Looks such a weak squad.

Being honest, I only really see 9 proper first team players

I’ve always been supportive of CN as I thought he was bringing something new to the club that was needed. I can see the logic of developing young players as a means of improving our bank balance down the line but playing Preston et al isn’t down the line it’s now and I’m nervous about ‘the project’. I’m coming over all Alan Hansen regarding kids. Not in this league.

But some numbers ( eg 14,15,18) not taken yet. Plus why does Varanne have 40? Maybe I’ve missed something?

Saving that 14 for Saito again?

No Tuck is a surprise.

Indeed, given he was part of the first team preseason training and games.

Alex Aoraha, Kieran Petrie and Lorent Talla don't get first team squad numbers either. Seems they will be just DS padding this season. And I thought they each had the potential to progress.

In Tuck's case, I would imagine a loan out this season is likely

This. If we're pinning all our hopes on developing young players so successfully that they can slip in the first team without a hitch then we're in serious trouble.

Well, that's our competitive advantage fcked. They didn't even blur the names, or even announce them as anagrams.

The fact that Taylor Richards and Jake Clarke-Salter are fictional should fool a few though

That card you get in Top Trumps... Okay so Taylor Richards has played 2 minutes of football and tied his shoe laces up. What have you got?

Never knowingly right.

Interesting (or not as the case may be) that no number 18 - generally taken by strikers when the number 9 is taken (1+8 =9 and its also double 9) may be a clue in there.

Also seems Celar is staying. Otherwise why give him the 9 to ship him out 2 weeks later.

Saito wore 14 last year. Not allocated.

Of course, this is all hypothetical and straw clutching of the highest order.

Lyndon Dykes was our number 9 at the start of last season.

He ended up playing 6 minutes!

Just saying.

There's just not a credible Champ midfield for me there, and quite possibly not a forward line either.

Don't seen anything other than a half-cooked loss this weekend, sorry.

Again.

As much as that is true, Dykes was given the number 9 shirt from the moment he signed in 2020 and therefore had that number for 4 seasons before being sold last year.

Celar was given the number 18 last year (my point about strikers and the affiliation with that number when 9 is already taken) and has been given the number 9 “fresh” this year. If he was on the verge of leaving wouldn’t you just stick with his as 18 and leave the 9 free for a “replacement”

As I said, all straw clutching and hypothetical. Probably means nothing and they are all “just numbers”

All true.

But what if we left the number 9 free and then failed to get in another striker?

We would then be playing (at least until January) without a number 9. Which would then become a stick to beat Nourry with.

So giving Celar the number 9 might be erring on the side of caution.

And they might have left the squad numbers announcement as late as possible because they were hoping to have the Ba deal completed.

I have been reading for over a week that the Ba deal was imminent. What sort of visa issues take that long to sort out!?

I wouldn't worry about numbers and I think some are getting their boxers in a twist about them. However, when you look at the individuals who will actually wear those numbers, then it looks a little concerning.

The average of the squad must be around 12 and in a league that's as competitive as the Championship, we look light on heft and experience.
