Mad Football Stats & Facts on 23:55 - May 27 with 1825 views | NewBee | It's actually the first season there’s not a single player who played under either Fergie or Busby since the 1930’s, a 100 year legacy between them. Or so I've read.

Gary Birtles was only there from 1980-82,so that’s at least one who wasn’t there under either manager.I’m sure there are loads more signed by docherty and big Ron who didn’t last long.

It's getting that you can't even make up your own stats on here anymore. Personally, I care enough to argue but not enough to research, and I'm sticking to that as a point of principle. So when I quote stats and facts, although not factually correct, they do provide insight into my truth and should be treated as the truth, even when I clearly made them up.

Arthur Albiston oh Albiston Joined Man U in ‘72. Debuted in ‘74 and played for them till ‘88 so the ‘73 Ferguson stat holds up. Quite incredible.

8 out of 10 LFW posters categorically stated that they prefer my real stats to your made up ones. FACT.

Mad Football Stats & Facts on 15:15 - May 28 with 1064 views | Rassilon | (Wikipedia on a boring train journey...) Arthur Albiston signed for Man U. a year after Matt Busby left, but he overlaps with players who were there under Busby. Alex Stepney didn't leave until '78 having joined in 1966, so was there with Arthur for six years. Matt Busby became manager in 1945, straight after WW2 and his squad included players signed pre-war. Bert Whalley played for Man U before and after the war, then joined Matt Busby's coaching staff (sadly dying at Munich). Bert signed for Man United on the 7th May 1934. I can't see anyone earlier than that who played post-war, so that does appear to be the earliest date that there were no Man U players who played for either Sir Matt or Sir Alex.

Wah? Never mind Birtles, there will have been scores, possibly even hundreds, of players who were at MU during those (nearly) hundred years who didn't play for either. The point, however, is that it has been claimed that there was always one who did, with Evans being the last of a very long line. [Post edited 28 May 16:14]

That's because you framed the question in a leading manner. When I did a follow up questionnaire, in my head, with more neutral terming of the question, I factualised that I was overwhelmingly more popular then you. And that's factwang.

I thought it was. Oh well, I know what I meant. Meanwhile, Chelsea beating Betis tonight, made them the first foreign team to beat a Spanish side in a final since 2002. Spanish teams had won the past 27 finals in men's European club or international football to involve a side from that country. (And if you think that is unclear, don't blame me, I cut & pasted it from the BBC)

Bored and can’t sleep - there’s at least one earlier player: George Vose signed for Man United in 1932 and played a single game for them after the war. http://www.lusoweb.co.uk/legend33.htm [Post edited 29 May 1:17]

Mad Football Stats & Facts on 07:02 - May 29 with 519 views | Sonic_Hoop | In 1969, an eight-year-old Gary Lineker attended the FA Cup final as Leicester lost to Manchester City. Peter Shilton was in goal for Leicester that day. Lineker went on to play with Shilton for England for almost a decade, and still retired from playing three years before him

When I read this, the name and the brogues, plus the fact I'd never heard of him (I'm a trivia nerd and proud of it!), made me sure that this was a spoof - and a damned good one, at that - somewhere between Billy's Boots and Barnstoneworth United's Golden Gordon. And reading his wiki page wasn't exactly dispelling me of that belief, except that all the citations etc stood up. As for the name, the only match for the magnificent Tinsley Lindley that comes to mind is that of Ireland's Olphert Stanfield, from the same era. Olphert played 30 times between 1887 and 1897, which made him the most capped international footballer of the Victorian era/19th century. Scored 11 times too, pretty impressive considering Ireland regularly got humped by scores incl 0-11, 2-10, 1-9 etc. Tough-looking hombre, too:
