For years people (myself included) have been saying the bubble will burst and clubs will go bust and on the whole it didn’t happen. Could this now be the start of the domino effect?

Clubs of Morecambe's size have been going bust for a long time. The drop from League Two to National League is particularly lethal. Before Morecambe it was Macclesfield, before them it was Rushden, Hereford, Chester, Halifax, Scarborough, Darlington, Boston... I've probably missed some. Other, better-run teams step up to replace them.

We used to have collections In days gone by for ailing sport clubs and various other things.

Morecambe are just another club going belly up, just another club In Lancashire but It could be anywhere.

It's been said a million times but the riches and wealth at the so called top end of football In this Country and the financial state of clubs like Morecambe will just carry on and get bigger/wider.

Have Morecambe been mismanaged? I suppose so but there should be more to It than that, there's a silly old bloke from Morecambe who's spent his silly old life going through the turnstiles at his home town club for God knows how long but after next Monday them days will be over, His Saturday afternoons and the occasional Wednesday evenings are about to change.

From what I can gather Man City were being Investigated for the last 12 Months for over spending or some such misdemeanour I wonder what happened about that.

Does anybody care anymore?

I do.

My Father had a profound influence on me, he was a lunatic.

The Morecambe story is a particularly odd one. They have a willing buyer who has passed the EFL test (for whatever that is worth, though apparently worth more than it used to be). The current bloke just refuses to give it up for no obvious reason and has a long record of dissolving companies including a Worcester rugby team.

First three matches already cancelled as the insurance hasn’t been paid. Derek Adams (manager) is helping players financially where he can and the senior players they have left will be on very modest wages. Feels like it’s the end which is always sad but feels a bit more so in a part of the country with not much else going on.

Well, we've lost about six clubs so it has happened, but also post covid attendance for smaller clubs has gone up so it's sort of saved it.

As long as clubs operate at the mad wages to income ratio they currently do then no one is safe, including us by the way.

Doesn't seem that odd. Some people are just cnts.

All stadiums should automatically become ACVs by law IMO.

Rushden, Boston, Macclesfield, Scarborough, and now potentially Morcambe were all promoted from the NL. So clubs going pop in the EFL are not necessarily being replaced by better run teams from NL.

It may not be popular, but is there a case to scrap promotion/relegation between L2 and NL? Bar AFC Wimbledon, none of the teams coming up seem to be able to compete (forget Wrexham, they're no longer a football club).
It might also provide some financial stability for L2 teams with the removal of relegation.

Thoughts?

What about Salford, Barrow, Fleetwood and most impressively, Luton?

What's the point in going to football if the prospect of promotion isn't on the cards?

Also, it's letting the worst of people off the hook.

Pity the Morecambe fans, and community, but the notion that all stadia ought to become assets of community value wouldn't (in the long run) add much of a safety-net, I wish it did.
We only need to look at the run-down state of the LC Stadium to get an idea of how that could go.

Football clubs as ACVs, might have more of a chance though.

I’m sure the self-serving fckd up premier league would make the same argument about promotion from the championship given the promoted teams have been relegated again.

There's a whole host of clubs queuing up in the National League who'd all do very well in League Two if they had the chance and the number of relegation/promotion spots between the two wasn't so tight (two). There's also a whole host of clubs bobbing around the bottom of League Two who'd struggle in the National League but keep getting away with it.

The gap between the two leagues is pretty tiny, very rarely does a club go from NL -> L2 and struggle. Sutton Utd the only one of recent times who have, and to be fair they are an absolutely tiny club anyway.

So, no, zero case whatsoever to close off the Football League, although EFL clubs would probably be in favour of such a proposal.

There's a far stronger case to shut off the Premier League to the EFL going by financial/standard of play logic, and we all know how such a proposal would go down!

The little clubs that no one cares for are allowed to go, there's a bit of noise from rest of the league but it's soon tomorrow's chip paper.

I'd be amazed if Sheffield Wednesday are allowed to go though, I'm sure there will be allowances made that other clubs in L2 wouldn't get.
But maybe a big club does need to go, it will be the start of some serious reform.

Promotion/relegation has been around for less than 40 years and in that time only Yeovil has made it to the Championship, and look at them now.

There maybe very well run NL teams, but when they get to EFL then realities hit. Look at Harrogate.
The only teams that really compete are former EFL clubs with a decent size fan base such as Notts County, Wimbledon, Luton & Wrexham on Roids.

They should either turn the NL into EFL 3 to increase TV money a reduce the impact of relegation or regionalise EFL 2 to reduce costs.
Something has to happen, but doubt it will. The death of Morcambe and struggles of Wednesday are not even top stories on BBC football. Top story today? Son leaving Spurs and a w×nk fest over Arsenals tour of Singapore. FFS.

I haven't checked for a while, but Gateshead and Dartford both had higher gates than teams like Accrington who seemed to hang around in L2 for years.

No doubt there is interest in Sheffield Wednesday though the issue is being able to buy it to make it justifiable.

the likes of Burton, Stevenage, Crawley are all doing fine? Burton even made it to the Championship too. Salford knocking about at the top end of League 2 again, Fleetwood stabilised in the EFL? Barrow don't seem to be in any danger either.

I'm not sure it is true at all to say that reality hits.

Here's my favourite little factoid for the "reality hits" side of the argument:

Here's every team in last season's League Two ranked by average home attendance.
Bradford City (17762)
Notts County (10626)
*AFC Wimbledon (9745)
Chesterfield (8505)
Doncaster Rovers (8057)
Port Vale (7622)

Carlisle United (7425)
Swindon Town (7229)
Milton Keynes Dons (7025)
Walsall (6470)
Tranmere Rovers (6389)
Gillingham (6268)

Grimsby Town (6067)
Crewe Alexandra (5397)
Colchester United (4998)
Newport County (4239)
*Cheltenham Town (4198)
*Morecambe (3410)

*Barrow (3381)
*Bromley (3111)
*Fleetwood Town (2995)
*Harrogate Town (2968)
*Salford City (2849)
*Accrington Stanley (2556)

And here's the same for League One.
Birmingham City (26326)
Bolton Wanderers (21325)
Huddersfield Town (18817)
Charlton Athletic (18112)
Wrexham (12781)
Reading (12535)

Barnsley (12211)
Wigan Athletic (9946)
Stockport County (9630)
Blackpool (9619)
Rotherham United (9330)
Peterborough United (9151)

Lincoln City (9004)
Bristol Rovers (7880)
Leyton Orient (7875)
Mansfield Town (7769)
Northampton Town (6629)
Cambridge United (6597)

Exeter City (6513)
Shrewsbury Town (6207)
*Wycombe Wanderers (5413)
*Crawley Town (4393)
*Stevenage (4005)
*Burton Albion (3254)

The asterisks are the NEW teams in the EFL post-1986 - the ones who came up from the Conference/National League who hadn't previously dropped into it.

This is the kind of correlation that statisticians dream about - EVERY team who came up since 1986 ranks below EVERY team who was voted in pre-1986, in both divisions. With the exception of AFC Wimbledon for obvious reasons.
