If this has been done before, apologies.
What are your favourites, say why if you want. Not mandatory.
Me? Old enough to have seen Sir Reg and his beyond powerful strikes.
The schadenfreude as TK slotted that penalty away to the buckets hysteria (with best celebration ever) will never be forgotten, or laughed at.
But favourite goal ever? We've seen some magnificent ones, but the occasion, the skill, the GOAT, 2nd v Leeds Utd. Share yours please. If video is possible, even better.

Have seen many great Dale goals over the years, but the ones that mean the most to me personally are the ones that secured a promotion, play off spot, win in a derby match, save us from relegation, secure a match against big opponents in the cup etc, even if a penalty like Muirheads against Darlington.
That Paddy goal at the Shay was magical he was magical. The most entertaining player we have ever had .

Certainly a entertainer but so were Eugene Martinez, Bobby Hoy, Andy Milner and one player who i think would sprinkle stardust over the current team, Cian Hayes. All wide players who could get you off your feet. I think the best of the lot though was Mendez Laing, unstoppable when he was fit and in the mood.

An odd one really but has stuck in my mind was Donnelly's goal v Burton. We had never got a point off them and they had taken the lead. We could not break them down. Donnelly smacked a shot and, I can't just remember whether it hit one of their defenders or he just miss hit it, but it flew into the air, over the keeper's head , who managed to claw it out of the goal. We weren't 100% sure whether it had crossed the line but the ref thought about it and gave the goal and we drew.
As I say not a particularly good goal but it broke our duck against the Brewers. And probably added another grand on the fee we received for him when he got sold 😀

The worm of time turns not for the cuckoo of circumstance.

I'll add a couple of late winners to the list. Eui Martinez at York and Alan Reeves at Cardiff. Both late enough that there was no time for the opposition to come back at us!

Dave Cross headed goal v Coventry in our FACup giantkilling game in 1971…immortalised on the front cover of the programme in 1972.

But the Henderson goal v Leeds mentioned above in another giantkilling act is a close second.

Third place ….Reg Jenkins screamer from a free kick outside the area at Bolton in the league cup in 1969. A bit of a fraud to say I saw it…nobody did…particularly Boltons goalie ( England international Eddie Hopkinson I think)

The Big Reg free kick in that League Cup game at Bolton. It went in the far top corner like an arrow from out on the left wing. Roberto Carlos eat your heart out.

All those mentioned previously were memorable.
Talking of free kicks, remember that one from Lee McEvilly in the cuptie at Preston?
Another late goal which sent the away end mad was one by Alfie from the edge of the box around 2008 to win a game at Bradford City.
One of my favourite Big Reg goals was a bit out character…..
It came against Colchester at home early in March 1969.
It had been 0-0 at halftime and the crowd were starting to get restless until a long ball over the top left Reg on his own with only the keeper (who was on the edge of his box) to beat. The ball bounced and stood up nicely for Reg to delicately lob him. Almost Hendoesque!
Marty Lund did something similar from long range against Rotherham in the last home game before Covid lockdown.

Not a scorer of great goals but if we’re talking about entertainers- Norman Whitehead. When he was in the mood he looked absolutely top class. There was talk of Man City paying big bucks for him yet somehow his career petered out.
A bit like what happened with George Morton, the Dale turned down a big offer for him midway through the season only to release him at the end of the season

I remember Whitehead scoring with a header in a 4-1 win at Bradford PA. Nearly fell down the terracing in amazement! Great winger.

That’d be a collectors item. Didn’t he score that penalty against Aston Villa ?

Speaking of George, seem to remember a goal with an overhead shot against Brentford? in a game we lost 5-3--our only home loss in the season ?
Perhaps I think I remember because George is very much one of my favourite Dale players in all the years of going
Another to remember for me was the Stan Hepton goal at Ewood Park that ensured we got to the League Cup Final

Yes he did…One of the few times we got out of our own half. Villa playing in third division. Dale lost 7 of last 8 before that game. Villa top of the division having won 7 of their last 8 including a 6-0 thumping of latics at boundary park.

George would have been great in today’s football. A goal scoring midfield player. They had big expectations of him at Everton but he never quite made their first team

I just about recall going bonkers in the Sandy when Jimmy Graham flew down the left and took us 1-0 up against Leicester in the League Cup sometime in the early/mid 90’s…. Sadly lost 1-6 if I remember, but that goal and the feeling could a giant killing be on.

Another player from back in the day who in my opinion deserves a mention, not necessarily for any individual goal but for his "heart on his sleeve" enthusiastic displays and sheer enjoyment of playing for his home town club is Steve Melledew
His display against Everton in a pre season friendly(1969?) also got him a move there as a result

One my favourite players in my early teens.
Scored in about five consecutive matches in the early stages of 1968/69. Think they were all 1-1 draws as well.
Started in works team Whipp and Bourne and I think his dad Leslie had a tobacconists somewhere on Spotland Rd.

Scored the all-important opener of course, in our promotion win against Southend

I'd add Will Buckley to that list. On his day he could dribble past the opposition with ease. Remember that Bradford home game where he almost got their whole team yellow carded the amount of times they had to foul him to stop him. And he went onto have a great career with Watford, Brighton, and playing in the Premier League with Sunderland.

Its a BRILLIANT goal to cap a BRILLIANT start by Rochdale - Don Goodman 26/08/10
Poll: Are fans more annoyed losing or not playing Henderson centre forward?

Two from the 1964/65 season..
Reg Jenkins 35 yard free kick away at Chester
George Morton giving Dale a 2-1 lead against Brighton.

Brighton’s Norman Gall and Bert Lister having a wrestling match match that ended up with them falling over the barrier wall into the crowd in the same game.

Correct. Do you remember the furore over the penalty in the first half. The Dale were attacking the Church Inn end, I was in the Sandy. There was an almighty scuffle in the goalmouth and the ball ended up in the back of the Brighton net. The ref gives a goal but the Brighton players say it went in through a hole in the roof of the net. They point out the hole and insist the ref go and consult his linesman. So he goes over, they have a chat, then the ref comes back and ————— gives the Dale a penalty for handball ! Cue loads more arguing from Brighton. Jimmy Thompson calmly waits for it to all die down, and then slots the penalty away.
Their star player that night, a young lad called Barry Rees, who had just joined them from Everton for big money died in a car crash a few weeks later.

Some of this is mentioned in https://www.theargus.co.uk/news/6784845.vintage-vinners-albion-championship-joy- :

'With the arrival of Rees this particular side had bags of strength and that counted for much where the physical element was so important. Rees shirked nothing, but the same could be said of that half-back line and they were all put to the test in the fiery furnace of Rochdale.

Norman Gall was sent off after a dust-up with Bert Lister and a hail of missiles descended on the Albion team when the oldest spectator complained that Gall had smacked him on the nose. What actually happened was that Gall aimed a retaliatory punch at Lister close to the touchline, missed, and hit the innocent and elderly party.

A marksman mistook Brian Powney for a bullseye and hit him with a dart while team mates were struck by coins and washers and Rees ducked to avoid a china cup. Amid all the mayhem Barry maintained a cool and dignified presence.'

What struck me about Rees was he was keeping Big Reg relatively quiet before Gall got sent off. After that Brighton went all out for goals they left Rees at the back marking Big Reg and Don McKenzie, the Dale left winger, at the same time ! He actually managed them quite well. He looked to be a player with a big future to me. It was a tragedy he died at such young age.

This might sound like an odd one but one of my favourites is from one of my first ever games and was Peter Costello's last minute equaliser against Northampton in 1991. We were losing 1-0 for most of the second half but absolutely dominated the game throwing everything at the opposition. Peter scored with a header in at least the 5th minute of injury time throwing himself amongst the boots at the Pearl St end and I seem to remember getting pretty badly injured in doing so. The game itself probably meant nothing, but I went beserk in celebration and it got me hooked on supporting Dale due to the pure commitment giving everything for the team.
