Isle Of Wight Festival 10:20 - Jun 20 with 3028 viewsSaintNick

Am i just getting old, but it seems to be trying to steal Glastonbury's modern day reputation as a festival for the middle class family's and middle age and above punters.

Headliners Sting, Stereophonics, Justin Timberlake, all acts with 30 years or more in the spotlight.

The supporting cast isn't much better, given the lack of big bands coming through in the last 20 years or so, I would say the days of the big festivals are numbered.

Exactly my point, there are barely any new acts that could headline a festival these days

Younger people on the whole ain't interested in four blokes playing rock n roll anymore.

It's a bit like being in the 80/90s and moaning that Bing Crosby should be headlining Reading Festival.

We're all just old Nick.

You are right, I watched an interview with Jean Jacques Burnell of the Stranglers who was asked whether he thought back in 1977 that he would still be playing 48 years later in 2025.

He said back in 1977 that there were no bands still going from 1929, so no he wasn't expecting to

My neighbours have just gone to the IOW festival and they're in their early 60s. I think that says it all.

I think I'm in that zone (late 40s) of having ZERO interest in going, to any of them. I'll join the pensioners going when I retire (which will probably be 80).

Nostalgia isn’t what it used to be….

Surprised it took you two days, Nick

Anyway, the weather here is great and the toilets are surprisingly ace.

We’ll get by.

There’s still plenty of bands out there. They just don’t get the deserved airplay anymore. Radio 6 would rather single females rapping . Music today is mostly about single woman singing wrapping because that’s what is deemed cool by the man

My 2 daughters are heavily into guitar bands and regularly go to big gigs at Wembley arena and the 02 to see bands. They sell out but most people have never heard of them. Not sure what that says about the state of radio or music media these days. I guess for a start kids don't listen to the radio anymore in the same way they don't watch regular tv.
Also they are usually listening to music via air pods so I'm not subjected to their tastes unlike when I was a kid and blasted out my stereo for the entire neighbourhood to enjoy..

To answer Nick’s earlier point that the days of big festivals are numbered, which he has been saying each summer for at least the last 5 years…..

It is probably a consequence of them being more middle-class that festivals have never had a brighter future.

If it was still the days of it being £50 a ticket and cesspits for toilets, nobody would organise them.

They have been our main family holiday for a few years as we know they are safe environments to take our kids to.

Currently at the IOW Festival, spent an hour or so last night at a stage which is exclusively for young bands, and where there was a great atmosphere.

The bands are out there, they just need the sort of clever management that McGee gave Oasis around 1993-94.

Sting - what a legend. He looks good for 75. Only watching on TV, but what a performance this evening.

To clarify I wasn't saying that festival are numbered because they are now middle class family things, I have no problem with families going, I see all your pictures etc and it looks good.

My point that festivals are numbered is all about the age of the headliners and the lack of truly festival headlining class acts coming through.

It's been 20 years since the likes of Kings of Leon, Arctic Monkees etc broke through.

How old is Sting now ? just googled him , he will be 74 in October, how much longer has he got.

Sonic Boom made a good point about bands we havent heard of but our children have sell out big gigs.

Truth is that music is now consumed on spotify and i pods, you don't hear it in every day life anymore.

Whose in the top 10, I knew in 1975/85/95 even 2005 it was still going, could barely name a band from 2015 and couldn't tell you a chart hit for the last 10 years.

Music is struggling to survive, we don't consume it as we used to do.

So who will headline Glastonbury in 20 years time ?

Yes, total class, just three brilliant musicians.

Kids today would probably prefer listening to AI generated garbage in their front rooms wearing virtual reality headsets pretending to be at a festival.

I consider music 20 years old as modern!

I must have been watching a different Sting.
I thought it was a disappointing session from Sting.
It started badly but it did improve as the session went on but not enough for me to be impressed.
As for Example, what was that all about.
Certainly not a good example.

Pat Sir, assuming you are back from your jaunt abroad, can I ask who the fave acts were for the weekend? Generally interested.

Did you catch Pigeon Detectives? James in the Big Top?

Ready and waiting to mop up those European places......

I am indeed back, sir.

Top 3 acts:

1. Supergrass
2. James
3. Sting

1 I have never seen Supergrass, but they had a few songs in the 1990's that were pretty inoffensive without really stirring me.

2. I like the off James song, seen them once about 15 years ago or so, again a few decent songs but they don't stir me.

3. Sting, I saw the Police at the Gaumont in 1979, it wasn't sold out , probably around the time they had their first hit Roxanne I think, they were ok but nothing special, I haven't seen them or Sting since, again a band with a few inoffensive songs but nothing special.

Im not trying to rubbish your taste in music, its all subjective, one mans meat is anothers poison, just giving my opinion on these 3 acts.

Anyone else that was ok ?

I didn’t actually see that many as my daughter was unfortunately ill for quite a bit of the festival, so while I could hear most of it from our field, I didn’t see that many.

Of those that I did see, I also enjoyed:

Clean Bandit
Example
Timberlake (he put on a decent show, I thought)

Would have liked to see Pigeon Detectives, Paul Heaton, Texas and Alison Moyet, but missed them.

The first 3 I have heard the names can say I have heard a song, I had the Pidgeon Detectives first album which was ok and again I would use the word innoffensive here.

Paul Heaton I would have liked to see, one of Engalnds greatest lyricists perhaps only bettered by Nigel Blackwell out of Half Man Half Biscuit, Texas pretty much passed me by and Alison Moyet was hard to pass by at one stage, but musically It wasn't my cup of tea
