Transfer window opens tomorrow - New Keeper Required 10:26 - May 31 with 2313 viewsPatfromPoole

Ramsdale is obviously headed elsewhere.

Bazunu hasn't played in England since his injury in April 2024.

Based on his stats, his performances this year in Liege appear to have been, er, Standard......

McCarthy is McCarthy. Not getting any younger or better.

Lumley is out of contract.

Think we really need to look to recruit and spend relatively big in this area.

It is such a key position.

Let’s hope Will still places emphasis on quality not quantity
Our failure to sign a Decent keeper prior to ramsdale has a lot to do with our predicament now
Also need a striker and a leader at the back

Potentially a decent shout if we aren’t going to be doing the hari kari passing triangles in our own penalty area, where he definitely has a weakness.

I think he would be a more sensible free transfer signing than someone like Ings.

Forster looks fitter now than he did when he was at Saints. Unlike Ings.

Baz is out for a while with an injury. Get Fraser back on a free. He should of stayed and McCarthy gone. It wAs a no brainer.
I would take ings as well

I do think that if we are moving to a more high-tempo style of play, this is another barrier to Bazunu.

The passing triangles nonsense in our own penalty area was actually something he was pretty comfortable with.

So less reason to play him if we hopefully aren't going to be doing any more of that.

Not sure about Fraser. Will Still likes to play out from the back SOMETIMES (which I don't have a problem with, it's only a problem when it's the only option). But FF, as we all know, is disastrous with the ball at his feet, even worse than AM.

These days you need a keeper who can pass and receive the ball with his feet, even if you're not playing stupid-ball like RM. But if WS was prepared to lose that option and just play with an old skool keeper, then FF could do a job for us.

Forster at 37 years old is still a better keeper than Bazunu, McCarthy or Lumley.

I wonder who he played for before joining Spurs ?

Oh, wait a minute.

It wouldn't surprise me if they started out with Bazunu or McCarthy and they'll make their own judgement call on them.

I'd have gone for Johannson at Stoke.
Forster for me is too error prone.

Bringing Forster back would be a retrograde step.
We new fresh new faces.
I'm sure there's keepers that would jump at the chance of joining us in Championship.
Will Still needs to be trusted to assess what he needs & SR must back his judgement.
It's got to be a New Era for the club otherwise we'll just be stuck in the Russell Martin mould.

A top bloke, Johansson.

He put a load of money behind the bar at The Cutlers Arms for Rotherham fans before his last game for the club in our last Championship season.

We need experience. Goalkeepers reach their peak in their30s. It's a position where we don't want another promising youngster. Hopefully, we learned that with Bazunu.

I do find it amazing how so many people on here concentrate onthe quality of the goal keeper and seem to forget that one of the best keepers in the PL (Ramsdale) let in more goals than ever last season.
The key to keeping goals against down is a top defensive back line, and not the goalie.
The defence’s number one role is to stop the oppo from getting into a position to shoot.
For me therefore if we can get a top back three/four/five then the GK position will take care of itself. End of.

Okay so as long as you have a goood defence you can have a midget goalie with no hands or prime Peter shilton and you’d get the same results. Deffo.

I agree up to a point.

However, the majority of games in the Championship are pretty tight.

People harp on about Brent's 25-match unbeaten run.

However a lot of those games were draws, and / or games with goals in injury-time.

An example being Watford away when Bazunu let one through his hands in the 94th minute which cost us 2 points.

Like Kelvin Davis in the George Burley era, Bazunu has a terrible ratio for goals conceded v attempts faced. It was up there with the very worst in the Championship the season before last.

If the Club are serious about finishing in the top 2 next season, they will need a keeper who very regularly makes the difference between finishing games with 1 point or 3 points.

Sadly that keeper is not Bazunu.

Even if you've got a good defence, a good keeper can make the difference between winning and losing. The gap between us and the rest was so big this year that Ramsdale's efforts had little impact, but when we played teams who were nearly as bad as us, his efforts did count. I remember the Everton home game which we wouldn't have won without him.

As for the defence, the best way to get a solid defence is to have a midfield that provides protection and forwards who are the first line of defence.... it's a team game. But the spine of the team matters more than the fringes and the keeper is part of the spine.

Seconded.

Ramsdale is really good, but then so is pretty much every keeper in the Prem nowadays. He couldn't keep all the shots out, as the defence in front of him was so weak.

In the Championship, it's a much more level playing field. But a top keeper will make a real difference.

This is a good shout. He's had a good season despite Stoke's season generally, and with us being "2nd favourites" without any team changes, we could be a promising club to come to

I really don't think our central defenders are that terrible. They've had a ton of nonsense to deal with and that simply hasn't been possible to deal with in the Prem because they've so easily been torn and picked apart.
We're been let down by poor tactics, poor formations, a poor midfield that couldn't hold a banana and fundamentally rotten recruitment.
Once our left and right backs can defend (preferably new left and right backs) and we get the aforementioned failings correct then we'll start challenging all-comers.
I'm hoping Still will be ruthless and sweep out all the dead wood and rebuilt his team which will probably take more than one season. And that will suit me fine. If we can build a team capable of challenging in the Premier in two years - that's what we should be aiming for. If Still manages in a season that'll be a near miracle.
Talk of has been like McCathry, Bazunu, Forster and Ings is so unambitious and retrograde. We can do much better.
Watching highlights from 1980 - 1982 seasons, we're clearly light years from that excellence. It would be fantastic to return to that that of football. One can but dream.

Viktor Johansson must be good. He was voted Stoke City's 'Player of the Season' this season just gone. And look at his recent few seasons form...

Rotherham United Young Player of the Season: 2020–21
Rotherham United Player of the Season: 2022–23, 2023–24

you can hide the odd average defender in a good unit, trouble is ours are all average, full backs who cant defend and central defenders prone to errors and have zero pace, add to that no pace and physicality in midfield its no wonder weve conceded for fun.Add to that smallbone coming on,who would struggle to play walking football our problems are clear to see.
