In the end outmuscled for most of the game and outthought for the last quarter.
I’m traumatised this morning, not a word I use lightly.
I just hope that there are some strong words being said in the inner sanctums of the club over the coming days.
Having witnessed the capitulation perhaps it should also be said that in the last five minutes or so of normal time that the Southend goal led led a charmed life with the ball ricochetting all over the place.
It’s also fair to say that Southend could have had three goals in the first half, all their chances free headers from crosses. It could have been 3-3 at halftime as their keeper made a couple of decent saves.
Was East rushed back too early? He was a peripheral figure for much of the game.
BJ has known that another solid midfielder was needed since Henry’s long term injury but we collected a few more wide players to adorn the squad. Clout is no good if you don’t use it wisely.
And please get a keeper. Josh needs to tell the manager that a priority is not to play like Johan Cruyff but rather have an ability to stop shots and command the area.
Beckwith had a right go at Barrett in the second half for allowing a cross to sail across the box. Never heard language like it.

2 free headers. Weak all night conceding 3 headed goals. We need some big strong defenders next season who want to defend. And a keeper who wants to keep the ball out of the net - not just be good with his feet.

Statues.

Gilmour and Mitchell on the back post....and up against the biggest player on their team...WTF.. Mitchell has the heart of a sparrow and didn't get off the grass and Gilmour just got bullied. Southend knew we couldnt cope with the ball being fired into the 6 yard box and just kept doing it...there is a serious weakness at the heart of this squad when they are put under pressure , the lack of belief that they have what it takes, manifested by finishing top of the fair play league for the second successive season.. this is professional sport, its what they have chosen to do, they are not a collection of butchers and bakers with proper jobs to go to on Monday morning. I fear the " head coach" has assembled a team with decent skills but which lacks that " edge" that marks the difference between true winners and the guys who come second. To be fair its probably why they are playing for Rochdale, but if managed by someone who truely believes and is capable of transmitting that belief into his players anything is possible...if he cant you will always come second, third or fourth.
The next round of recruitment will be critical, do we trust McNulty to improve this squad? I am not sure I do.

Interesting talking to a mate who watched the game as a neutral, commenting that we sat back after every goal and invited pressure. Game management is Jim's biggest problem and I'm not sure when the penny is going to drop with him. When it matters most I do not believe he will ever have what it takes to get us over the line. It's well documented that we have a top 7 budget, please can somebody at the club tell Jim that harping on about the clout of others does him no favours.

Firstly, big congratulations to Southend and good luck going forward.

I dragged a mate there last night, and on the way I told him that we can play some really entertaining stuff but have a tendency to drop too deep when ahead instead of looking to go forward. Oh how I wish I was wrong.

It was typical Jim management. we could and possibly should have won that game, but for some awful substitutions. Without castigating the players; East struggled throughout whilst Barlow and Gilmour were excellent. Bird and Rodney provided decent targets and we did look good value for our lead.

Jim's subs sadly weakened us up front and especially in midfield. Sorry, but Mitchell should never have got onto the pitch such is his lack of presence since Xmas. Barlow, unless injured, should not have been replaced. as soon as he was taken off, Southend strolled through the middle of the park, and also exploited the wings almost at will. The fact that they scored with headers tells plenty. Despite us going more defensive, we didn't mark them sufficiently well.

The last goal in particular saw Gilmour and Mitchell supposedly marking their player, yet neither of them put in a challenge at all, leading to a headed across the six yard box for an unmarked sub to score with a free header.

Oh... and Hogan should have given away a penalty towards the end. He got nowhere near the ball with a slide challenge in front of the Sandy.

Am I upset? Yes. Am I surprised? Not really, because we will never be able to close this type of game out with Jim in charge.

To the owners... Look at the difference in encouragement and instructions coming from the benches during the game. Southend's Management were constantly instructing and barking encouragement to their team. Jim had hands in pockets or arms folded almost all the time. Very little enthusiasm shown, almost as if it's just another day at the office.

Not sure how many times the public of Rochdale can be let down on big match occasions. Sooner or later; they will simply have seen it once too many times.. Quite sad .

The entire ethos of the club is so ‘nice’ - epitomised by the saccharine social media output and the insipid, obsequious post match ‘interviews’. Sadly, being nice doesn’t win you anything.

Jim talks about overachievement - I think we were around par taking into account our average attendances and budget. Sorry, our respective ‘clout’.

Great to see Hilly there last night, before his regretful demise that man knew how to win - no fear.

For Dale fans of a certain generation….

I think we need a manager of a Elsie Tanner type character and not the Mavis Riley we presently have if we are to get out of this league

A great game for the neutrals, but we are Dale fans. When you play well and things go your way and you loose to a team that have posed a threat all game ultimately you have to take it. The alternative is to become bitter and twisted.
Every Southend fan I spoke to before the game predicted Maher would go defensive, wrong. Their press in the first twenty minutes worried me silly. Devante Rodney stepped forward with excellent work and a great finish, but Southend were always in it. For us to have two efforts on goal and score two is almost unheard of.
Gilmour was great (disproving his best form has been when East isn’t in the side)
EEL was a real man at the back
Rodney was very lively and busy defensively (with the muscle he carries never thought I would see him last 120 minutes effectively)
Gordon had a super game and won the correctly awarded penalty
Hendo was very good, dropping deep to move us forward when necessary.
As for the subs I thought EEL had masses on his plate aerially and it made sense to me to bring someone on who was recruited on his ability to win aerial duels.
About a minute before Bird was subbed I remarked he was spent, so no issues with that one.
I actually thought Barlow was less influential last night so could see why he was replaced.
Bottom line is we took part in a sporting event. The team played well, several players excelling themselves but we got beat by a side who offered more for most of the night
I can’t be doing with searching for scapegoats.
Building a new front line and getting some gnarl in midfield are the priorities now.
Looking forward to next season.

Reading on here today has me embarrassed to support this club. Look where we was. Doubt about even having a club. Now we are blaming a guy who stood up in our lowest point and saved us and made us better and brought together the club. Yes we lost but think about the budget we have compared to other clubs. It happens in football but to blame the man who stuck by us is appalling. I’m ashamed to support this club today

Just to address one or two of your points…
We “was” a league 1 club unit relatively recently.
Jim was offered the job . He was on the coaching staff & although it was perceived as a cheap option his promotion undoubtedly came with a substantial pay rise.
If you have comparable budgets for other national league clubs please don’t hesitate to publish them on here.

TVOS Preview - Rochdale v Southend United (Playoffs) on 06:21 - May 16 by frenzied

Probably my most frustrating season as a Dale fan.

Very stop start all season and the Devon Loch habit in the key games seems engrained at the club.

New striker ..big physical presence, ball winning midfielder .centre half and keeper please.

Not sure what we are left with once the loanees go back….

I expect bids to come in for Kairo East and Gordon.

Would guess that Mitchell is definately on his way out of San Spotty, did nothing last night and looks disinterested all round. Cheerio.

If East does go, we need to recruit a far more aggressive "ratter" in midfield (someone mentioned Cavanagh) to replace him. A player who is quicker and less lightweight and will gel with Gilmour at the same workrate. Someone who can take a good set piece. Not an easy find?

Finally, the Club must try to retain/extend the deal with Gordon....he was one of the better players last night .

There wont be any bids for Kairo. He's out of contract. I would move heaven and earth to try and pursuade Jay Bird to return. It will cost us a transfer fee but he's the real deal. If we are serious about challenging promotion again.

At a conservative estimate we need at least two strikers, a feisty midfielder, a centre back and a keeper.
Seasoned pros not 18 year old loanees.
I await the retained list with interest.

Morning after the night before post.

Congratulations Southend and good luck in the next round.

Scott-Morriss any conference fan would already be aware of, but special mention to Appiah-Forson who was absolutely fantastic throughout the game, man of the match for me.

Great support too on a Thu night, given the distance.

Right, back to grumpyville for me.

Whoever we recruit they'll have a certain personality that enables them to sing to Big Jim's tune, no idea's, no opinions, no suggestions, someone on the forum previously referenced the "battleground" when it comes to fixing bayonets going over the top Jim's trenches will be full of first aiders, message runners and water carriers!
There's no better time (my opinion) for a change than the present, sadly it won't happen I know !

TVOS Preview - Rochdale v Southend United (Playoffs) on 06:56 - May 16 by TalkingSutty

We saw a Southend Team and a manager who was clearly in charge. A manager who reacted positively to adversity and his players who relished the physical battle, smelled blood and reacted accordingly. They had more desire and belief, they sensed our soft underbelly and it was ultimately a game of men against boys. McNulty stated publicly on the eve of the match that we haven't transformed enough yet to return to the EFL..that must have been music to the ears of the Southend manager and players, the Dale manager admitting that we aren't good enough. A terrible message to send out to our players before such a crucial game.

We saw a Rochdale Team which we all know is a bunch of best mates and that includes the manager, it's why they all love playing for him. McNulty was yet again out managed and exposed in the heat of battle. A team lacking in character, hard nosed professionals, a team that can be bullied and one that doesn't seem to be held to account for poor performances. We don't have a manager, we have a coach, the players will all love him because he's a nice man but when it comes down to crucial games and pressure he wilts, hes a youth team coach. The team is a reflection of the manager and last night was a perfect example of that, too nice and no devilment. Always the bridesmaid and never the bride.

Look at the body language of McNulty in his post match interview and listen to his pathetic excuses, the fans are on the floor, devastated yet again. Defeat doesn't hurt him, he uses budgets and clout to disguise his failings as a manager. He insults the fans and also the Ogden family when he does that. He never mentions clout and budgets when we fail to beat Spennymoor and Ebsfleet twice and we throw numerous points away to the poorest teams in this league. He thinks we're all daft and he's some sort of intellectual footballing guru, donning a pair of designer spectacles and talking football speak doesn't wash Jim, we've been watching football longer than you've been on the planet.

We won't get out of this league with McNulty as manager, he doesnt have the personality to manage the type of players who you need to achieve that. The players who challenge everybody in the dressing room, players who will question the manager, players who have been there and done it, players with big personalities. We need a new manager, a winner, last night showed that. We won't get one though, not yet.

The next manager needs to be a Keith Hill type character, somebody who challenges everybody in the club, from the boardroom to the fans. When you have fans suggesting that last night was a free hit, that reflects the mentality that seems to permeate throughout the club. The whole ethos of the club has to change, there has to be a hunger and desire to win, a belief that we are good enough and its the manager and those in the boardroom who need to lead by example and bang the drum everyday in resoect of that. Start acting and talking like winners. We need a manager who wants to win at all costs and isnt bothered whether the players like him or not. Somebody who only focuses on winning and surrounds himself with winners. The total opposite of what we have now. Jim specialises in snatching defeat from the jaws of victory, Bromley, Spennymoor and Southend tells you that. His in game management is terrible. It's all about performance for him instead of being all about results and winning. That's what we saw last night.

Agree. Pre match I'd predicted 1-1 & pens on the same assumption about Southend but I also said that key would be whether McNulty had a plan B and sadly he didn't. Has Kingdon gone back - if not he could have been the plan B left wing back which might have stopped many of Southend's crosses from the right.

I was also surprised (pleasantly) at Rodney's work rate all night. Gordon was brilliant as ever - my player of the season (despite the lay off). And whilst it is frustrating I think your view on the substitutions isn't far off though I would have gone for 2 up top (without Mitchell) and 3 in midfield - probably would have replaced Barlow with Ayinde earlier. Certainly the Hogan substitution was key but I'd have put money on Beckwith being able to do the left wing back role.. how wrong we were. Equally I agree it sent the wrong signal, we needed an extra goal as their physicality was always going to be a threat.

So no tippy tappy, we scored 2 good goals, hit the bar and had several other real chances but we were beaten by a side with better tactics and ruthlessness at the death. Gutted, yes, it's the hope that kills but I'll be there again in August. Hope we get a new stronger spine to the team come then.

A bit less warm today, with temperatures perfect for football by kick off

We can do this. Not sure why, but today has a different feel to it than the cup semi, where we were strong favourites. Fortune will favour the brave

couldn’t get to the game listened to it on radio Essex who described rochdale as a Pennines town in South Yorkshire!! to change the mood a little is anyone contemplating the away trip to Truro next season? 354 mile road trip if the fixture falls on a Saturday perhaps the club could organise through travel agents a weekend package for fans?

More Ena Sharples type.

The problem has always been JM and he actually over thinks the game.
Last night southend out muscled and out fought Dale as they wanted it more...

Every manager as a sell by date and JM reached his months ago now the board after seeing last nights game need to make a decission stick to to same old or appoint a manager to take Dale further to achieve their targets....

Gutted yes, especially being 3-1 up so late on but still optimistic for the future.

A good improvement on last season & with a good core already tied down for next year we can improve in specific areas. In general our recruitment was good. If we can get a permanent keeper in, get a few proven 25-30 year old pros in I see no reason why we won't improve again. I see no reason to throw the baby out with the bathwater just yet.

Forza Nerazzurri

I agree that the introduction of Hogan was presumably to add some height to the defence and came following a sequence of long throwins.
The reshuffle meant that we were totally exposed down their right hand side.
The throwins stopped and the crosses started to rain in.
Looking at their second and third goals the keeper was all at sea for both.
And it’s been proven before (York at home?) that Hogan and EEL can’t operate together.
Incidentally it may have been indicative of Southend’s clout that whereas they could introduce someone of the calibre of Macauley Bonne we brought on Mitchell.

Absolutely agree with so much of this post and add a few random thoughts on the back of other comments.

Greig probably gets told what he can ask and BJ obviously reiterates the same PR rubbish mixed in with the current interpretation of the coaching manual. It is window dressing.

One lasting image was Jack the kitman's face at the final whistle. He looks totally p*ssed of and like many of us older supporters is rueing anther chance at glory slipping through our hands and the memories of 1969 slowly fading.

Regarding BJ good managers are born and not made and usually have key attributes such as respect, discipline and motivation as well as tactical prowess. It also helps to have tactical savvy, passion, a clear philosophy, method and Plan B. What would Ferguson, Clough or Shankly have said after last night? The squad would probably be reporting for training this morning.

We have good footballers but some of them are too physically and mentally weak to win this league which is admittedly very difficult. looking at the clout of teams next season ( Carlisle, Morecambe, Scunthorpe) we could well finish eighth or below unless things change quickly.

BJ will certainly be in charge at the start of next season but he has a partial squad re-build to do and important decisions to make. Other posters have already indicated that some players will need to move on (or be transferred), and we will need a goalkeeper, central defender, midfield general and centre forward at the very least. Our would be saviour Bird will not be here unfortunately and Rodney could easily be poached. Loanees need to be more carefully considered and need to add real quality like the Southend right winger who was man of the match last night.

I'm sure that the Ogden family will be watching closely given the atmosphere last night and our ability to attract a gate of 5,000 for important games. the Southend fans contributed massively to this. Lets make every game important from day one next season!

Finally I hope that we can find a role for Ian Henderson in some coaching/ managerial capacity if possible as he has a lot to offer in a more professional set up.

UTD.

Tough to post.

Not because we lost I can accept that its the manner in doing so.

Bromley and Spennymoor was a worry of a trend.. we got the big game hat trick last night.

3-1 up deep into the game and less than 18 minutes to go... Southend no mugs they looked more than decent all night when they did get the 2nd goal you could sense a 3rd was coming.. Agreed we could have scored a 4th to win it right at the end sadly it was not our night.

UTD.

There's a Keith Hill type character who might have said he would be interested in an assistant coach role.

Meant to mark DOWN.
