End of Term Report 24/25 – Attack on 02:24 - May 23 with 4135 views | VancouverHoop | Can't speak for others but not playing Kelman next season would be counter to everything that matters to me as a supporter. I don't care if there are offers from bigger clubs. We need to hope, to dream of what he might be, even if it's just for a season or two. He'd give us that at minimum. Maybe only for awhile, but if we trade him for cash without even getting a glimpse of what he might become it would be soul crushing.

Storming out after the third Burnley goal due to Dembele shrugging after Paal rightly screamed wanting to know where he was, was probably my low lite of the season. Hence, Paul Smyth starts. Couldn't agree more on Kelman and has to be given a chance. What sort of message does it send to younger players that even if you smash it we won't give you a chance. Still don't know why we don't play two upfront either. Kolli & Kelman, it could work....

Agree with absolutely everything in your reports. Especially your summary on Paul Smyth. You need to do the dirty work in the formation we play. Whilst talking formation I would like to see us change more to a 3,5,2 formation in certain games next season. It would certainly help Celar (and Kelman) to have a partner at the top end of the pitch. It would mean that our fancy 10's would have to be on the bench but they could come on and effect games later in the match. Anyway I've had enough of football and bloody QPR - I'm off to the beach too.

Surely the best suited two would be Frey and Kelman. A true big man, little man combo from days or yore. Frey would soften everyone up for him and do the hold up work allowing Kelman to play on the shoulder. Less risk of the ball coming straight back too.
End of Term Report 24/25 – Attack on 08:09 - May 23 with 3854 views | gazza1 | I'm sure Kelman will be given his opportunity but I have my doubts but 'fair play' to him on what he has done at Orient this season. I have changed my thoughts from 'not good enough' to 'give the man a chance'. As for Kelman/Kolli starting up front as a two forward line.......far too weak, we need a player who can 'handle themselves', not two weaklings!!! & not two untested players at this level. That puts Frey in the picture but we need to sign a striker in the close season, if we don't then expect similar to this season or worse especially if we get the injuries we did this season.

I suggested this back in the early days of the Kelman thread! Assuming we don't bring in a proven championship goal scorer we have to give Kelman a chance to show what he can do at this level, which will need someone like Frey beside him. And given that at this early stage we appear to be going into next season without any fullbacks, 3-5-2 kind of makes sense from that perspective too.

The scary thing is that I wouldn't be surprised if they did sell him.

I think we need to sign a big powerful striker for the likes of Kelman, Celar and maybe Kolli to play off. An alternative, ideally a better alternative to Frey.

To be honest, if they do because of a strict adherence to the "game model", that's fine. I wouldn't necessarily be happy, because I want to see what he can do, but it would have an internal logic. As was discussed on the pod, the worst scenario is giving him half a chance across a few games and then selling him below the value he'd command in this preseason. [Post edited 23 May 10:37]

End of Term Report 24/25 – Attack on 10:55 - May 23 with 3409 views | eastside_r | So much was I enjoying the panel podcasts that I had neglected the written pieces, until yesterday. Oh what bounteous joy. Where else could you find stories of a centurion French lady and a small Japanese boy interwoven into the narrative of your football team? I have been reading Clive’s stuff for a very long time. I am sure that he’s hasn’t used that story about young Ake before; perhaps he never had the opportunity. But what absolute gold, I was literally crying with laughter. I know, I know. When Clive does his ‘Stop it / Grow up’ (see here Brest and previously e.g. Will Smallbone) it’s aimed at idiots like me. Read the piece again this morning and it set me off again. Have a good holiday Clive.

Am desperately hoping last season will be looked at as a lost one for him and he'll be a lot better in 25/26. But part of that is going to depend on having players around him who can put it on a plate. That could mean Madsen continuing his improvement (just to crank up the improbability of it all) Dembele and Chair staying fit, maybe Kolli maintaining form and fitness behind him, who knows?

Just too many improbables *JCS stays fit *Chair is back * Dembele stays fit / improves etc * Madsen improves * Celar improves * Kelmann is a star * Kolli comes good * The recruiting team find a striker / full back / midfielder etc. And we still don't know who our manager will be. I feel afraid. [Post edited 23 May 14:31]

End of Term Report 24/25 – Attack on 14:45 - May 23 with 2960 views | lassel | I’ll die on the hill that Celar is really not that bad - he’s also not *that* good, he’s a 10 goal a season striker with a fair wind and playing downhill. From the first game of the season his game was pretty simple to see, be on the move and get to the penalty spot. Several times in the first few games we had 3 on 2 breaks and he went to the penalty spot for Smyth to draw his man and tee him up only for Smyth to shoot into the first man. Several times his movement got him into position to score from set pieces only for him to miss the ball…. Watch his Lugano goals we signed him for, penalties or found on the penalty spot. The crazy situation is us going into the season with a striker who doesn’t run the channels and doesn’t hold the ball up, and a striker who can’t move but can hold the ball up as they require completely different setups. Obviously move him on if anyone comes in for him this summer, but he did get a bit of a harsh rap this season. [Post edited 23 May 14:47]

Yeah I don't think needing it on a plate is such a bad thing. We just need to acknowledge that and get it to him. We've had plenty of forwards who can't kick it in the right direction, even if it is on a plate. Not that Celar has proven anything at all yet, of course, plate-related or otherwise.
End of Term Report 24/25 – Attack on 06:43 - May 24 with 2127 views | dmm | Celar and Kelman seem to be quite similar box strikers. However, Kelman has proven he can play as a lone striker in a system that plays to his strengths, whereas Celar looks like he needs to play in a two. I can't see the formation changing next season, despite a new coach coming in, so if we are looking to bring in a new striker - funds permitting - would the club help Celar move on? I wouldn't be surprised if he'd be happy to take that opportunity. We'd no doubt have to take a financial hit on any deal but so be it.

Celar played as a lone striker in Switzerland and we signed him off the back of it. The difference is that they played to his strengths and we never have. Not that he’s particularly good even if we did of course.

, not two weaklings! If you think Kelman is a 'weakling', you clearly haven't seen the new bulked up version of him - built like a tank and operated as a lone striker against Div 3 defenders. The boy can handle himself AND score goals
