Off-season Business 13:25 - Apr 19 with 9036 viewsDylanP

With this season winding down and is mathematically safe and also mathematically incapable of reaching the Play Offs, the mind naturally wanders to what are the absolute musts this off-season. I'll start:

1. Sign Marti up for the rest of the decade

2. Sign Jimmy Dunne up for the rest of the century

3. Sign Ronnie Edwards on a permanent deal

4. Sign two of the following three (minimum) on permanent deal: Yang, Dembele, and Saito

5 Bring Charlie Kelman back from Leiyton Orient to challenge Frey up front, get rid of Celar

What else?

Get rid of Bennie as he hasn’t shown what he can do.

Sign Colback for two more seasons.

Wow.

So giving up on a teenager signed for the development squad less that a year ago less than a week after his 19th birthday but give Colback a contract until just short of his 38th birthday.

Quite extraordinary.

It’s his opinion.

Personally I’d get Bennie out on loan and 100% extend Colback for another year. And if he stays fit and has another good season then who knows?

Unfortunately most seasons at most clubs, there is a massive turnover of players.

When we played Bristol City, I think we would only have had Paul Smyth here when Nakhi Wells played here and Rob Dickie just add Jimmy Dunne and Sam Field and possibly Kenneth Paal, who Dickie played with at QPR.

For me, I would keep this entire squad.

Only ones potentially would move on myself would be Paal. Would also loan out Lloyd and Morgan and add a returning Charlie Kelman to the fold.

Think with a bit more luck with injuries that would be a definite top half squad and an outside chance of the playoffs

It won't happen though due to the nature of professional football as it is today...

So no call ups from the dev team then?

I don't think we'll see anyone from the DS establish themselves in the senior squad next season like Kieran Morgan, Rayan Kolli and Alfie Lloyd have. But I'm keeping my eye on Daniel Bennie, Alfie Tuck, Emerson Sutton and Esquerdinha who may get drafted in at some point.

Thank you!

I do feel like opinions get shot down quickly. I would like Bennie to come good and he scored a good goal for auz recently but haven’t seen much in hoops yet

As for colback - we look a much better team with him in - in my opinion

Jack is 6th in the squad for points per game (1.38), and a -2 goal difference, having played 31% of squad minutes, apparently.

Interestingly Morgan Fox, 4 years younger, has played 6 minutes more than Jack, with 1.52 points per game and a +1 gd.

Neither Fox nor Colback has been on the pitch for a third of our total playing time this season.

Despite all his injury problems Cook is in our top six for most minutes played.

Only Nardi (ever present), Dunne (rested for one game when that Blades move was being negotiated), and Field have played more than 75% of the league minutes that they could have played.

Fox and Colback are 15th and 16th in terms of most minutes played.

Only 8 players have been on the pitch for more than 50% of league minutes played:

- Nardi
- Dunne
- Field
- Smyth
- Paal
- Cook
- Varane
- Saito

It really is a squad game.

Colback at the right price is worth another 1 year.
Cook same
Anderson if he is cheap
Dunne I think you give him the extra year he wants to sign the contract.

Sign Saito

Yang I'm convinced is an 18 month loan

Strikers:

Frey, Kolli, Kelman, Yang

Celar if we can replace with pace and power I think I would want that option

Sign

Centre back (Edwards is either going back or going Prem)
2 x left back 1 x Right Back
1 x CM

Release Fox, Paal

Am I the only one on here that rates Paal?
Nearly always available, nearly always 6-7/10, didn’t quit when Beale left, a good, steady LB at this level.
I’d offer Cook (if it’s not already a done deal), Colback and Fox another year, we can’t keep these massive squad overhauls year in year out.

Paal's been okay cerainly and one of our only decent acquisitions from the Beale reign but a bit hot and cold to really feel desperate to keep him. But anyway he's been quite clear about not wanting to stay hasn't he?

Cook, Colback and Fox all depend on wages. They are all likely to be injured at their age so should accept that reflected in their pay. There is deffo a need for experienced Championship players in the squad but I think those players are far more likely to slot in quickly than young overseas players like we've had this season.

Paal might have been the only Beale player that did not quit but that was 2 years ago and Glory Days pass you by quickly and after this year I would ship him out if somebody was willing to take him.
Not sure how he gets 6 or 7 out of 10 when he has probably cost us more goals than the rest of that defense all together IMO.
Almost never blocks crosses, gets beaten for pace and height and his corners/frees are so bad they create more chances for the opposition on breakaways than us but he keeps on jogging across to grab the ball anyway.
Madsen delivers a curving inswinger with ease and Dembelle can do it also and we know Anderson always could but injuries and lack of consistancy has kept them out until now but they are all back thankfully .
KP did his best for QPR but its time for new blood

The problem with Paal going is who replaces him.

A lot of people were fine with Barbet going until several games into the next season when a Barbet shaped hole in defence was very apparent.

Or the oft-derided Jake Bidwell who has only once finished below QPR in the seven seasons since he left, and that was by one position.

Guess you could add Manning to that as well.

Well Larkeche is ours and has had a decent season at Dundee.
Vale (when fit) can play LB it seems, but maybe preferred higher up the pitch.
Esquerdinho may move up front the Dev Squad.

Admittedly Fox may depart, but that's 4 possibles.
If he does go, I'd look to bring in another.

Right Back is more of a concern for me with Dunne likely to leave and Ashby returning from his loan.

Wow. Totally respect your opinions guys, that’s what forums are all about.

But we have some players who are mid-/lower- division players at best, that are being hailed as players we should definitely keep for next season. I think Marti has done well to get a very good tune out of some of our squad. And yet some have been totally weak (Celar - two goals and definitely has promise? Can’t see it. Madsen - puts an effort in at the end of the season after being totally crap and disinterested all season? Come on, he’s not going to make it).

We’ll never see Edwards here next season - that’s a pipe dream. Fox, Cook and Colback are all getting on. Any possible player that is younger and equal/upgrade has to make sense (and be cheaper, surely, giving us cash space). Jimmy looks like he’s off.

Kolli’s a done OK. But is he really going to cut the mustard? I really hope he does, but something went on mid-season there. Lloyd? Hmmm cut below Kolli tbh. Kelman, has to be given a go now after the season he’s had. Frey? I don’t know, he’s something different when you need it but at what cost?

It’s not all rosy by any means. We are going to have to keep a bunch of the above next season, like it or not. It’s what we actually do with our limited options now. Top 10 is a hard task for us next season in my honest opinion. But I’d love to be bloody wrong and have a fun season.

Enjoying all your views and opinions though loyal Rrssss.

Shall we bring up the statistics again on our win ratio when colback plays?

IF Colback plays. Availability is the best ability. At 36 and counting Colback is unlikely to improve in this area.

I also think he's dependable and a good egg. However, it's irrelevant as he's running down his contract.

Paal, like it or not, is the best LB at the Club, by far......nobody gets close to him.

Not sure about all these other left sided defender type playerswe have signed but if they are as good as Paal, then that is good otherwise we should be talking to him about a new contract.

Well, he's the only left-back, isn't he? ;)

I've always liked him. I've seen a good few comments that he can coast through games, but I've never spotted it, tbh. I might be wrong, of course.

Yep, me too. I’ll never forget the last game of the season Hasselbaink was in charge when we had no idea that we were seeing Ale Faurlin and Clint Hill for the last time in the final home game and were deprived of the chance to really show our appreciation.
Realistically though, I guess we’re unlikely to find out until after the season’s over.

I normally steer clear of suggesting that we should bring back an ex Ranger, BUT if Jimmy Dunne is leaving, Darnell Furlong would be as close to a "like for like" signing as possible.

A right back, capable centre back, experienced at winning aerial balls in both areas (and on the right touchline!). And possesses a long throw!

Of course, I have no idea on his contract situation, or that we could meet his current wages. Or that the club would want a similar type of player!

Sadly, there's going to be a lot of work to do in the summer. I really hope we don't keep Ashby - it was notable that the Swansea fans were singing ee-aw chants at him yesterday. I generally like Paal but it looks like he'll be off and Jimmy is unlikely to re-sign, so that means two new full backs are a priority. In midfield, while Colback has done well recently, I don't understand the logic of releasing Hayden because he was too old and then re-signing someone even older who has missed a significant amount of the season through injury. We do need someone hard in there though - is Shaun Derry still available? Nearly ten years on from Charlie leaving, we still haven't replaced him. I like Frey but we can't have our main striker only able to play 40 minutes at a time. Hopefully Nourry won't sell two strikers and replace them with only one this time round.
