Alex Stepney didn't leave until '78 having joined in 1966, so was there with Arthur for six years.
Matt Busby became manager in 1945, straight after WW2 and his squad included players signed pre-war.
Bert Whalley played for Man U before and after the war, then joined Matt Busby's coaching staff (sadly dying at Munich). Bert signed for Man United on the 7th May 1934.
I can't see anyone earlier than that who played post-war, so that does appear to be the earliest date that there were no Man U players who played for either Sir Matt or Sir Alex. | | | |

Never mind Birtles, there will have been scores, possibly even hundreds, of players who were at MU during those (nearly) hundred years who didn't play for either.
The point, however, is that it has been claimed that there was always one who did, with Evans being the last of a very long line. [Post edited 28 May 16:14]

When I read this, the name and the brogues, plus the fact I'd never heard of him (I'm a trivia nerd and proud of it!), made me sure that this was a spoof - and a damned good one, at that - somewhere between Billy's Boots and Barnstoneworth United's Golden Gordon.
And reading his wiki page wasn't exactly dispelling me of that belief, except that all the citations etc stood up.
As for the name, the only match for the magnificent Tinsley Lindley that comes to mind is that of Ireland's Olphert Stanfield, from the same era. Olphert played 30 times between 1887 and 1897, which made him the most capped international footballer of the Victorian era/19th century. Scored 11 times too, pretty impressive considering Ireland regularly got humped by scores incl 0-11, 2-10, 1-9 etc.
