Interested to know how you get on. We’re planning2 weeks there in September, taking local trains from San Sebastián up to Santiago de Compostella. Avoiding the bigger towns and hoping to get more of a local flavour. Was inspired by a book called ‘Slow trains around Spain’ by Tom Chesshyre

Love trains. That sounds like a great trip to me.

Pesaro Italy for a week, then a night in Bologna. Just taking youngest son (17) and cannot wait for the 'not eating that, not eating that either' routine.......

We went to Bologna many years ago. Half the restaurants were closed in August for the owner's holidays.

Sicily. Hiring a car so a few days near Taormina for some sighting, then heading north towards Palermo for a week in an all-inclusive place.

Just got back from there. Sicily has a turbulent history going back to the 8th century BC so many interesting archaeological sites. Another thing that is interesting is the driving. Going from Cefalu to our hotel involved driving up a two-way helter skelter in the dark.

Belfast is feckin superb mate. We normally fly in and out because the family are in the sticks. On our last trip, we were fogged in so couldn’t fly and had to stay 2 extra nights in the city; we had a fantastic extended holiday.
There are people on here that have more knowledge than I do, but pm me for some top touristy things to do if you like.
Northern Ireland is such a great place.

Did I ever mention that I was in Minder?

Yes, the beach will be visited. Looking forward to the restaurants even though neither of us like seafood. Need to do some research before going to keep my son occupied.

I drove the wrong way down a one way street in Siracusa...a four lane one way street!

To be honest, none of the other road users seemed that bothered, whereas I would've been hung, drawn and quartered if I'd done that where I live.

If you're in Taormina, then book an outdoor table here for dinner. https://www.tripadvisor.es/Restaurant_Review-g187892-d12368192-Reviews-Ristorant

Easily done. The satnav in our hire car sent us the wrong way down one way streets more than once. Crazy.

A few years back, we were up in the Pyrenees, on holiday, with me driving and Mrs R from Afar using Google Maps to help us navigate.

We trundled up the mountain road and approached a junction. "Google says to go go right, through the tunnel," said my wife.

"That'll be difficult," I replied, "The tunnel is closed for maintenance...for the next four months".

Get an outdoor table at Padela restaurant - fab. Also see if there's anyone in concert in the amphitheatre and if so book it now. And try and daytrip to Rovinj.

I’m celebrating retiring for a second time with my first ever visit down under and seeing my uncle and friends in Melbourne who emigrated there. 3 1/2 weeks in November / December so my season ticket is not as good a value as I thought it was. Scared of snakes and spiders so than good they haven’t got any. Following the thread love Crete as well

For those going to Sicily, if you're in Palermo, you must visit the Catacombs: https://www.palermocatacombs.com/. It sounds scary, but it really isn't. It's an absolutely fascinating place.

Oh great, we’ve booked a hotel in Alcudia having not been to Mallorca before.

Has anyone had a nice experience there???

We have booked an adults only hotel at the top end of the beach just before the port and it was not cheap!! Hotel does have great reviews though so hoping we can just walk out on to the beach and go for a dip as and when we want to - and don’t have to park ourselves in a cramped square of sand if it is really busy .

Mate, tbf the port area of Alcudia is amazing. The beach is like something out of a movie set. My hotel was a 5-10 minute bus ride to the south. Theres a great curry house around the corner if thats your thing. Lots of lovely restaurants along the beach.
Apart from overcrowding, I had no problems with the area. It was just my hotel sucked. You will have a great time I'm sure.

Technology advances, unfortunately humans do not.

Considering Tossa de Mar or Lloret de Mar in the Costa Brava, or Alghero in Sardinia.
Any recommendations for keeping an otherwise grumpy 15yo son amused there?
