They should be starting to think they need to up their game Gilmour did well, but East faded

Another midfielder that lacks height. We won’t be winning a thing in the air in midfield (again) might be a decent player I really don’t know, but what we were crying out for was an Ollie Banks type player, obviously Jim would sooner sign 4 players in the same position than the one type of player we really need. I honestly can’t remember the last 6 foot plus midfielder we signed. Kitching? Are we going to have Mani dropping deep or Rodney playing a 10 role? The signings mostly so far look promising but reminds me of when Terry Dolan used to collect defenders, Jim clearly sees midfield as vital but we totally lack anyone who will win headers!!!

To be fair to East, he was playing well during that that good run we were on before he missed the Oldham game. Burger stepped in at Boundary Park and did well, East should not have come straight back in after that. Then after being out for the whole of April, returning in the last day defeat at Braintree shouldn’t have seen him start against Southend. Poor choices by McNulty. He’s never looked as good in a midfield two though and the formation doesn’t bring the best out of him, but we’ve done the ‘change the midfield shape to play a three’ to death. Whether we employ it now we have more options, time will tell. With his ability to get goals playing in a more forward role though, he would attract interest. He’d the one of the two I’d be looking to sell if the interest is there. I’m pleased we’ve addressed the need to have more options in central midfield but McNulty has a big job keeping everyone happy. Can see us being the ones loaning players out rather than the other way round next season.

Apart from Matty Lund, how many central midfielders have we had who were 6ft+ and dominant in the air? Ironically, the only other I can think of off hand is Jason Taylor!

Yeah he was playing RWB I think during Oldham’s playoff run. Scored twice too.

Good shout but he was never dominant in the air. The only one mentioned has been Vincenti, but he was a wide midfielder. We don’t need someone who wins aerial battles in central midfield, just someone who wins battles.

Joe Pritchard Signs on 06:14 - Jul 11 with 2565 views | Dale_4_Life | Great signing 100% see this as wingback cover possibly sharing the advanced role with TAR…. Allowing Toby to press on and run for a solid 60 then fresh quality legs would be another improvement to the side made. Versatility plus quality… this is one to be excited about out for sure. Keeper next PLEASE plus another Centre half and another man who is obsessed by scoring goals.
Joe Pritchard Signs on 12:34 - Jul 11 with 2033 views | samueloneils | We now have 10 midfielders in a squad of 22. None of the 10 score more than a few goals on past record. No mention of any pace on the flanks. How is Jim going to use all these players and keep the dropouts motivated? This time last year we had 5. These new players are all on payroll. Yet the budget is not being spent on the attack or keepers. The only new signings who played a full season last year were Dieseruvwe and Tutonda. Strange.

We’ve signed Dieseruvwe and extended Henderson’s contract by another year, while Rodney is already under contract; there may well be scope for further attacking additions before the EFL and Premier League windows close, if we want to go down the loan route. We will have a goalkeeper (or we won’t be able to play any games), or maybe two, so it’s not correct to say the budget isn’t being spent on them. It would be more accurate to say “part of the budget available for a goalkeeper hasn’t yet been spent.”

It depends what you really classify as a midfielder. McBride and Barlow are technically midfielders even though they play in the attacking-midfield/10 position. Out of everyone we’ve signed this summer, arguably only Petit will be challenging East and Gilmour for those two central midfield roles, and he’s a defensive-midfielder, something we’ve been lacking for years. Mancini will be competing with Barlow in the AM role. Pritchard by all accounts played at RWB for Oldham and can also play as RW. Humbles can potentially play CM but will likely be competing for the AM spot too. So if we’re being picky that only leaves Gilmour, East, Petit and Edwards for those two central midfield positions. And Burger, though going off Jim’s comments I can see him being loaned out.

I expect Dieseruvwe to play a similar role to Jay Bird last season, for Rodney/Hendo/Barlow/Mancini to play off. In his recent interview, Jim said he wanted another striker. I'm guessing/hoping this is a player who can offer cover for Dieseruvwe, because we've no real alternative to him if he can't play a game.
