#72 bus 20:53 - Jun 14 with 3514 views | Match82 | My wife is currently in the suburbs of Austin TX. She's stumbled across a bar where they've turned an old route master bus with the 72 bus route into a brew pub. I'm glad I've trained her well enough to recognize that this is an important detail. She's currently claiming it would be inappropriate and confusing to shout "You Rs" at the clientele which is disappointing though

Sorry I downvoted you by mistake. The Angel was a Youngs pub in Roehampton,or maybe the Maltese Cat. You certainly couldn’t beat a pint of ordinary back then.I revisited it about 18 months ago and they virtually had to blow the cobwebs off the Youngs pump. The 72 bus was my regular route to hq to watch the R’s back in the 70’s,and being a double decker the spare ticket rolls ended up in my pocket once the conductor went upstairs.Nothing gets over Hammersmith bridge now,or is ever likely to in the near future.

The Angel was in the village as I recall. The Maltese Cat was off Roehampton Lane in an estate; which we'd pile into for isotonic beers after playing football on Wednesdays. I used to get the 72 bus from White City station to the Roehampton limb centre as a kid with my mum, then went to college down there, and was in/visited the area until the early 90s. So many great pubs in Putney, Richmond, East Sheen, Mortlake and Barnes. I suspect many gone to the wall or comverted to apartments.

I used to work in barnes for a while when it was Budweiser, but it’s now very run down and was advertising a car wash and serviced offices last week. Also noticed that the Mawson Arms next door to the Fullers brewery has gone.

Yes, the Angel. Young's of course a poor imitation of the great ale brewed at Wandsworth. Not even sure who brews it now - it went to Charlie Wells, then Marston, now who knows ?

They've been trying for some time to convert that brewery into flats. They finally got planning permission recently. Mawson arms went just after lockdown IIRC. [Post edited 15 Jun 8:08]

The Mawson was a terrific lunchtime pub ( not open in the evening ). Great beer, food and staff and the brewery workers were great company.
#72 bus on 09:48 - Jun 15 with 2194 views | BklynRanger | I went to Uni in Roehampton from Sept '92. I actually enrolled through the A-levels 'clearing' process on my birthday, about 3 weeks beforehand and was determined not to leave the dole office on Chichester St in Belfast (where all the prospectuses and the telephones were) until I'd sorted somewhere. In those days it was 'affiliated to the Univ of Surrey'. So I got into the pub for my birthday drinks and told everybody I was moving to London. I'd been a QPR supporter for 2 or 3 years by then but had never been south of Chester, so it was a nice coincidence to be able to walk outside the gates of my student halls and hop on the 72 bus down the road to LR. Was some team that season too of course, which didn't hurt. I have a close friend who worked in The Angel during those years. Was a good pub then - run by an Irish lady, Chris, and her husband Tom - a former Scottish amateur boxing champion - not a big chap but lightning quick with his hands. The other pub down by the corner, The Kings Head had a big Scouse fella, Carl, who mostly kept that one under control too. I was last in them about 10 years ago and they'd diverged a bit, with the landlords long gone. The Angel was a lot more run down, and The Kings Head has had one of those slightly soulless refurbs, but otherwise not bad. Three decades later, I'm back to living a 35-40 min walk from it all, not that I'm ever in Roehampton to be honest. Oh and the Stag Brewery redevelopment is now, apparently, just around the corner - pros and cons to that certainly. https://www.richmond.gov.uk/news/news_may_2025/green_light_stag_brewery_redevelo [Post edited 15 Jun 9:49]

Essox, I have a vague memory of getting on a trolleybus with my mum aged about 4. I thought it was on the Goldhawk going east but I could well be wrong. I can certainly remember them around the 'bush but I was too young to remember any details.

Playing field was in Roehampton so if games (once a week) in the morning it was 72 then 22 to Chelsea and vice versa when games in the afternoon. As an aside had my first cigarette on the top deck of the 72, sick as a dog and have never touched them since. [Post edited 16 Jun 10:10]

My first cigarette was at school in Ham, behind the bike sheds in 1st year. Definitely stunted my growth.. lol
