At face value worse than I expected. 12 years unchanged EU access to our fisheries (unpicking what the EU agreed to give up in the original deal and meaning this is there for good), dynamic alignment with EU regulations to get access to the SPS agreement, paying to be allowed to bid for work under the EU defence fund, and a "youth experience" scheme about which Labour are not yet giving us full details. I wouldn't be surprised to see home uni fees for EU students and no Immigrant Health Surcharge. Overall the EU got even more than they were rumoured to be demanding. We got reductions in red tape and eGate access - not the same as material resources. I heard on the radio in the early hours that there had been a breakthrough, but this seems more like a cave in. I will be delighted if there turns out to be a silver lining, but don't see it at the moment.

Europe is rearming and UK are big defence supplies. The nation cannot miss out of a whopping £150 billion fund. They want Be Systems MBDA Quinitiq and others to compete and cooperate with existing 's Euro firms.

Good to let the kids to travel and work more freely and join the educational system Erasmus.

Reverses it? That's hyperbole right there. He's agreed a deal but we aren't rejoining, we won't be in the single market not the schengen zone and we won't be subject to the ECJ.

What this is, is common sense, a deal that should have been made when we were leaving except back then we had Bojo and his clowns.
I'm not keen on Starmer really, he's made some poor moves but this one looks pretty good on paper. Lets see how it turns out.

People saying this has taken us backwards just don't get it, to have a sensible deal we had to give some ground and some of these changes will benefiit the economy, we COULD see food prices drop, energy prices drop, cooperation in other areas like defence which, given the state of the world is massive for us.
Fishing, nothing has changed and at least the tourists can stop moaning about queues

They're talking about Erasmus, cooperation elsewhere and of course, defence.

Given what Putin is doing, how Trump is behaving and of course, China, having a united defence agreement was desperately needed. NATO might fall apart.

Euro ship were due to end fishing in UK waters in 2026. Starmer has given them another 12 years. As long are stocks ars preserved nothing changes..Obviously if the stocks ars jot protected in 12 years time there will be no fish to catch.

Defence is the big winner for UK as a Europe led by Germany and France are re-arming. It is a rapidly growing sector. Russian army sales gave collapsed and there is trouble in India Pakistan China area.

The money and jobs to be created dwarfs any fishing concerns that Farage will beat his drum about .£600 billlion. Europe could use the £300billion dim Putin left in European banks .

He and his chum were very unwise to threaten people he gave massive sums of money to. They have his money and no long buy his oil and gas. Any thinking economically literate Russian voter would be appalled at his recklessness.

Fishing is devolved and the Senedd have confirmed they were not consulted. Messing with devolution is Starmer, there will be more to be said about this no doubt.

As is often the case we are missing the detail. For example, apparently we are going to have to pay to enter the EU defence market, but nobody is saying what the sum is. In addition the use of e gates at airports in the EU is subject to member nation approval but nobody can tell us what that means.
Lots of political games to be played on this.

Europe wants UK defence contractors to provide a competitive market. Germany was also looking to work with UK and possibly France to come under their nuclear "umbrella". A new nuclear submarine fleet nay be a European one given the issues with USA.

UK could certainly use some German cash and engineering .

The traditional Conservative press are going mental and frothing at the mouth as are the likes of Boris, Badenoch and Farage. The deal we left the EU on was nothing short of poor, Boris’s oven ready deal, no additional customs fees across the Irish Channel was nothing but of lies.

Starmer hasn’t served up a new fishing deal, what he’s actually done is extended the arrangement Boris et al agreed for another 12 years. Fishing is worth around Ā£0.5bn per annum to the UK economy. The export of food goods etc by volume is down 34% since 2019. In terms of the financial value in 2019 it was Ā£23.6bn whereas in 2024 it was Ā£24.6bn an increase of Ā£1bn over 5years, however allowing for inflation the change equates to a 13% decrease in the 2018 figure.
Meanwhile imports from the EU have actually increased. One of the reasons is because the EU enforce the checks on goods (paperwork etc) entering at their borders so lots of smaller exporters no longer bother even trying to exporti (rotting shellfish etc comes to mind) while on the other hand we are very lax about our checks and don’t do anything like the due diligence the EU undertake - that’s a legacy issue from previous government.

Deals are often a compromise. On this occasion we’re extending a deal agreed by a previous government in fishing (if it’s such a @@@@ deal why did the previous government sign it in the first place) to gain better access to a huge market for our food industry ( a much bigger industry employing many more people ) which could really spur the economy onwards if they could regain some of the lost ground. We’re potentially getting access to a multibillion pound defence fund and potentially more jobs etc pls a few other benefits.

Deals are invariably about a bit of give and take, and my view on this one is that it’s a positive development. Those bastions of the left wing (not) - The Federation of Small Businesses, the British Meat Processors Association and the energy industry have all welcomed the deal so it may not be all doom and gloom.

Let’s see how it pans out, but so far we’ve had a deal with the US, a deal with India and a deal with the EU. They may not be perfect, but they offering British companies and opportunity to trade and get ahead.

Starmer anti democratic attempts to get us back in the EU will cost labour even more votes in future elections .

The UK people do not want to be ruled by an undemocratic EU. How many times do the people have to tell our politicians thus.

The UK petition to have another Brexit referendum managed only 70,000 signatures after 6 months and has failed to reach the threshold for discussion in Parliament.
Compare this to the million who signed the anti Drakeford blanket 20mph imposition in Wales.

ā€œIt will take years to rebuild itā€

Hear this all the time but we have a government which despite being one of the most unpopular in history has an absolutely massive majority. They can pretty much force through whatever they want whenever they want.

If they had any answers they could change the direction of this country overnight.

But they don’t.

The 12 years of fishing access is the biggest disappointment to me. Although it is true that the deal "preserves the status quo", it halts a progressive shift that was in train to improve the situation of the UK sea fishing industry over several years. If people remember the original Brexit negotiations, the UK initially demanded an 80% reduction in EU quotas in UK waters, but the EU managed to get this down to 25% introduced gradually over several years. The last increment of this reduction comes in next year (and as far as I know that remain), but the fishing industry had hoped for more progress when annual negotiations came in. All this has brought just a 10% increase in UK quotas to date, so fishermen hoped for more. Understandably, fisherman, like the Scot interviewed on TV yesterday who had recently invested in a bigger boat, are now left very unhappy.

I wonder if we really needed to concede 12 years when 4 or 5 had been mooted. It seemed to me that Starmer made a tactical error in letting it be known that a deal was close and setting up a press conference for a given date. What seems to have happened is that the French played hard ball at the last minute (the early hours of the scheduled announcement day) and the UK caved in. Of course, the Government can say that the value of the fishing industry is small and they have their eye on the gains for other industries, but it leaves a sour taste in the mouth. There is a good account of the history of the fishing saga here.

Although the trade deal element on fishing is disappointing, Brexit created the circumstances for it to happen. It’s hard to pinpoint what is actually worse for fishermen, the extension of the existing quota deal, or the border checks that have put significant trade barriers up.

Also it’s a trade deal; there will be layoffs. The fishermen have taken a hit but there’s meat industry is happy.

As for being taken back in the EU, that not going to happen. We’re still going to be out whatever.

Brexit supports have spent years having a pop at ā€˜remoaners’ but are now (ironically) so unwilling to see any positives of a relationship with the EU, they’re furious with any of the improvements being made, only pointing to the trade offs.
