Keeper, initial one-year deal after trial.

Haven't seen him play, but not the experienced head we seemingly needed to push Whatmuff for the no.1 shirt...

I am sure he did 30+ minutes in the second half of the Grimsby friendly and did well enough. Of course he lacks senior experience - but as a back up keeper, somebody that has come through the Man Utd system, he will be fine.

Agreed as a back up keeper, but I thought we needed to sign a 1st choice who could be pushed by Whatmuff, so we didn't have a 17yo keeper to start the season.

I suppose this could still happen but it seems unlikely now.

Count me as another who would have preferred some experience amongst the keeping ranks, but let’s not overlook many would have been happy if Moulden had returned after his release by Palace.

Let’s not pretend that we haven’t also done well with inexperienced keepers in our history too. Add to that we have had the experience of Lynch, Coleman and O’Donnell in recent years - would they be what we need now? It could go either way.

A bit like “that” goal at Southend which has to an extent define our style for several years, the signing of Bob Sanchez has set us on a path where we can’t resist signing young inexperienced goalkeepers. I understand there have been exceptions, but we do seemed to get sucked into loaning players who are sent here to learn from their mistakes before in the cases of Sanchez and Bazunu going on to better things. I hope this season one of these lads matures quickly and makes their mistakes early in the season, so they can settle into the role and become a positive signing.

A 17 year old goalkeeper with no experience in mens football is the opposite of what McNulty suggested we needed a couple of months ago. He cited the loan keepers as being one of the problems last season. Anyway, its his team, lets hope it works out. I dont understand the mindset of bringing in quality experienced out field players at this level and then signing a couple of young inexperienced kids for the goalkeeping position. It makes no sense to me when hes been harping on about the lack of quality in the squad aa being a problem during last season. Blooding youngsters for other clubs shouldnt be a priority. There is also the possibility that we might see a experienced keeper come in over the next few weeks but there's obviously been no plan to do this for the start of the season.

I'm sure this wasn't Jim's first choice, hopefully he's still working on bringing someone else in.

Can’t help but feel a bit underwhelmed on this one. Presumed Whatmuff was going to be our number 2 and regardless of age, think the gk position now sticks out as the weakest area of our squad. Think it’s obvious we’ve missed out on a few targets but would rather us have been a bit more patient (even if it had meant starting the season with just Whatmuff). Agree with what 442 said about Coleman, O’Donnell etc on not needing an experienced keeper but on paper would say these 2 keepers have less experience on their CVs than any keeper we’ve signed under McNulty. To put it bluntly I think it was probably the area which needed improving most based on last season, and is the only area in the squad where I don’t think we’ve improved!

At least the squad is now seemingly complete.

I wish the lad well.
Just don’t want a unsatisfactory situation to arise similar to that of three years ago with Lynch and Coleman vying to be first choice and no one seeming to be sure who was starting from one week to the next.

If he’s said about bringing in an experienced keeper (where was this btw?) then surely there was a plan to bring one in for the start of the season?

Quality and experience are not mutually exclusive either. Keith Welch was one of our greatest ever keepers and he was 17.

Would I have wanted someone who could fit into our system who has more first team football experience? Yes. But at the same time I don’t know what keepers are available who fit this criteria.

Louie Moulden conceded 39 league goals in his 28 appearances behind EEL, Nevett, John and Keohane including 6 clean sheets. He has played very little first team football since leaving us ( to higher levels).

I dont think our experience of rookie keepers is that good.

i hope Jim knows what he is doing.

Yeah, but most were disappointed when he left and would there have been many complaints had he returned?

From what I’ve seen of Whatmuff so far, he’s impressed and has a confidence. Of course he’s only 17, so that’s the worry and why he may have benefitted from a more experienced no.2/possible no.1.

That all said, Josh Lillis is at the club and we have to trust his opinion on such a specialist position too.

I didnt bookmark where he said it but he definitely cited the loan goalkeeper situation as being one of the things that affected us last year and indicated we needed our own goalkeeper. It was shortly after the Southend defeat i think and might have been during a interview on Radio Bolton. I don't think i imagined it. According to Jim the main reason for us pulling up short last season was inexperience in the squad, we can debate these two goalkeepers until the cows come home but what cant be denied is their inexperience at this level. Something that McNulty cited as the problem last season. Hopefully he will have a experienced keeper lined up to fall in line with the rest of his summer recruitment.

Which would indicate there was a plan to bring in someone permanent, possibly with more experience. Maybe something has happened to affect that, leading to a permanent signing of someone younger.

If anyone going to the forum tonight would like to ask, it may shed further light on the situation.

Someone younger? Two goalkeepers with no experience at this level. As you say, somebody might ask the question tonight.

Yes, they brought in a permanent keeper who was younger than maybe an original target. At least we have a keeper of our own now, last season we existed with loan keepers all season long. And there was only one really available as Brad Kelly was obviously not going to be used outside the NL Cup.

Sam Waller hadn’t played at this level last season and he did alright. Again, I haven’t a clue what other keepers were available, but outside of wanting more experience we are all guessing at what might work.

Yes i understand that but it's the hypocrisy of it. The manager has just conducted a in depth interview and cited inexperience as being our downfall last season and something he's addressing over the Summer. The goalkeeping position is maybe the most important position in the team and his two recruits are the most inexperienced players in the squad. To just accept that without flagging up the contradiction wouldnt be right. It's the same sort of approach to the goalkeeping position which cost us in the big games last season. I'm assuming he is waiting on another goalkeeper to sign, thats the only logical conclusion i think.

Anyone with little experience needs o gain experience from somewhere.

With good coaching and guidance there is a chance we could have a little gem on our hands. If it goes wrong we could have a Liz Truss style little gem.

Lettuce pray it isn't the latter

I’m not sure that City would have allowed Whatmuff to come on loan without some sort of assurance that he would be playing regularly. And by that I don’t mean NL cup matches and the odd bounce game.

Whilst agreeing that the first thought would be that City loaned Whatmuff to us to be No 1 keeper, but perhaps there could be a situation that they might feel that exposing the young man into a world of "Big Boys " football even if only in training sessions may benefit him rather than perhaps beginning to stagnate in youth football.
Like many a little surprised that we have now got 2 very young keepers ,would have thought it would have been one or other but not both.
Have considered putting myself forward having had years of experience as a keeper. On my recent CV are "players player of the year" Coaches Player of the Year and a best player in a tournament trophy.
Downside---it was walking football and being 77 years old perhaps will give it a miss!!!

The question was asked.

Jim was not happy with having 5 different keepers last season and the issues it caused. He alluded to younger keepers who supporters have warmed to in the past and that Whatmuff is very highly rated. He mentioned budgets, balancing the spending across different areas of the squad and how the club has tended to operate resourcing goal keepers the past few seasons. Jim did say he had spoken to experienced keepers, but reading between the lines that Whatmuff is better than what was available in our budget and that money that could have been spent on a more experienced back up has been spent elsewhere.

It is a risk, but one I understand. Would you rather spend more on a back up keeper who hopefully will never play or use the money for depth elsewhere? If things do go wrong there is always a loan keeper available.

Thanks for the info. Again, having info behind decision making helps fans to understand it better, even if we might not all agree. Removing speculation in the way the club have with a forum and Fitzo has with his article has to be a positive.
