He's hardly stayed anywhere for more than a year. It might suit him to have some continuity. Eight goals in 26 matches is decent if not spectacular. I'd like to keep him for his physicality, experience and attitude at the right price. Also so we're not changing too many players at once.

The question is whether we could get a similar type of striker with no injury issues for the same as what we'd be paying Frey. You'd imagine someone who offers what he does and is always available is going to cost a lot more.
Off-season Business on 17:06 - Apr 19 with 3868 views | stevec | Celar’s one attribute was running in behind defenders and five months out with a hamstring injury suggests he may not be able to do that on his return. Willock mark II I suspect. Frey is a decent CF and can finish but in the 15 months he’s been here he cannot keep fit for anything more than very short periods. Kolli could be handy if we play 2 up front, that needs to happen. Lloyd needs a loan out, Orient maybe! Kelman been utterly hopeless in our shirt but needs to be given one more chance. Need one fit experienced CF to come in with Kolli/Kelman/Frey as fall back. Unload Celar and probably Lloyd. Keep Colback, plenty of midfielders to choose from so fully covered there. Full backs situation a bit up in the air at the moment, if we can sort that out and fashion a midfield to accommodate two up front we might have a team to reckon with.

I agree, he is a full blown international with a non Micky Mouse country, I think will come good with all the extra competition ( Kolli, Kelman et al) meaning not everything is concentrated on him. That’s assuming the rest aren’t all injured at the same time. Personally I don’t think we need wholesale changes and if Jimmy stayed we could have a strange situation where all we actually need is a CB. Vale is already a new signing, if Saito stays that is a new signing. Right Back is the problem even if Jimmy stays as no cover to speak of, unless Heverton has a miracle turnaround. Be good to see how Larkeche has developed. Which makes me think overal we are in the best position we have been in for years. Oh and if we could replace 36 year old Colback with 29 year old Hayden that would be a class move [Post edited 19 Apr 17:27]

Looking through our team I want us to keep and sign the following where relevant Nardi JCS Morrison Cook (sign him up for 1 more season) Edward’s ( throw some money at him as will be worth more in future) Paal Dunne Signing x 2 (Need two new full backs to cover Paal and Dunne) Colback (sign him up for 2 more seasons) Field Saito (sign him up for 4 seasons) Chair Dembele Varane Morgan (hope he gets back some form) Frey Vale (think we signed him and should be available) Kolli Celar (want him to be given another shot) Kelman (let’s give him his deserved shot) Yang (if interested sign him up but unlikely Smyth (but he still isn’t producing enough to start) New keeper needed Get rid of Madsen (not quite sure up to it) Lloyd (seems ok but to raw) Ashby (couple of ok performances recently but not worth it for me) Anderson (thanks for memories but wasn’t as effective this season) Bennie (hasn’t quite shown what he can do) Fox (he has done better this season than I thought he would but to push on - he has to go!)

You can't just get rid of Madsen and Bennie. They have contracts that run beyond June 2025. Madsen has, in recent games, shown why we signed him. Bennie was originally signed for DS and gas contributed when given the chance

Forget about Edward’s it’s just not going to happen. Why would he sign for us even if we could afford him (we can’t) when Saints are likely to be challenging next year whereas we’re likely to be mid table at best again.

Get rid of Bennie as he hasn’t shown what he can do. Sign Colback for two more seasons. Wow. So giving up on a teenager signed for the development squad less that a year ago less than a week after his 19th birthday but give Colback a contract until just short of his 38th birthday. Quite extraordinary.
Off-season Business on 20:19 - Apr 19 with 3347 views | VancouverHoop | The devil you know is, very frequently, a more logical choice than the devil you don't. So the fewer changes the better. We'll need a new right back though. Also a younger, but similar type, sub for Colback. Kelman should be given every chance to play up front. Maybe send Lloyd and Bennie on loan to Orient along with a thank you note and a box of chocolates. Every effort should be made to sign Saito to a permanent deal. Also there aren't many player-coaches around these days but Andersen might be a decent shout in that role. Otherwise, just make sure Marti has no excuse to up sticks. Pretty please!

And if Cook re-signs... And if Larkeche is earmarked as starting left back (with cover from JCS, Fox, Vale, Esquardinha if ready)... Then, sad as it is to lose Saito and Edwards... We only really _need_ replacements for Dunne, Ashby, and Colback. i.e., a starting right back, a starting central midfielder, and a backup rightback. Obvious areas for upgrade would be left back and centre forward, but I think we'd have to ship a striker out to get another in. And even if we don't probably best to get Lloyd a loan. So perhaps not as much business required as some summers. That would leave us with GK: NARDI, Walsh, Cooper (with Sheppard allowing one of Walsh or Cooper to get a good loan) RB: NEW, New LB: LARKECHE, Esquardinha CB: MORRISON, COOK, Clark-Salter, Fox CM: FIELD, VARANE, NEW, Madsen, Morgan AM: CHAIR, VALE, Dembele, Smyth, Kolli, Bennie, Pearman S: KELMAN, Frey, Celar

Agreed...7th choice winger might expect a few bench appearances but would mainly be playing in the dev squad. Think he's 19 though, if that makes a difference, and 4 goals and 3 assists in 10 games for a crap team are good numbers.

Jack is 6th in the squad for points per game (1.38), and a -2 goal difference, having played 31% of squad minutes, apparently. Interestingly Morgan Fox, 4 years younger, has played 6 minutes more than Jack, with 1.52 points per game and a +1 gd. https://fbref.com/en/squads/a757999c/Queens-Park-Rangers-Stats [Post edited 19 Apr 21:59]
