Really bad decision making when it comes to subs has cost us tonight. McNulty has to acknowledge that and accept he got wrong.
Too many players impacted by one substitution. We were saying before the game that the worry was that he maybe had too many options. And so it came to pass.
All night long they looked like scoring from crosses and corners though, those out on the pitch didn’t do enough to stop them.
In 46 league games and one play off we’ve conceded 48 goals. A quarter of them in three home games. When push came to shove we haven’t had that steel and resilience to prevent this occurring. |  |

As a 30+ year Dale fan I'm steeled against results like this, but it never stops being painful. I'm sorry but it's time for a regime change. Jim's a lovely bloke etc. but we have thrown away two huge chances this season where we had a definitive advantage. It gets harder and harder each year to commit to a club that allow and accepts mediocrity. We need someone with a fire in their belly and a winning mentality. Jim Mcnulty just does not fit that bill. |  | | |

Fair play to Southend, never stopped believing and tactically outsmarted Jim.
As for us, a performance to perfectly sum up our season under McNulty.
Threw it away against Bromley in the FA cup, threw it away against Spennymoor in the FA Trophy, thew it away tonight. His substitutions are what killed us tonight. The minute we brought on an extra CB on 64 mins I knew there'd be trouble. Then we need an outlet up top to relieve some pressure, bringing Bird off for Mitchell is absolutely criminal.
Hopefully we don't have to see Kairo in a Dale shirt again, I'm absolutely sick of him and tonight epitomised why we don't want him as our number 9.
It's not what we've achieved in coming 4th, but the manner in which we've lost those important games. The most painful defeats ought to be the biggest learning curves, but despite three very sore season-defining defeats, Jim appears to have learnt nothing, and tonight was the end of my last bit of patience with him. | | | |

Bringing Hogan on for Allarakhia with 25mins to go was the key change that ultimately changed the game in their favour. A terrible decision destabilising the whole back line. Buyabu should have come on as straight swap on the left. Inevitability once they got in front we never looked like getting back level. So frustrating but all too predictable. | | | |

We are weak mentally. Thats the only way you can explain Spennymoor and tonight. They were rocked at 3-1 down but as soon as they recovered and started putting balls in our box again we turned to jelly. We got outmuscled and out thought all night at setpieces. Every cross they put in looked like going in our goal - not pretty but very effective and their number 2 had the right side of the pitch to himself most of the night. 8 playoff games and 1 win now. Unless we are winning this division we ain't getting back into the football league. Gutted but somewhat inevitable. |  |

That sums up our shortcomings, especially as we almost expect 3-2 to become 3-4. You can almost see goals before they go in.
Scott-Morriss has been their best player all season and even before our collapse we should have been dealing with him better. Have to think it was a mistake to start East as well because they overran us in midfield when it mattered and Barlow’s energy was missed in there.
The set piece situation was like watching Dale of old, when you are waiting for the ball to hit the net. We’d sorted that, but tonight we fell apart.
Without a Cavanagh we will always fall short. | |

If your subbing our best players and making us weaker then at least do it towards the end of the game. A side playing well and we start tinkering with the formation on 60 odd minutes. Going defensive, in these games the opposition are going to throw the kitchen sink at us and were only going to keep them out for so long. Make them worry about us. Barlow being replaced was a mistake, we have no-one to come and replace his tenacity and aggressive attacking style. He didn't look injured. Bird too always a massive danger to them as each minute ticked down, he breaks free and we'll score again. Hold up play is excellent.. but my mate said he was limping about about abit but I didn't see that. Kiaro's a weak player up front, I shuddered when he came on. | | | |

I don't think we ever looked comfortable tbh, I felt they bossed the midfield and completely dominated us on set pieces.
I felt our keeper just wasn't strong enough a presence for such a game.
Surely any manager at 3-1 up would look to solidify his defence, it certainly didn't work though.
Bird was never going to last a full game, I personally would have put Rodney and Hendon together up top and not put Mitchell on.
Everything is easy in hindsight, it was never a typical Dale performance, we were crying out for some of that keep ball we are renowned for, Southend wouldn't allow it and going long to Bird was a good option at times, but going long to Mitchell, that's just wasteful.
So it ends, a 4th place finish and a semi final appearance, would have taken that at the start of the season.

A lot to be proud of. Absolutely gutted and Jim's decision making cost us the game, but thought we played pretty well for 120 minutes.
At the end of the day, he's got us to the play-offs and a semi-final in his first full season not fighting fires every week and, whilst lots of lessons need to be learned, we're on track IF we can continue to improve next season.
As for the people booing after that, you can have a different opinion and be angry of course, but booing after that? Give your heads a wobble you weapons. |  | | |

100% on Jim this loss.
The sub to put Hogan in the left CH position and Beckwith in the left wing back position, moving Tobi to right wing back lost us the game.
That was Jim’s decision and he made it.
Beckwith is a fantastic left CH. He is not a left wing back
Hogan is a fantastic central CH. he is not a left CH.
Southend’s threat was 90% down their right/our left.
Jim had got it right by putting Tobi there with Beckwith after 20 minutes and nullified them notably.
- He could have swapped Taryn for Buyabu, a left wing back.
- He didn’t, he repeated the mistake at Oldham.
Taking off Barlow was odd, he looked more than fine
Taking off Bird ok - bit more understandable
Leaving on East for 105 minutes+ is inexplicable
No criticism of any player from me, they all gave their all. |  |
