Where are the next generation of Uglies? 12:59 - May 9 with 2740 views | PatfromPoole | The thought occurred to me today of what this message board might look like in 20 or 30 years time. I would guess that the average age of contributors to this esteemed forum would be somewhere between 50 and 60. We of course so sadly no longer have the much-missed input of SFCReferee, who brought the average age down a fair bit. I am aware of two younger contributors, ShirtNumbers and Joiedevivre, both very fine young chaps who will doubtless have valuable contributions to make in future years, hopefully reflecting on happier times for our club. But are there any others?? This is I guess in part a recognition of the job Nick has done in allowing me to fall out with him about 10 times a year on here over the last couple of decades. Long may it continue.

Where are the next generation of Uglies? on 14:04 - May 9 with 2391 views | felly1 | Are fan forums generally dying out due to X and Crap Tok etc? Not really sure if the younger generation have much interest in this sort of thing..could be wrong though , maybe Nick remembers a time when more people came on here on posted their views.
Where are the next generation of Uglies? on 14:35 - May 9 with 2351 views | dixiefrog | Pat, in 20 to 30 years time I very much doubt that the younger generation will be interested in our message board, more importantly will they even have forums for non-league clubs like ours?

Where are the next generation of Uglies? on 14:37 - May 9 with 2344 views | Buggalugs | The football message board concept is a thing of the past and I'd be amazed if there was more than a handful of regular contributors on here under the age of 30, probably even 40. There's not a chance in hell my lad would post on a platform like this. I have to say, I do really miss the good old days of TUI. Unfortunately a lot of the humour and piss taking of the past has been replaced with boring currant affairs discussions, which I suppose backs up what old codgers we are. It used to be both hilarious and brutal on here, but it was a lot more light hearted and would proper make me belly laugh sometimes. Unfortunately, some people couldn't take it for what it was and from what Nick said at the time, it got close to getting shut down for good.

Where are the next generation of Uglies? on 21:04 - May 9 with 1998 views | kernow | How amazingly brilliant it was the first time you posted something and some complete stranger responded, in almost real time. 20 years later and it seems so old hat and passé. Time, tide and technology wait for no-one and I don’t imagine football forums will endure.

I just gave you a -1 because despite being a reasonably new contributor/ reader- I am old and shit with computers! I actually sought out returning to old school forums (motorbikes too) as the social media contents are driven by clicks- and attract moronic click bait - rarely much to do with going to the game. This will become less used I'm sure, but more cherished- like those few remaining video stores in the US that keep going! I also read the news pages more- its hard to find Saints content that's readable- so thank you And please do -1 me in tit for tat response.

Where are the next generation of Uglies? on 08:59 - May 10 with 1562 views | Heisenberg | The glory days have gone. There was a golden era where everyone who posted was an international businessman who bought a top of the range BMW every year and had at least 5 foreign holidays a year and owned an apartment in New York which they would fly to for a weekend away. All you can eat Chinese buffets were in vogue alongside dealing in rare antiques and dating exotic women from the far East. Like Saints things have declined. It’s now a couple of cheap beers down the Spoons and a kebab on the way home.

is the kebab mandatory, last one I had was in Inverness and should have been designated a WMD (Weapon of Mass Diarrhea).

Where are the next generation of Uglies? on 10:12 - May 10 with 1489 views | solent_toffee | Isn’t it kind of cool to have a place full of arl arses (no offence) where people talk about the game properly without all the false nine, inverted 6, xg 2-1 or whatever bollocks that the younger generation talk about when discussing football with great authority. I go the game with two nephews and I have no idea what they’re talking about half the time as they take all of their knowledge from the game of some clown from X or insta. There’s no culture around the younger generation’s involvement in the game, like most things I’m made up to be born when I was and grew up and lived when I did.

Couldn’t agree more. The Tik Tok crew completely bewilder me. God knows how they get enjoyment from that shite. And then there are the likes of Saint Rob. Man alive….

I completely disagree. I have no idea about social media but the public understanding of the game has improved enormously since we were young and that's a good thing. It's one of the few things that have improved. Back in the 70s and 80s pretty much everything in this country was based on 4-4-2 and long ball, alternatives were hardly even thought about. England and English teams were regularly overrun in midfield. I remember seeing international games on TV where pundits said things like "tactics don't matter, just put your 11 best players on the pitch". Now people have a lot better understanding of tactics and what different managers are trying to do. If people just want to sing a few songs and cheer some goals then that's ok. Each to their own, but for me, watching a game without understanding what's going on seems a bit like watching the Godfather trilogy just for the gunfights.

Contributing & reading the posts on this forum has been much more fun than watching the teams dire struggle this season. Keep those opinions coming.
Where are the next generation of Uglies? on 13:15 - May 11 with 709 views | ShirtNumbers | Thank you Pat for the comment! I too would be surprised if there were any other younger posters on here. Excluding Joiedevivre, there is only 1 other person I know who reads fan forums and that it my one of my Bournemouth supporting mates. He decided to get into them basically because I would read this site sometimes in Sixth Form. A lot of people have said that social media is taking over the forums. That is true, but as a young person, I often prefer the discourse on here just because people are usually a bit more honest. On social media there is the incentive of recognition and more significantly monetary gain. This leads to having people whose posts are only there to either line their own pockets, get them closer to the club or just get a bit of attention. You don't really get that on forums so I find them a much better place to interact with people. [Post edited 11 May 14:23]
