We all know the sort performance this team is capable of, there really is an opportunity to play with absolutely no fear. We've achieved target one of the three year plan a playoff spot so dare I say this is somewhat of a freehit. By that I mean the players should be relaxed and play with freedom. Anyway I'm going to try and get some sleep. Up The Dale.

JM has not had this type of selection headache for a while. The game itself could be dictated by Southend if they park the bus and look for opportunities to counter it could be turgid and slow. If they have a go it could be a cracker. Both teams have been defending well of late. I sense whoever wins the midfield battle will take the spoils, Gilmour could be key for us. To use the equine term I am a terrible box walker on these big games. For my own health I need us to win by two clear goals, but tbh I’ll suffer and take a crappy 1-0 win. I can’t be there tonight but I hope all the Dale fans have a great night and give plenty of vocal support. Good luck lads. UTD

Exactly this James. We need to be straight out of the blocks tonight. The Biffos had Halifax buried within 15 mins by going at them from the off & giving them no respite. Come on lads!!

I live in Southend and my nephew and brother in law are among those on the supporters coaches heading north. The family loyalties are split but it is definitely Dale’s turn to make some playoff progress. Have a safe journey Shrimper.

There's no free hit about tonight's game at all. We have two more chances to achieve the three year plan after these play offs. There's no guarantee we will achieve a play off spot in any of those, never mind win one. We have to treat tonight and any subsequent game as the most important in the clubs history if we are serious about returning to the EFL. Suggesting that a play off game is something of a free hit is a losers mentality but it's similar to listening to McNulty last night stating that the club/team are not yet properly ready for a return to EFL2, they haven't transformed, or something. Why would you even say that as a manager on the eve of a play off game? Somebody once said we weren't ready for the Championship after the club had been in existence for over 100 years. There's always a negative spin on why we CAN'T do something, an excuse. Of course the club are ready to win promotion in the next couple of weeks and so are this team. We now have a golden opportunity and we need to treat it like that. [Post edited 15 May 15:46]

Agreed. As much as I like East, we’re a better side without him. East and Gilmour together negates a lot of the good qualities of both. It’s no coincidence Gilmour’s been excellent since East got injured and our form has really picked up too. Gilmour Barlow Ayinde Bird Rodney

Hogan in place of EEL would have been my preference but he only returned from injury last week so i don't see it happening. EEL has done pretty well since he returned to be fair.

East might not be fit to last 90 mins yet, and needs to be quick in movement/passing. Ayinde is an energetic fellow and loves to get forward, ideal to breach the defence line. Can see him doing well tonight. McNulty " but the game isn't treated any differently from a regular league game".......sure? Any whispers about injuries?

If there’s a chance of promotion NOW no matter how slim then you have to go for it. No-one has any idea of the composition of the league in two or three years time. Could be full of “big clubs” from the EFL or vanity clubs with plenty of clout. Ask Gateshead, so close in the recent past yet who’s ship appears to have sailed. To say that you aren’t ready is to suggest that you don’t relish the opportunity.

Maybe free hit was the wrong phrase. But the players don't need to go out on the pitch tonight with the weight of 118 years on their shoulders.

Think that’s it, we just want them to go out and play as we know they can. The problem will be if Southend sit in.

My guess is the game plan against Spennymoor was based on our perceived superior fitness against a part time team.

No we played rubbish. Far too slow. That happens too. Best to focus on how well we played in the better performances whilst acknowledging how we struggle to deal with those who sit in. Not one thing has changed all season long. When we play with pace we are good, when we don’t we aren’t effective. That’s on the manager to sort by finding solutions, which, to his credit, he has with the visible shift in tactics - watch the keeper.
