"Shoot" "Beano" "Roy of the Rovers" 08:43 - Jun 13 with 6710 views | numptydumpty | As a young boy used to buy all of these. When I became a "man", still waiting tbf, purchased "Viz" and the "Today" newspaper. Don't buy magazines or newspapers anymore. Internet and round clock television changed all that. Sometimes less information was more for me. Anyone still buy magazines or newspapers or know anyone that buys comics ???

There were other fictitious teams in their stories - anyone remember?

Anyone with kids / grandkids what's the replacement for these type things over last 20 years. I hope not everything is on a games station or I pad.....

"Shoot" "Beano" "Roy of the Rovers" on 14:15 - Jun 13 by R_from_afar | I loved Tiger & Scorcher.! Pedant alert: It was *Martin's* marvellous mini There was also "Nipper," about an urchin who turned out to be an amazing footballer, and "Football Family Robinson," in which all the players as well as the coaching staff were members of the same family. The manager was a formidable matriarch called Ma; she was a bit like Ena Sharples, except she could organise a defence. There was also "Rod and line,' about a young lad who was trying to become a top class angler. "Roy of the Rovers" featured a story - "Millionaire Villa" - in which a rich bloke bought a struggling football club, with a condition of the purchase being that the purchaser would actually play in the team. I used to worry that the story would give Flavio ideas . Great days, simpler times. |
Great shout ‘Nipper’ Lawrence was it ? I stand corrected on Mike/Martin, thanks. Don’t recall the others you mention. Maybe the family Robinson ? I get confused with some of the RotR characters, like the GK Stewart ? Was there a little rotund fella ?

I was about to say Ivor Lott and Tony Broke, but apparently they were in Buster. In which case, I remember Sids Snake (oo-err), Mustapha Million and the Bumpkin Billionaires. Also a massive fan of Scream, which was a horror comic that came out in the 80s, but still have fond memories of Charley's War, which I think was in Action

I’ve got a brother a year older so we always had to take opposite sides. He was Whizzer, I was Chips. He was Jack of United, I was Jimmy of City. And he didn’t even like football.

Love this. I am guessing that was not the first and only time time in your life that you cut off an avenue of pleasure for a lady. It's all about the sacrifice!

Loved 2000AD, but it didn't come out till I was in my late teens. You forgot to mention Slaine, Dorse. Absolutely loved Slaine! When I was a kid it was all the ones people have already mentioned, plus my gran used to send me TV Century 21 every week, which I thought was brilliant - published in the style of a newspaper of the future, with the front page usually dedicated to fictional news stories set in the worlds of Fireball XL5, Stingray, Thunderbirds, Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons and other stories.
