Eze Free Thread (Non QPR): Q: Is (polite)Society gone or am I just aging? 21:17 - Jul 1 with 2396 viewsA40Bosh

Last night I popped in to local Sainsbury’s to get a couple of things and a bottle of bubbles as today is our 30th wedding anniversary.

As I had the audacity to purchase an expensive fizz the red light on the till was flashing at the self check out which resulted in two members of staff approaching my ‘SCO’ (if you know you know) from opposite directions. Upon arrival they decided to have a full blown row about who should go and cover the “manned” tills (what’s left of them in store) and who was due to take a break soon and at no point either worrying about attending to the customer whose purchases needed scrutiny in case I was nicking anything or was not old enough to purchase it.

Is it just because I am in my late 50s that I believe that any concept of customer service within the retail environment has gone or has the drive to reduce costs meant that service can do one as long as they can sell you something.

Is this the onset of grumpy old man syndrome or is society well and truly fooked?

The customers have driven out the good customer service people over here IMO A40Bosh and whats left are people totally indifferent to you or my needs when we step inside.
My wife manages a bakery departement in a big grocery chain and the customers are taking the stupid phrase " customers are always right " to a new low.
They will buy a $50 cake call up complain it was sh*t and demand a full refund after devouring the whole fcuking thing and being ignorant on the phone and the stupid Co gives them a full refund with zero evidence a complete fiasco . Time after time this happens sometimes aggresivly to her face.
I treat everybody who waits/helps me the same with manners because they have a tough job at low wages there is no need to make it harder for them .
As a general point late evening shopping brings more younger staff into play and they are there just to get out of the house and b.s with their peers not help you or me

Well some time ago, i asked the checkout lady, could I have a plastic bag.

The bags were nearer her than me.

She said "You've got arms."

I reached right over near to her seat to get them.

Totally stunned.

Was chatting to friend recently. Problem being people in general are pushed to their limits in jobs these days. You are just a number and treated as such. Most jobs the element of fun has been removed. You only have to look at the way the country is run today to see that people dont count.

So, although with this lady saying such a thing, to be honest, it doesn't shock me as much as it once did.

It’s actually been labelled as ‘TRS’ = Taylor Richards Syndrome.

It’s not always immediately obvious to others when it comes to a diagnosis but when they finally realise you have it, then it becomes a problem that you simply can’t get rid of.

Those possessed by devils, try and keep them under control a bit, can't you ?

You're getting old; this has been happening since day one.

Or did you not see Harry Enfield's crass LoadsAMoney character back in the 90s?

Or Wayne and Waynetta?

A friend of mine is doing a part time cashier role at Waitrose and for alcohol, they now all ask for ID, if you look 25 or under.

My friend actually asked for ID of a man to buy alcohol, to someone who was actually 45 !!!

He is so paranoid, he will get it wrong, he practically asks everyone.

He asked someone who turned out to be one of his work colleagues who was young by way of comparison being only mid thirties !!!

I did get ID'd in The States when I was 27 but the age was 21 there then.

When I was a student down in Portsmouth, got the busses with a few others and got asked if I was wishing for a child's fare, ie assuming i was 14, I was 20, but never ever failed to stop my mates from raising this hilarious matter, when conversation ran dry !!! That was my non existent street cred, gone forever more.

Had an Additional Needs student with me in a shop in Galway a couple of years ago
The student made a purchase and paid. No verbal interaction from the shop assistant. The teacher in me couldn't let this go and I said to the assistant. 'Could you not say thanks' to which he replied ' it's on the receipt '

In defence of supermarket staff, of which I am one after a stopgap job whilst looking for another in the legal profession somehow turned into 14 years, I would say that quite a few do give a f@ck about customer service. I'm on the till and have a conversation with everyone as I'm throwing (joke) their shopping through and you can do that and be efficient at no cost to anyone. Especially during lockdown it seemed that you might be one of the only interactions a lot of older people had.

It's got less of a pleasant job as time as gone on as there is a huge problem with shoplifting, even here in sunny Penzance. I've been trying to stop men who have got as far as the front of the shop with their stash of alcohol/meat, or anything else you care to mention, and shouting in the headphones or ringing bells to say that I've got a shoplifter only for them to get away after an aggressive tussle (I'm not winning that one as a 60 year old woman) as I shout some complimentary term out the door at their receding back. We had a very elderly lady recently who has been coming in for years who it turned out has been nicking every time she's been in - she went sort of quietly after she was confronted with her crime although she still tried to say we'd overcharged her last time (she'd pay for 3 items whilst stealing a dozen more).

Having said, that at the moment we have a couple of younger members of staff who, I think, are rude to customers and one has a face like a smacked-arse and I see that sort of thing you mention in their (lack of) customer service so I suspect it's like any other job and you get what you might term suited or less suited staff for that particular role.

Yes. I've seen far worse customers than staff. Like the woman in Marks that was trying to get an exchange for her clearly worn and washed pants. She denied it and was v rude to the assistant. The manager disappointingly backed down and gave her a refund!

In my younger days when I was about 20 I went to apply for a passport. Was asked if I needed a kids passport or an adult one. Then annoyed at how the day had gone I decided to treat myself in HMV to a video and was asked if I had ID showing I was 15!

Both the "video" and HMV references aging me a little there I feel...

A girl i work with used to work in the offices at Amazon and she said a customer returned a book because they “didn’t like the ending” and it was refunded.

Companies are part of the problem then complain and have to block people who are chronic returners. How about not indulging them in the first place.
