Sardinia for us. Is it nice? Is it full of sardines?

Sardinia is brilliant, we've been a few times.

On the south coast, Su Gunventeddu is great: A delightful sandy cove with the ruins of Roman Nora at one end.

Near Oliena and the centre of the island, Orgosolo is really worth a visit. Lots of the buildings are covered in huge, colourful murals.

Went there last year (alcudia) for the first time last summer and hated it. So overcrowded and the hotel was abysmal despite being 4 star. I agree the beaches are good though.

Probably because you stayed in a hotel in Alcudia. Not the best part of the Island.

Very fortunate to be off enjoying Swedish parental leave so we decided to take advantage of it and get away as much as we can.

Went to Rome last month, will do Copenhagen and Helsinki next month, Gran Canaria after and then we will do Singapore, Phuket & Bali before they drag me kicking and screaming back to the office.

Yes love Crete & not stayed in Rethmon only took a tour some years ago there but has a fantastic sandy beach, looking to go there next year, going to Split in Croatia in sept & never been there & heard it good, anyone been?

Crete is great but I particularly like the south coast. It's not very touristy but it's scenic, laid back and very cheap. It's only about 90 minutes drive from Heraklion airport, the roads are quiet and car hire is ridiculously cheap.

We've stayed in Plakias, Agia Galini, Mirtos and Matala. The last two are our favourites. Mirtos has a long beach, enough bars and restaurants for a week of variety and the people are charming. Matala has a sandy cove next to cliffs which were used as a necropolis in Roman times. It's more touristy but it's quite something to be able to sit on a warm and sunny beach and gaze across a wide bay at snow capped mountains (I'm talking about May time).

Lots of tourists walk the Samaria gorge but at the upper, inland end of the gorge, you can lose the crowds and walk upwards towards the Gingilos peak. It's spectacular and very peaceful. If you're lucky - like we were - you might spot the very rare bearded vulture.

In the centre of the island, the village of Syvritos is well worth visiting. The wildflower meadows in the vicinity are beautiful but when you get to the village, there is a tiny chapel filled with ancient frescoes which is built on the remains of a Roman basilica. Don't worry if it's locked, you either ask for the massive iron key at the bar opposite or, as was our experience, someone will just appear with it. A ten minute walk takes you from the centre of the village to the top of a hill sprinkled with Minoan ruins. You're likely to be alone up there with just the bees, birds and wildflowers for company as you gaze up at 2000 metre peaks. Marvellous!

You'd better ask Alanis.

City break in Lisbon late Summer then Ashes trip in December. 2 Tests & 2 weeks+ in Oz with a Bali & Kuala Lumpar stopovers each way. Gonna be epic (I hope).
Fairly Sure it’ll beat the Norwich away on Boxing Day.

Split is very nice but make a trip to both Trogir and the Krka National Park where the falls are whilst you’re there.

Interested to know how you get on. We’re planning2 weeks there in September, taking local trains from San Sebastián up to Santiago de Compostella. Avoiding the bigger towns and hoping to get more of a local flavour. Was inspired by a book called ‘Slow trains around Spain’ by Tom Chesshyre

Oh great, we’ve booked a hotel in Alcudia having not been to Mallorca before.

Has anyone had a nice experience there???

We have booked an adults only hotel at the top end of the beach just before the port and it was not cheap!! Hotel does have great reviews though so hoping we can just walk out on to the beach and go for a dip as and when we want to - and don’t have to park ourselves in a cramped square of sand if it is really busy .

Also make sure you go on one of the Diocletian's Palace Walking Tours at the beginning of your holiday (rather than near the end like we did last year). It will give you such a great insight into what the whole place is about. And you will see stuff in a different light, that you would otherwise have never given more than a passing glance to.

I'm envious, Sicily is great. Some thoughts:

Cefalu is a lovely seaside town, very atmospheric and historic.

The archaeological site of Segesta is well worth a visit. There's a large, ruined Doric temple and also, the remains of a Greek theatre, high up on a hill which looks out to sea:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Segesta

The mountain town of Novara di Sicilia is an authentic, attractive place:

Brac, Croatia in September (anyone been?).

We did four nights in Brac (staying in Bol) before going to Split last summer.
Very nice island and not too touristy. But it can get very busy as a day trip venue.
Also, be prepared to walk up some very steep slopes.
I recommend "Argento" as a restaurant.

Not this year. We've lost about £80k in contracts in the last year or so with *looks around* all this happening in the world. Looking better but lots of work being done to keep pipeline work coming in, even over the summer.

It's always noisiest at the shallow end

I've done from Bilbao to Ferrol (Galicia) in the slow train all along that coast. It's very relaxing. However, Brian's plan to walk it sounds much more exciting.

My personal preference is for cities though. Barcelona being my favourite for its vibrancy. My recommendation for a once in a lifetime holiday would be Rio de Janeiro, but it needs to be quite carefully planned because one or two places that you want to visit can be tourist traps.
