I can tell you what usually happens, most of them vanish, they link up with others and they do end up working but not legally, they don't pay taxes and as it stands the government cannot tell us how many illegals there are in the Uk, where they are and they don't have a clue how to find them.

Immigration/Border Force staff numbers were savaged by the previous Conservative governments much like the police and other public services. You can’t rebuild those numbers overnight and once you’ve lost the skilled staff some of that knowledge is lost. Interestingly, despite the outrage over small boats etc etc, enforcement action in 2021, (Covid so fairly understandable) 2022 and 2023 were much lower than the 2019 figure. Interestingly, 2023 was even lower than 2022. I’d have thought that would be an area where lots of enforcement work would have been undertaken. | | | |

"Illegal" immigrants, those who have not registered with the authorities, claimed asylum, etc, absolutely cannot claim benefits. Most of, if not all of them will be working. Deliveroo drivers, working for Slavemasters, whatever. They won't be paying tax or NI, but they will probably be taking up housing.
The bone of contention is whether or not people who rock up in Dover on a rubber dinghy should be considered as such. There is a strong argument to be made for treating them all as illegals, because if they've come from France and are genuinely fleeing for their lives then there's about half a dozen countries where they could have done so before arriving in the UK.
There is no obligation for them to claim asylum in the first safe country, but if there is an obligation for the UK to disregard the fact that they haven't then we need to withdraw from whatever organisation or treaty that makes it so. |  |

This time it’s a deal to finalise the negotiations started by the Conservatives after Brexit in 2020 regarding the border issues between Spain and Gibraltar. The Daily Mail and some other outlets are branding it a sell out, etc, but all that has happened is we’ve agreed a deal which is identical to the arrangement we have with France in relation to the Eurostar at St Pancras. It makes very much sense if you thought about it. people work illegally and don't declare it then they also claim whatever benefits they are entitled to. They don't pay rax AND get Welfare, that really is worse in every way.
It's that or to avoid being deported they work illegally and hide, not claiming benefits but also not paying any tax and often then victims of crime gangs who use the illegal businesses to launder money.
Ibviously some will behave, take their benefits and work their way through the system hoping to be allowed to stay.
